I tried to build one, unsuccessfully. The water kept leaking out around the flat stones and I tried foam and all but it never did work, so I kept it as a "dry" feature. By the way, my parents live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and they have had a cardinal pair for the last 2 years (never had one before that for 23 years!) Wouldn't surprise me if they are also making their way into NB. I hope they stop by your bird spa for you!
DAILY PICS VOL. 127
Rose and Burn, lovely images. Burn, did they name Grand Falls after your waterfall?
Oh dear, poor cardinals Nanny and Deb. They look a little the worse for wear. I hope that Nanny's doesn't have that problem with mites. I have read about that somewhere. Hopefully Deb's cardinal will look happier when it dries up a little.
Our road is flooded out again today, nearly as bad as the flood in May. We had about 6 inches of rain the night before last. The herons will think that those corn fields are a new lake because they've been flooded for about 2 months now, and just had this new influx of water. Makes me happy to be on a hill.
Claire
They both look like adults (red bill in Deb's; juveniles have a black bill), with a bad dose of feather mites. It doesn't matter a lot as at this time of year the temperature is hot enough that they don't need feathers to keep warm; they will also be moulting and growing a new set fairly soon.

Burn I am also envious of your water feature! It inspired me to buy one of those preformed waterfalls hoping to lure the birds to them...so far no luck, they just use the bird baths!
Love the cardinal pics...our yard would not be the same without them and I love to walk the tree lines and listen to them singing in the tree tops!
This is the first time I have seen a female Red-winged Blackbird at the feeder!
Thanks, Resin. Female, then. Very small to be an adult, but regardless- she looked miserable at that moment!
Nanny: Love that fuzzy little finch.
Pelle asked if I would start a new thread when this one got to about where it is, so I'll be doing that shortly......
