HEEEEEY DAVE.........pop-ups are all over daves.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i have been offline for a few weeks and now that i am back every time i come to daves i get a pop-up. has something changed?

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I never get a pop up here?? Strange but I don't feel deprived!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I only saw an intense pop-up issue when I went from subscriber to member. If you let your subscript lapse you'll really appreciate just the few ads you may see mama.

North Augusta, ON

I've never ever seen any pop-ups...

Can you take a screenshot and post it here?

(Zone 1)

The only time I see pop-up's is if I don't log in.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

No pop-ups showing up for me.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

dave, i don't even know what a screenshot is. lol.

(Zone 1)

Mamajack: I wonder if he means to copy and paste here, the page with the pop up ad?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oh, i might know how to do that. i will try to do it next time. funny thing though dave is that since i've complained about the pop-ups i have gotten on twice since then and there have been no pop-ups. d'ju you fix it? 'at's my story dave. hahahahahaha

No, I didn't fix it. If you see popups you should report them immediately as I don't want them on this site at all.

You shouldn't see them, whether you are signed in or not. They don't belong here, period.

Next time you see it, click on your PrtScrn button and then open mspaint. Then do a Ctrl-V to paste the screenshot, and save it to your harddrive. You can then post the picture here in this thread for me to see it.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

dave, who DO you think you're talkin' to here? i know you think everyone is as smart as you are on this computer but i didn't understand a word of that. but i know you're serious so i will get either e.v. or linda to figure it out so you can see. and i didn't see any this time either. pop-ups i mean. maybe it's my computer as it has something wrong with it that i annoyingly tolerate rather than do without it if i take it in. you wanna fix my computer dave? you ought to. lol. and by the way IS it possible for a messed up computer to cause that? might as well learn while we work. lol.

North Augusta, ON

Some viruses can cause pop-ups and other annoying things...I learned that the hard way...

mamajack, I understand completely. :) I went ahead and disabled ads on your membership, so you won't see them anymore at all.

It is possible that you have a virus, as threegardeners said. I'm the last person who can help with that, though, as I know pretty much nothing about Windows. I'm a Linux-only kind of person.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Since Dave turned off your ads for you I don't see how you could be getting any popups from here--there have been a couple cases where one of the DG advertisers had a popup, but you couldn't see those unless you had the ads turned on. So I suspect you've got some adware hanging out on your computer. Ad Aware and Spybot are two names I remember of spyware removal programs for PC's, I'm pretty sure at least one of them has a free version you can download so you might try that and see if it helps.

here's another one.

ecrane, how do you find the spyware removal programs? i wish i was smart enough to converse about this. also, i need to know something about this. my nephew downloaded a software program called WINDOWS LIVE ONE CARE that includes antivirus protection , a firewall and other protective measures. if i get one of these free spyware removals will it mess that up?

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Mamajack - You might post your question on the
Computer forum. Lots of helpful experts there —not that
we don't have some on this thread ;-).
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/computer/all/

There's no way that the registrydefender.com popup would
have any connection to DG.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

You might call your nephew and ask him about it--maybe the software he downloaded for you already has a spyware removal program in it that you could run, then you wouldn't have to download anything. If you do need to download one, the easiest way to find them is to google the names of them and you'll find their websites. I'm not familiar with your particular antivirus program, but I had Norton antivirus on my old PC and had no problems using the anti-spyware program with it, they do different things so they shouldn't interfere with each other. And June had a great suggestion about the computer forum--here you'll get some advice from people who know a little about computers, but that's where you'll find the experts, they can walk you through exactly what you need to do.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Here's Spybot, it is free and found spyware that Adaware didn't on mine.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

Click on the top right link 1.6.0 and it will take you to a page where there's a link to download.

Don't forget to look for updates about once a month as they update regularly, there will be a link on the search page when you have the programme, it puts an icon on Windows homepage to access. Also 'immunise' your registry, do that once in a while too as new files added to you pics etc will not be immunised.

No problems usually with compatibilty, they work with all the big guys but some who sell their spyware can sometimes be awkward as they often let some 'approved' trackers through which Spybot won't.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

thanks to all of you. i went ahead and started a thread on the computer chat forum. and wallaby i asked them if it was o.k. for me to download spybot. again thanks to all of you. barb

I caught it!!

My computer is virus free and I have ads off, only forum sponsors is turned on. This popped up in my face just now:

Thumbnail by threegardeners

That screenshot helps more than anything else does - thank you!

Terry sent it to Ted up at HQ and he's going to look into this.

This is something that is difficult for us to control. We use a 3rd party server for serving the ads and sponsorships, and they can insert popups through that system. But, we don't have the option to disable that ad server as all our legitimate ads are circulated through it.

I am frustrated by these popups and it's a perennial issue that I'm continuing to work to get to the bottom of. Nobody here or at HQ wants these popups and we're all working together to figure out how to get this ad server to stop sending them.

Whatever the solution is, we won't stop until we find a permanent solution.

Does anyone get the spinning CD disk that's a survey you are being asked to take? It has a small tab on the outside of the disk that says "close". I do that fast. I haven't seen it today, but for the last week, I have.

I think that one's probably from the same company that sponsored the popup that threegardeners posted above. I may be remembering wrong, but I think all the popups that have been originating from DG advertisers have been that same company always wanting people to take surveys.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well i think if they want our attention then they need to go through dave so he can see how it would benefit daves garden folks. lol. because if there is no benefit to me i don't have time for random strangers right now. lol. i feel so good that maybe it isn't just my computer too. just like a proud parent. now i don't have to take my computer in. and that's also thanks to hart and wallaby. hats off again to you two. lol.

and dave, thank you for taking me seriously. you are just so coooool.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

I spend a great deal of time on DavesGarden and have never seen a popup like these. I wonder why?

North Augusta, ON

That is the first one I've seen in 3+ years of being here...and I spend a LOT of time here...LOL

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

Using Firefox and its adblockers keeps most of them off my screen.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think the only people who are seeing them have either ads or forum sponsors turned on, that's where the popups are coming from so if you have those turned off then you won't get the popups either.

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

I don't get pop ups at all on DG - at home or work

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

If you have the ads and forum sponsors turned off you won't see them, the only people that are getting them have one or both of those turned on.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

folks, my computer just died. i am borrowing a computer right now. looks like there was a lot wrong with my computer. lol. talk to all of you soon.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Did you dowload Spybot and run it to check for problems? If not, too late now, sorry to hear that.
