I originally had an unnamed variety in this bed, but I had major problems with powdery mildew. I had seen an article somewhere about 'Katherine's resistance, and replaced all the phlox in this bed with it a few years ago. It has performed well, and I haven't had any mildew problems. Only strange thing is last year I started getting a darker lilac bloom on some of the plants, and have no idea where they came from. I don't think they are late left-overs from the original plantings because they don't get the mildew. Maybe 'Katherine' doesn't come true from seed, and these are the result of volunteer self seedlings? Anyway, I actually like the two colors better together than the whole being the same color :) |
