Fingers are crossed, tho don't think you need it! Those are gorgeous babies! I am not showing but will be 'looking' at the fair again this year....

I would be far too nervous to show--but everytime I see you birds, silkiechick, I suffer from chicken envy. I know you will do very, very well. The are stunning!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

thank you both for the compliments, it really means alot. today is load up day so another long day ahead, can't get noone to wake up early, lol. i guess the wedding for our friends yesterday wore them all out. i still have to get transport cages ready and such. i can't wait for them to go up and be unloaded so i don't have so much to worry about and they r ready. gives them a little time to settle in before judgeing day.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

chicken envy is putting it lightly Cat...
I bet those other exibitors mouths drop when the see silkies babies strut in the hall!

Stops all that cackling in the pens tooo.. I can hear the chicken cluUUUHHHH? lol

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i'm so glad u all love my silkies, lol. them and my showgirls r my prides and joy, i love them to pieces and they r outstanding mom's to boot. i must say i'm a very proud momma they r really great pets , full of love and fun.

we have 46 birds in this show, took us 2 trips to get them there, rotfl but we made it. all did good only 1 freaked on us trying to round them up and had to be left home too skidish and one of my good showgirl hens but the ones in r settleing in good.

we have in showgirls, silkies, bantam cochins, bantam frizzled cochins, sizzles, d'uccles, giant cochin and bantam salmon favorolles. i made a mistake the judge will be here on wed for judgeing birds cuz he is on vacation not tues like normal. i put in also 2 daylilies, 3 roses, a hanging basket spider plant, i think that's it those will be judged tomarrow at 9 am. i got hired to work the poultry barn all week so i get to feed, water and take care of about 600 birds everyday which is really neat as long as the heat is not to bad. the kid's r excited they get to collect eggs to try to hatch so they r helping too. the petting zoo hadn't opened yet and had bunnies out so i bought the kid's a blonde holland lop girl so they have a quad of breeders now. we named her ginger, i'll get a pic tomarrow of her. they had a harliquin too i might snag tomarrow she is gorgous!!

i'll keep u all posted how we do with everything. by the way would love to see pics of what breeds u all raise too!!
night,

Okay--to my shame, I am going to post pictures of my Nankins. They are much cuter than the pictures and this is only their day tractor--I am using them to help clear the bermuda from the raised bed--they sleep in a much more secure coop. So don't report me for bantam abuse!

Here they are compared to my Buff Orpington, Buttercup.

oooh! I NEED some Banties! they are just too cute!

Lodi, United States

There are showier bantams than Nankins--but these are so sweet and gentle. And they were fairly easy to incubate and raise. They are little, but plucky.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

hmmm, dont I have to pass thru Lodi to get to sonora? tee hee!
maybe next time I go up to the cabin.... lolol!

Lodi, United States

I think I have 3 Nankins pullets and 2 roos--but not sure yet. The Chicken Fairy contract requires that I disseminate fertile eggs whenever I get them--so everyone who may want Nankin hatching eggs next year raise their hands.

It is gruelling being in thrall to the CF. She never lets up in her avian plan for world domination and she rides her minions hard.

All hail, Gallus gallus domesticus!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

Silkie Chick, I have 4 silkies that we got in April. I am curious what are the criteria that a silkie should have to be " show quality"? I have a white, gray, and two partride. One of the partride is getting its combs. Not on top of head but under beak. The are red. All the others have blue. Is that an indicator of poor breeding? My daughter wants to show our silkies at next years fair. Thanks! : )

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

thank you!

crested,
i can't wait till NY, i hope we get to meet each other while we r there! i heard about the other NY show do u know where i can find more details for it?

jan,
look up american silkie bantam club on yahoo search they have a website and they have all the silkie standards written there for each color. the blue should be earlobs, the ones under beaks r called waddles so u have a nonbearded and they should be mulberry colored not red. combs on top of beak should be small mulberry walnut comb(mulberry should look like a black to dark purple). my girls above r bearded instead of waddles under neath they have feathers that look like beards. silkies for show get judged by the standard of perfection for aba/apa.

i can't find a pic of my nonbearded roos, i don't have many that have waddles but here is a pic of axel for example he is one of my young bearded roos to show u how the color and comb should be. only thing i don't like about him is his middle toe feathering he could loose points for it or it could count as a DQ(disqualification) for him. if there is a silkie with same quality in show against him and the other has better foot feathering then they would take a higher winning he'd get docked for foot feathers if that makes sence. he does have exhibition bloodline but he is what i call breeder quality. they r judged by comb, waddles, crests, color, feathering, type all sorts of things.

he is gorgous and has alot to offer my breeding program with him mated to my hattrick girls or other exhibition girls he should make some real nice babies with way better foot feathering who could be show potential babies.

i raise- buff, white, blue, splash and and partridge.

my kid's show in open shows. they r not in 4-h so they r restricted a little more with quality anything that doesn't look show quality they don't have to let into show if it is an open show. they r usually pretty strict with that anything that looks pet or hatchery quality is denied at time of entering ect. my sugestion is if u can get her into 4-h do so if she is old enough because it will be a great learning experience and really help her out and she will learn the ropes from them rather than the hard way as mine have. here they have to be 8 or 9 i think it is for 4-h. we had a lack of communication w/ our 4-h so they never got to sign up so we just put them in open show with us.

here is a pic of one of my bearded buff pullets-honey, she is waiting patiently for tomarrow, lol. this is her first show and i'm excited to see how she does as well as all the others.

7 of us showed we brought home anywhere from 1st through 4th place and did really good. i'm not for sure how many of who got what cuz alot of tags the chooks ate, rotfl. some r missing from people pulling them off. so saturday night when we get all our ribbons and premiums i'll let u know the full results. i do know we placed for every class we entered though and should be for premiums about $150-$200 at my guess from what i could tell depite the tags all messed up on so many.

i found my other rechargables so i'll take as many pics tomarrow as i can to share with ya all.
