Hopefully someone can help me ID this one. I have the names written down, somewhere of what I planted. The writing came off the markers I had in the pot on this one.

Here's picture of a leaf. They are dark green, light green, with a few white markings. The plant is only a few inches tall, at this point, and is tending toward being bushy and spreading rather than sending up runners to climb. Maybe it just needs time to start climbing.

HI Deb -

Your MG looks to me very much like my 'Plum Delight'. I just looked at my notes and see that I did send you some of these seeds.

'Plum Delight' is a MG that I got from a local friend. Her original seeds came from Japan with no name. When I first grew these, they did have a mounding habit - then, just took off climbing like crazy. So, it is my guess that it was apparently crossed with a trailing-type MG.

I will be curious to see more of your blooms and to find out if it will also be a climber.

If this is 'Plum Delight', stand back - it is a very heavy bloomer and is very pretty. Also, some blooms will have different patterns.

Here are a couple of photos from my blooms from last year.

Hi Emma,

I checked my list and that is one of the seeds I planted. Thanks for the ID help. The leaves on yours look a little more rounded than mine. I've only had one bloom so far, but it has buds on it, and I will post more pictures when they bloom. My MGs are really just starting to bloom in the last week or so, and it is just one flower at a time right now. I am anxious for the time when they will be loaded with flowers!

Hi Deb -
Oh Kewl!
Problem solved.

I can't remember what the leaves looked like on the 'Plum Delight' when they first started blooming without going through my DVD's, so it will also be interesting to see how your mature leaves are.

I will look forward to seeing your beauties.

momcat-Deb,

Is the bloom that you posted above on a tall climbing (?) or a relatively short / dwarf plant(?)...

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Short, only a few inches high, no signs of any climbing whatsoever. I have several MGs that were started at the same time that are huge, covering 4 foot trellises, and I have some that are tending to trail, rather than climb that are 5' to 6' long. All of my seeds were started in jiffy pellets at the same time, in the same little domed tray. Once they had germinated they were all moved to pots, planted with the same potting soil. This is the only one that is so small. I can take a picture of the entire plant tomorrow, if that would help.

Thanks for the additional info Deb...

I'm thinking that you may have a Violet Sunsmile there...

Thank Ron. From those pictures the leaves look identical to mine. I've never knowingly had any Sunsmile seeds, but everything I planted was from trades, so mas possibly mislabeled.
Here is a picture of the plants. I have two growing in the same pot.

Deb

Edited to say, that though it's not too visible in my picture, there is a definite darker purple star on the flowers (if that matters)

Momcat, did you start any seeds of Velvet Plum from me? I wonder if some busy bee could have crossed it with Good Morning Violet growing down hill from it last summer...?

(Many thank you's to Emma for the seed of Velvet Plum and to PamSue for Good Morning Violet)

Deb - There is a chance that the seeds that you received were the result of some cross, but the bloom you posted here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/momcat_1217107735_287.jpg
looks like a Violet Sunsmile to me and the dwarf form of the plant in conjunction with the matching leaf shape strongly supports the likelihood of the Sunsmile ID...

Deb - There is definitely a similarity with Sunsmiles from your photos. They are mounding/creeping MGs and have those beautiful variegated leaves. Your are gorgeous!!

Deb -

I will be interested to know if this MG starts to climb. I still think this it is Plum Delight
especially since you did start seeds of Plum Delight and did not of the Sunsmile series

Your MG is doing the same thing that mine did last year.
When I first grew these, they did have a mounding habit - then, just took off climbing like crazy. So, it is my guess that it was apparently crossed with a trailing-type MG.

Otherwise, your MG may be reverting back to the trailing-type that I believe it was crossed with.

Here is what my Plum Delight looked last year 'before' they started to climb.

In this photo about 3-weeks later, Plum Delight is just starting to climb up the cage.

Mine still haven't shown any signs of climbing. I am still hoping they will though. I do love the flowers, whatever they are!

If they are sunsmile, I am glad they were mislabelled, because I do have some sunsmile seeds, but the name didn't sound particularly pretty or exotic, so I never thought to start any. They are those, one of these day's I will start some, but they didn't make the cut when I was deciding what to start this year. Though, neither did the White Hige I grew last year, but I had some volunteers come up, and I'm happy they did.

I have some seeds I got from Tommie, with the curled leaves, "Demono mutant strain" she called them, that have just decided to start climbing within the last week. No signs of flowers, but a huge mound of curled leaves, that are just now sending up tendrils.
