Crocosmia Emily McKenzie growing in part shade. This is orange unlike the Lucifer which is a true red. This one only gets about 2' tall. Lucifer is over 3'.
July Blooms......Part 2
flowerjen- you should start an all blue thread and see how many we can give your son!
stormyla- the you-know-whats have not quite eaten everything, have they? Pretty!
Sally, They keep doing their best!!!!
It is raining very nicely here. All the plants are happy!!!! I may have to go pick tomatoes in the rain.
Awww....Qwilter, I am really jealous. We are needing some rain fall too. Sure would make my plants happier too.
I gathered Hollyhock seed yesterday and remember that you wanted some. I have a light pink double, a darker pink single, maroon double and white double. I can send some of each if you'd like or you tell me which color to send. We went ahead and cut down the whole plants yesterday because they were all leaning way, way over. The only one that remained upright is the white one, so I left it alone.
The tomatoes sounds yummy. Can't wait to eat a tomato sandwich this year with a homegrown tomato. Yum, yum.
Ruby
Whew! I just finished going through both July threads-- it takes a while for them to load on dial-up so I needed an evening when I had plenty of time to kill.
Everyone's gardens and flowers are looking so gorgeous! I keep writing down plant names that I must have and the list keeps getting longer and longer and longer and... If only my eyes weren't so much bigger than my wallet! :-)
Here's my winged beauty vine in bloom (I wanted to crop the picture a bit, but my editing software is not working)

Ladygardener,
Your "Mystery Lily" might belong to the group of these. I am taking a guess, as I saw one in latvia that looked similar. It had the pink/maroon color on the outside of the bloom. the throat was yellow. And--it was the most fragrant Lily i have ever seen. The fragrance was released as evening set in--even on out DR table.
Here's the one I had over there. The stems are SO stiff--like wire.
Of course--I posted it on DG and someone ID'd it in no time flat. it is also in the PF and seems to have many versions of this Lily.
Here's the description Holly or hart came up with and the site where you can buy the bulbs. I ordered their cataloge.
Gita
Chinese Trumpet Lilies
The introduction of the Regale Lily from China in the early 20th century gave rise to these popular Chinese Trumpet Lilies, also known as Aurelian Hybrid Lilies. They should be planted in a less windy area and staked due to their tremendous height and huge flowers. They are a perfect cut flower (so add some to your cutting garden) and are terrific at the back of perennial beds. Harvested in mid-October, we ship Chinese Trumpet Lilies in mid to late October, just as soon as they arrive in our warehouse from the harvest. Top size bulbs: usually 18/20 cm. Height: 4' to 6'. Bloom time: July/August. Plant 6" deep and 12" apart. Horticultural zones 4-8.

'ROYAL or REGAL LILY'. Large fragrant trumpet shaped 6" white flowers with canary-yellow throat, and flushed lilac to purple outside. One to 7 per plant, in July to August. To 2 - 6 feet tall. W. China. Germinates in 2 - 11 weeks without pretreatment. "Have had them bloom in 18 months from seed started in late December." Bertrand. "Deliciously fragrant... One of the most beautiful of all known lilies, the exquisite blending of tints and colors forming a charming contrast with the rich, deep green foliage. Highly recommended... hardy, strong growing and permanent as far North as Boston."
Gita, I do think the lily is Pink Perfection as it is also offered by White Flower Farm, I ordered a 3 pack of African Queen, so far only 1 is African Queen the 3rd will not bloom this year, it set buds early and they dried up and dropped off. Next year will be interesting when it blooms. Do I have 3 different lilies or 2 AQs or 2 PPs ?
Here is a night shot of my water garden. I had to use the flash, if I didn't all you could see if dots of lights.
kubileya- LOL, you don't need a big wallet when you have DG buddies and USPS!
Gita, that's a good size for those lily bulbs. The one you posted the photo of with a little pink on the outside is the regular regale lily. Album is white inside and out. Pink Perfection is of course pink and Golden Splendor is yellow. I haven't grown it but judging by photos I've seen, it's a yellower yellow than African Queen. They're all gorgeous.
I got some regales in the Ednie coop this spring. Unfortunately, most of the five bulbs I got were rotten and only one grew and bloomed. Neal arranged for replacements but they were planted too late to bloom this year. Hopefully next year I'll have a nice show. By happenstance, one of the pink tiger lilies I got last year from bloomingbulb turned out to be album. I couldn't say which of the two I like better. They're both so pretty.
I'm seriously lusting after African Queen. And some more orienpets. And some formosa lilies. I thought I had posted some lily photos but I guess I didn't. Here's the orienpet Invasion. The flowers were huge and there were a lot of them, something I didn't expect the first year.
Guess I'll get lilies one of these years! My friend has been promising me Casa Blancas but she never gets a round tuit.
Kubileya- You have some interesting plants there. I don't remember seeing either the winged beauty vine or the Pagoda starfish I going to have to look them up.
Sally, I picked up most of my Lilies since joining DG, before that all I had were the common Ditch Lily. That's pretty much a Thank You to DG friends. LOL
Hart,
I ordered the catalogue from one of the places you sent--ther one where 5 bulbs cost $9.95. Wanted to see what else they had.
Your Avocado Lily, with that big cluster of blooms, reminds me of many people in Latvia walking with a SINGLE tall Lily stem with many blooms on it and buds too, a bit of wispy greenery and wrapped in paper to give to someone. SO pretty! Seems everyone gives everyone else flowers there. The flower stands are out of this world! Especially near the big Cemetaries. There can be 6-8 stands--all in a row. I am sure I have pictures.....
Gita
See here....This is just on a street in Riga. To me--this was just beyond amazing!

Gita, That's one beautiful Photo. I'll bet you enjoyed perusing the wares. I can just smell the fragrances.
Kubileya, that Pagoda Starfish is really neat. Is it a tropical?
Hart, your lilies are beautiful. That first orienpet looks like American Journey. I love the American series. Do yours multiply?
Holly,
the winged beauty vine is Dalechampia discoraefolia. My picture doesn't do justice to it. Those purple bracts have the coolest metallic sheen to them.
The Starfish plant is marked as Stapelia variegata 'Pagoda' but I haven't been able to find any additional information on the cultivar. The flowers are small-- about 3/4"-- but they don't have the gross fragrance of most stapelias and they sure are cute.
Stormy-- yes the starfish is tropical. This is the first year I've had this one, but I've kept a Stapelia gigantea happy over the winter in a southern window before, so that's where this one will go.

Chantell, That Hawaiian Sunset bloom is pretty. I've never seen one before. Do you have a photo of the whole flower or vine? Is it annual?
I don't know if these lilies will increase. I hope so. I have read the regales will make nice clumps eventually. The orienpets are definitely more vigorous than oriental lilies.
The Avocado was a replacement for another, brighter colored lily that was out of stock. I would have picked a different color myself but it's prettier than I expected. Kind of a nice, soft gold.
Stormy, I've noticed a lot of the orienpets with different names look a lot alike.
Gita, that market is fantastic.
Sally, my only lily for years was Casa Blanca. It's a wonderful lily with huge flowers and amazing scent. I have it planted right outside my kitchen window where I can enjoy the fragrance inside and out. Mine has never increased at all and this year only sent up one spindly little stem with no blooms. I don't know if that means it needs to be divided or if it just needed a year off.
I NEED regales...have I mentioned that before? Gonna suck it up and order some in Oct w/bday $$$
I wish someone would do another lily coop. I've been checking NW Perennial and Bulb to see if they're getting in any fall bulbs for another swap mini coop but I'm not seeing any. Maybe I should write and ask.
IF there would be enough of us interested, I'd be happy to contact the folks that I was thinking about using in the fall.
Who is that, Chantell?
Chantell & Hart, I would definitely be interested in a Lily Coop.

I'm happy to contact them - if a manageable group of us were interested.
They're really, really, REALLY expensive. And I don't see that their bulbs are any bigger than anyone else's.
Diane - "you have mail" LOL
I'm finally getting around to taking some pictures. I have a bed of phlox paniculata 'Katherine' blooming. I originally had an unnamed variety in this bed, but I had major problems with powdery mildew. I had seen an article somewhere about 'Katherine's resistance, and replaced all the phlox in this bed with it a few years ago. It has performed well, and I haven't had any mildew problems. Only strange thing is last year I started getting a darker lilac bloom on some of the plants, and have no idea where they came from. I don't think they are late left-overs from the original plantings because they don't get the mildew. Maybe 'Katherine' doesn't come true from seed, and these are the result of volunteer self seedlings? Anyway, I actually like the two colors better together than the whole being the same color :)
