Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 8

LOL! Tooo cute! :-)

Eden, Ontario, Canada

I love watching the hummers chasing each other around our yardhere. It doesn't seem to matter how many feeders I have hanging, they still chase each other. I had a very thriiling experience with a hummer last year that I would like to share with everone. I had one of those feeders that you put on the window witha suction cup, and just for fun I used to stand by the window to see if would still come to it. I didn't seem to bother them, so I decided to open the window and hold my finger by the feeder and, was TOTALLY amazed when one landed on my finger to have a drink! She came and sat on my finger all summer. I.m just sorry that she never stayed long enough for someone to get a photo. My digital has a delay on it and usually that was when she would take off and was no longer on my finger in the picture.

grdnkupkake...Can you hold your shutterbutton halfway down to get rid of the delay?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

grdnkupkake - Very cool story. Now that would be a real thrill to have one perch on my finger or drink nectar from my hand. We don't get a lot here at one time like y'all do up north. It's always been one at a time. I am hoping more find my yard and start flocking here! LOL! I wanna take some photos and videos like some of you do with several birds at your feeders! That would be sooo cool! :-)

The male hummers must be starting to move south. The numbers at the feeders here in the deep south seem to be increasing. This is just the beginning of our heaviest feeding time.

f_chisolm... I've never tried holding the shutterbutton down halfway, but I certainly will the next time I take a picture. Thanx for the sugestion

beckygardener....It was as exciting as meeting the likes of Tim Magraw or Reba if not more LOL. I told my husband I was never going to wash that finger again, and he told me to make sure I wore gloves when I did any cookin. he didn't want any surprises in hif food. LOL. I certainly hope that you get more birds down south where you are. They can keep you entertained for hours. In the 4 years since we moved here, we've gone from 1 or 2 to at least 10 or more. I have 5 feeders hanging and have to fill them at least every couple of days. It's really funny when the feeders get empty and they think I'm slow at refilling them. The hummers come right up to the window and seem to give me " the look " that says " Hey lady, what's taking you so long? We're hungry! " . As soon as I go outside they fly over to the maple tree and I"ve no sooner got one filled and they start comming back to feed. They seem to know that your not out there to harm them.

Cool story grdnkupkake...what a thrill to have one land on your finger, I'm sure I would faint!

Frank, I think most of our regular males have left the building! There are still some here but most of the guarding is being done by the juvies.

I moved two of the feeders where they would get more shade and set up my fake tree next to it. They are loving the tree and have had several perching on it at one time. Here is a shot from a little while ago. Not the most attractive set up but the Hummers don't mind and neither do I!! I couldn't get them all in one shot but I counted 16 or 17 in this one pic.

I am going to see if I can get one to land on my finger tomorrow!! In the meantime I will share some feeder pics I took today. The Hummers were busy all day long!

Rose, wear Red!!!

I wonder if you'll have to remove all that extra perching material you put up.

Melbourne, FL

Rose, I think you have the most birds of anyone here. I think I would faint if I saw more than two hummers at a time!

Now I know where my hummers are this summer!!! GM

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Whew...I am as surprised as anyone to see and hear all these little birds. They are back this morning in great numbers again. I sat on the patio with a red hat on and a red flower in hand..they got within inches of me but no one would land. I may try later when DH is home and take a pic if it happens!

Here is another feeder pic...it doesn't show all the Hummers flying around fighting.

A gallon a day?!!! I can see what you are doing in your spare time ... mixing sugar water! :-) I am thrilled to see one hummer. I would probably faint if I saw as many as you are getting! It looks like Grand Central Station at your feeders! That is soooo cool! :-) Lucky you!
