I have a post where I used to have a rose growing. The rose died, so I want to try a gloriosa lily there. The post is about 6-7 feet tall. I've read that they like something very small to attach to, so I figure I'll just put some course hard ware cloth or something there and tie it to the post. But I am concerned about the pm sun scorching the lily and bleaching it out. Is that a problem? Thanks for your answers.
Gloriosa lily in full Tx sun?
I know this is an OLD thread, but I was browsing before I asked the question, and don't want to make a duplicate post. Can anyone comment on this?
Hmmm. Well, I never got an answer. I planted another rose in that spot, so now I don't have a spot for a gloriosa lily. Sorry.
Hi Silverfluter,
I actually tried (in vain) to reply to this thread last August and my computer froze up during the post and I guess it never appeared. When I tried to find your thread several days later, I couldn't locate it. Sorry about that. Seems pointless to reply now, but I will say what I would have said before.
My gloriosa lilies have done great in full blazing East Texas sun, with little attention. I had mine in a bed in the unshaded area of the yard.
They did not fry in the sun or change colors due to the sun's affect. However, there is natural variation of coloring among the blooms. some were more purply maroon red, while others were more orangy flame red.
Miniponyfarmer, thanks for your answer and it may not be pointless. I don't have a spot right now for a gloriosa lily, but that could change. I am planning on digging a large new bed this year that will be mostly for veges, but I don't think they would mind sharing some of their space with a gorgeous lily.:) How much rain do you get, and did you have to water anyway?
I typically don't water much, if ever. They did GREAT without anything special. I put them in a bed with a gardenia that likes it dry. And so they were dry all year with the gardenia. I do use a thick layer of mulch, though, and amend the beds with compost also. These gloriosa lilies are really tough plants.
Well that's very good news that you didn't have to water. How much rain do you get? We normally get about 23 " a year. This year I think we've had half that, maybe less.
I don't know our actual rainfall, but I'd say it is in the 20 to 30" range, just guessing.
Wow, I can't imagine having that much rain! I grew up in southwest Houston where it did rain a lot, but I was not a gardener then. I don't deal well with humidity though, so I guess maybe I'm in the right place after all.:)
