Good morning all! Guess what's blooming for me? !!!
Part Deux: Breathe deep & tell us what smells wonderful...
Ahh playin' catch up here...look at all the goodies ya'll have been discussing...I'm drooling!!!
Roberta - is that your night blooming jasmine?? If so...guess what??? I came home to buds on mine!!! Yipeeee!! Now if they'd just bloom for me before I head down to visit my grandmother....ahhhhhh
Note to self - NEED Rangoon Creeper - heard others discussing that before...now I know I need it...LOL
Lucky youse guys, lol. Looks like I may have lost my cestrum, sniff sniff, going to try and root some still green shoots :( Might have overwatered-see they like sandy soil, mine was heavy but lived 2 years, even bloomed earlier this year.
I NEED RC too, but what will we do with all winter? Can it sit in an unheated greenhouse? Doesn't it get BIG before flowering? Will cutting it back hurt?
yeeey Chantell! If you have buds on yours it will surely bloom very very soon! I was so excited when I saw my cestrum buds, and the blooms came only a few days later!
I need RC too! I heard it's super fragrant and I added it to my wish list recently....
Vi, on the cestrum, it's a little hard, out of several cuttings I tried only one rooted, and it was the one in potting soil (vs water). Good luck! If you're not sucessful I can always save some seeds for you if you like...
Vi - I'm happy to send cuttings when I get back if you'd like...just remind me. I'm lookin' at this monster plant and thinking to myself...mmm-hmmm where's THIS one going in a few weeks when the night temps turn cooler. The dang thing is as tall as I am...not that, that's tall...but still gotta find room between the brugs and plumies in living rm I guess....oh what fun this will be!!
hahah! It's a "good" problem to have!
Agree...I can think of much worse challenges to have...LOL ^_^
Does anyone have any Cestrum diurnum they'd be willing to share if I was successful at rooting some of my Cestrum nocturnum? I * really need some day fragrance and my NBJ has bloomed all summer for me. It came from Glen and has trippled in size this year alone, but needs shaping. I'll get a pic and see what y'all think. :)
Also, would you plant gingers now or keep them in containers until spring? I recently got 2 new ones and put them in 5 gal containers. I was thinking about wintering them and planting them in the spring. Any thoughts on this?
One more question ... any tips on a Chinese perfume plant? Mines new, pretty but how long do I have to wait for a perfume?
Susan,
I swear that's the one I rec'd this summer....but I don't see it in my journal. It's not that big but I'd be happy to share a cutting if no one can hook you up with a plant. Just send me a reminder dmail for next weekend....
Don't need anything in return....
Hugs,
Chantell
Hmmm wouldn't know...my Butterfly Gingers STILL have not bloomed for me...year 3 with them...ugh!!! But happy for you Roberta...LOL ^_^
Susan - you're so cute!!! Believe me - I'm good!! I've been so blessed recently from fellow DGers with such INCREDIBLE plants I can hardly stand it...nor will the teens when I start carting them all inside to the living room...LOL It's almost THAT time of year...oh, the look of joy on their faces...NOT
haha OK! I think I'll ask my friends at the tropical forum, and I'll post here for you! Chantell....dear, are you fertilizing you gingers? MIne only did after I loaded them with ferts!
I know - are those emails torture or what??? Then you get great DG friends (I'm guilty) that will let others know just in case they didn't get the email...LOL
Fertilizer???? Hmmmm....I sprinkled Osomite (sp?) around the dirt - does that count?
Do you mean Osmocote? That's a good one but I think what did it for my gingers was the organic stuff, I think it was bone meal (?). The one with a high middle number.
Also, I've been treating the soil with worm poo! Seriously! There's a local store that gives away worm castings tea once a week and it does WONDERS. Everyone should look for some, I highly recommend!
I've been leary of bone meal because of my dog. I didn't know if it would entice her to dig? I do use Osmocote. I've heard a lot about worm castings. I went to the GA RU, and they had an interesting speaker talking about it. Actually made you want to buy your own worms. LOL I had a dream that we got overrun with those buggers. :) Do you know how fast they can multiply? grin I highly recommend purchasing the castings and not the worms! ^_^
Totally. I am one easily grossed out by bugs, especially slimy ones, lol!
I have a dog too. I just make sure to cover the bone meal with soil so that he doesn't get attracted there. I did see him sniffing the box!
Sorry IO1 to not get back to you in a timely manner, I really don't know if the radermachera would live in 8B, but I think it may do ok in a pot and bring it in for the winter. Mine does wonderfully in a pot. It's a little workhorse right now, it just pushed out it's 3rd flush of blooms. I wish it would bloom in other places than just the top, maybe I need to trim the top off to make it start shooting some side branches. As you can see it's all still new to me. Maybe someone else could say if it will survive in a colder area.
Here's the 3rd flush so far.....I wonder how many more times it will flush.
One plant I have blooming like crazy right now has a fragrance that I've never really noticed before. It's the Miracle Berry Synsepalum dulcificum, my little plant is in full bloom and it smells like yummy hand lotion....the blooms are so small it's hard to see them, and the scent isn't wafting but it was a pleasant surprise.
You can see the blooms and a couple of new berries in the photo.
I love my back garden corner right now, the fragrance is a myriad of perfume from the Pakalana Vine, Musky melon from the Rangoon Creeper and a Citrus undertone from the Lemon Verbena plant I have poking around. It's peak is in the afternoon around dusk, with the humidity drawing out all the different scents and mingling them together. YUM!
It's hard to get a picture of all of it together, but here's the Pakalana Vine in full swing....it really emits a strong perfume that is wafting too. Only downside is that ants are always on the blooms, although they seem to be just sniffing, I haven't seen any aphids or problems arising from them. I had to take the picture from beneath so you can see how many blooms there are....they hide very well under the leaves.
Wow Astgirl, that sounds amazing! I got a cutting of the Pakalana vine from a trade but it isn't doing so well...
My night blooming jasmine decided it wanted to put up a show! It's blooming all over! I bought it last fall and have been waiting for this moment since then! It's incredible!
Robcorreia, my pakalana vine took a while to get going, I had a very small rooted cutting to start with, but it has taken at least 1 1/2 years to get to this, also this is the first year it bloomed.....but well worth the wait.
My Night Blooming Jasmine is blooming away also, it is a nice plant isn't it!
I lost a night blooming jasmine in the house fire a few year ago that I had had for about 10 years. If I have anything you might be interested or would possible accept postage, please let me know NY address is :

HI Sheri, I'm about to cut my Night Blooming Jasmine back after this set of flowers finishes (within a few days) I'd be happy to send you some cuttings if you don't get any offers for rooted cuttings or plants.
I've never taken cuttings before so if anyone could let me know how much or where to cut for cuttings and then the best way to send them, I would really appreciate it. I'd love to share this plant.
Samantha
Gosh Chrissy.....love the wisteria, you must have a big smile waking up to that each morning. I remember back when I lived in Australia we had our whole fence with wisteria hanging over it around our pool.....it was a pain to clean but worth it for it's beauty and smell.
Birdieblue, that's really sad! Well, put a smile on your face now. I tried lots of cuttings of my night blooming jasmine this year and ONE took! So I can send you that little plant. I haven't forgotten about the Nicotianas you wanted either, I was just waiting to gather some more.
I'll Dmail you.
Chrissy, your wisteria is gorgeous!
Oh, Samantha, I fogot to reply to your question. Through my trials and errors I have found that semi-ripe or green stems are the best for cuttings. Take one about 6", remove the top and bottom leaves, and put in rooting medium (I just use potting soil). It takes a long time but it can be done!
Thanks Robcorreia for the directions. I think I'll try my hand at rooting some with when I trim my plant so that I can offer rooted cuttings in the future.
Hello all. I've been absent. I apologize. So hectic lately.......Well, I must take pictures but Solandra maxima finally bloomed. I want to try to describe it.....night blooming jasmine (but not so strong) mixed with something.....can't quite put my finger on it. Meanwhile while I sniffed and sniffed I got a very distinct funny aftertaste in my mouth. And it's still there. Of course it's cooler now, thankfully, but I almost wish this one had a heavy night air to travel- especially if smelling it on the breeze means no aftertaste. Many of my favorites need the humid air to preform their best. But, all in all- what a successful experiment. It is a woody well behaved vine that otherwise has a reputataion for devouring structures and fences. All I need is one flower to be happy and I got that and then some. Holding out hope for the rangoon creeper.
Meanwhile I've been very very naughty. Bought 2 fragrant orchids although I swore I never would get into orchids, much less fragrant ones.........somebody please punish me!
Oh no F4F, how could you do such a thing......2 fragrant orchids, soon you'll be putting orchids on your top 5 forums and then you'll be scouring DG Marketplace and ebay for new ones and before you know it you'll have an additional addiction to your collection! Ok so your punishment I think I speak for everyone here should be to post your blooms....that's only fair.....LOL. What type of orchid did you end up getting? I've got a few Cattleya's that are so amazing in fragrance when they bloom....it's hard to say no when I see one, except for the prices, they are always a pretty penny.
Can't wait to see your photos of Solandra maxima....it always looks beautiful in photos.
One of the orchids is a Cattleya- purple. The blooms got a little beat up on the way home (I also brought home a bunch of small rare palms- truck was crammed!) The other is in the vanda family- an Ascocenda. It is yellow and the fragrance I think is very slight, but it is pretty.
Astcgirl, you are such an enabler!
Happy Friday, all.
Fauna, she's right, now you have to post your pics!
