Which milkweeds are best for monarchs? Which do they like best?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

they love both of those. They are what I have

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

Really, do you have any others?

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

Do you get a lot of butterflies coming to them? Which do you think is best?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We don't have many bfs here at all this year.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

no just those. Monarchs use them when they come in

Haven't seen a Monarch since spring. Should be coming soon. Gulf Frits have only been here a few weeks and didn't waste anytime laying

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

you don't see butterfly weed (asclepias tuberosa)?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I have never been able to keep A. Tuberosa alive

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

Why what happens?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

it dies for no reason

I have a rather large run of Asclepias syriaca, or Common Milkweed.

This is a volunteer patch that is just about to bloom with a bit of Loosestrife trying to invade the foreground.

I have an upcoming monarch article in which I list the milkweed that monarchwatch.org sends out as a part of their waystation kit.

Do NOT plant any of the Genus "Cynanchum" (Swamp Worts), which are toxic to monarch cats.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Honeyvine or Cynanchum laeve has been documented as being a safe host plant for the Monarch cats.

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

COOL!!!

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

What OTHER milkweeds are there?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

There are apparently 100 or so milkweeds, but only about 1/4 of that are host plants for monarchs.

at least that's what I read.

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

Really, I thought all of them were host plants.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

this quote was from the US Gov. Site:
http://www.fs.fed.us/monarchbutterfly/habitat/index.shtml

Here is their list for both easter and western populations.
http://www.fs.fed.us/monarchbutterfly/habitat/milkweed_list.shtml

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

It said that 1/4 are important. That doesn't mean the rest are not.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

ah, good point.

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

Thank-you.........(Mrs_Ed pleas reply to me D-mail)

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

I want all the types of Milkweeds:
Asclepias Tuberosa
Asclepias Asperula
...........................................................
And all the others listed on PlantFiles except Asclepias Curassavica(I have that one).
Please help me. I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Danny, Here's a older thread about milkweeds that you might find interesting: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/850131/

And I made more notes about milkweeds in my diary that you might be able to use~~just scroll down to the bottom of this page:

http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/tabasco/4451/

Specialty Perennials carries a lot of different milkweed seeds, and of course there are many other places to buy them (like Monarch Watch) or you can trade for them here on Dave's, too.

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

Cool. :-)

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

What other milkweed tips or information do you all have? Thank-you all for helping(helping more would be appreciated).

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

tabasco, what else do you have or know?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Danny, Well, I collect a lot of info and put it in my diary, but I don't 'know' much!

What has already been written in this thread and the links here and in my diary should be sufficient to get a good milkweed collection going. Those sources cover everything on milkweeds and be sure to check the links~~Monarch Watch, Specialty Perennials, NABA, and those sorts of websites.

Why do you need so many milkweeds? Are you going to sell seeds on E-bay? There are lots of 'seed collectors' out there who might be interested. And novice butterfly gardeners, too.

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

No I just want to have at least 1 of every Milkweed Variety so I get monarchs and so my acre backyard can have sented, bug flower clusters.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Well, many of us would like to have many varieties of milkweed. What makes that hard is that milkweeds in general are some of the most difficult plants to grow. So people tend to grow those that are easier to grow. Or sometimes, kinds that are already native to their local area.

Los Fresnos, TX(Zone 10a)

I know, but all the milkweed that is native where I live is Asclepias Curassavica. I already have a 2 foot Swamp Milkweed. Milkweeds are not hard to grow because they are weeds. Only few have a taproot. I am Growing Asclepias Texana, Incarnata, and Zizotes Milkweed.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

So Danny what are you wanting more varieties for? Same question that tabasco posed...are you going to sell seeds or plants online? What is the rush to get all you can quickly? I see you just joined us...slow down.

Sounds like you will be providing a nice Nectar and Host corridor down there in texas.

Interesting info (though 4 years old) on Milkweed in Texas, if have not already read it:

Well the monarch migration is almost underway and they will pass through my house in October and I wanted them to be in Monarch heaven with alot of different milkweed varieties. I just love Milkweeds and Milkvines!
