Part Deux: Breathe deep & tell us what smells wonderful...

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Podster, very nice. Is that a named crinum?

You guys! I am going crazy. My very first Tuberose will probably open tomorrow. My first named Brug has a bud. My Brunfelsia americana is blooming now and B. jamaicensis has buds. My stressed tea olive is not only alive, but has buds.............and I am leaving tomorrow for Boston. Not sure if leaving my plants or my boys is more stressful........DH was funny- he said, "When isn't something blooming at our house?" And I said, "Exactly." Well, at least I've never been to Boston and if I am lucky I'll see and smell all my plants again soon.

No idea or ID. It was an heirloom given to me. A 64YO womans' Dad had grown it when she was a pup. They called it a Milk 'n Wine lily but it isn't what we know as one. I suspect a Crinum but no name.

Sadly, I don't have much with fragrance at the moment but the butterfly ginger is budding. Nothing on the Osmanthus fragrance here... 8 (

Uploaded all my pics last night but ran out of time....will post tonight. Not only did my whining work on my Night Blooming Epi (she has a bud...finally after 3 years....) but guess what?!? I FINALLY found TWO buds on my Moon vine....am I excited or what?!?!? AND took pics of my single tuberose blooms before cutting to give to my mom. I grow them specifically for her so I was so excited one of them sent up a stalk w/buds in time to take to her!!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

That's awesome Chantell!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

May have to take whining lessons ~ LOL. Do you take cuttings even with the bloom stalk? Will it root o.k.?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL!!! Nah, it's not for rooting...mom kills anything green and/or alive. It's to put in a vase to enjoy the fragrance. Waiting for all the rest to send up stalks - nows about the time they've started for me in the past - the doubles should soon follow

Hello all. Back from Boston. Very sad here today. The tuberose must take a long time to open because it half the buds on the stalk were opened and just perfect when I got home. Unfortunately it became the center piece of an arrangement of several fragrant flowers that I made today for the funeral of a friend who suddenly and unexplicably died while I was away. She was forty, and had 3 daughters- 13, 5 and 2 years old. Her family were very touched that I had so many lovely flowers that I grew to bring to honor her, and she was as sentimental as I am so I know she appreciates that from wherever she is now. Sorry to share such a sad story, but I can't help but think about how the father spoke of the importance of the quality of the life we lead since death is an inevitable part of life- however much time we have- and I know all the wonderful folks on DG certainly appreciate that.

fauna4flora - {{{Hugs}}} I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. Such a young woman and with 2 children so little still. Though it is equally hard on a 13 year old when most teenager girls need their mom during those times in their life. How tragically sad. I hope the family finds comfort in many loving family and friends such as you!

fauna4, so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend and so young.

F4F---I hope that your simple gift of the lovely scent of that 1st Tuberose ( yes they do open over a long time ) will bring to mind and enhance their sharing of pleasant memories and sharing about the current loss and grief which is still so very raw. One of the most painful and saddest things that I observed during my nursing career was the "ignoring of the 'Elephant in the living room' syndrome"......that is when no one knows what to say and so no one says anything - Especially about the loved one who is no longer with us...many "good " reasons, don' want to upset anyone, etc...when really what people need most, is sometimes just to hear "I don't know what to say and probably don't have anything to say that will help, but just want to be here with you because I care".....
I encourage all to muster the courage to keep in contact with the grief stricken families all over and to let then feel "OK" about sharing ....all we really need to do is; 1- be there and 2-be listeners.
I will pray for this young mother and family and also that you will continue to be led to be a support for her.
God bless you and this family.

Have worked for the same Psychiatrist for 9 years now - absolutely positively agree w/Sheri!! F4F what a thoughtful gesture....I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend esp. at such a young age. I will certainly be saying prayers for you and the family. Hugs, my friend. Please take care of yourself with this hurricane coming as well.

Fauna, how sad. I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Your gesture of simple kindness was certainly appreciated by her family, and so beautiful that reading about it gave me goose bumps.

Hello all. Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses. The family loved what I brought, and their response meant a lot to me.....and they really appreciated everything- from the turn out of her co-workers to the network of mothers who stepped in and watched the girls when they needed someone. Better today....time, even a little bit, helps. I finally made a point to go to a place of worship today and took my son. I have been thinking about all the things we always say we will do and never do it (at least in good time.) Then, unbelievably, on the way homeI ran into the late Jennifer's husband and his daughter (my son's former classmate) at the grocery on the way home, which was nice to see them and give hugs again.

BB- I think what you have said is very true, and makes me feel even better that I decided to take my son along to the funeral. It was so sudden- I had changed my phone number, not gotten around to calling anyone, been out of town. I only happened to find out because I called our sitter to cancel yesterday. DH was working (rare for a Saturday) and I had to make a split decision and had an hour to get something to wear and get to the church. Well, now to return to the garden- my little bit of "heaven."

BTW, the church we attended had an arrangement of Murraya paniculata at the base of the podium, which did not go un-noticed by my son or myself.

Sounds like they have a lot of support which is so important and that you handled it absolutely perfectly!!!
Hope it's ok to post some more pics and doesn't come across insenstive...
Here's Hedychium 'Tai Pink Profusion' - which, by the way, will be available for the right trade once cut back...the tuber is huge on this one - planted 3 springs ago

Chantell, you know I'm "in line" for your pink ginger don't you!

I am so thrilled about my gardenia! Since we last discussed my gardenia disappointments, I moved both pots to full sun where they get a larger temp change at night. It worked wonders!

Rob - I am SO proud of you with your gardenias!!!

Ya'll are too funny re the ginger...I don't want to step on toes or be a pain but I'll need to trade for something that I've been looking for i.e. don't already have. The tuber is very large - it's sent up two stalks both last year and this year so I know it can be split for 2 trades.

Pretty Brug!!

Well, I gotta tell you ... my night blooming jasmine I purchased from Glen is blooming her little heart out again. Ooooh, I just looove that thing. sniff sniff

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Susan,, love that Jasmine.. and honeysuckle too.

Yeah Elaine ... I'd have honeysuckle, too, but learned that lesson a long time ago. Boy, was it ever invasive for me here. Couldn't keep it under control. :-(

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes, I like it to be across the road from me. I have been pulling it out of my azaleas today.

Is there such a thing as a fragrant, non-invasive honeysuckle? I'd really like to have honeysuckle but I have a tiny yard and can't have anything that would get out of control.

I'd love to have Jasmine but I'd have to move south for that....

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh you can have jasmine...just gotta bring in the non-hardys....wouldn't give up my Jasmine for the world! Speaking of which, my southern friends, what in creation am I doing wrong with the NBJ?!?!? Including its pot it is almost as tall as I am (5 foot-ish) - nice green leaves!! BUT NO bloom...not even any buds. This is my 3RD year purchasing little plants and I can't get blooms to save my soul. I will be bringing this gal in to over winter this year...hope she does ok nxt to the Plumies...but I'd really like to have some bloom....whaaaa!!!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

My experience has been that they're a bit slow to bloom if you start with small ones. At my old house I bought a small one, and it was in its third year in the ground before it bloomed for me. Then here I planted one and lost it to our big freeze, then planted another one the following spring which is now in its 2nd year in the ground and showing no sign of buds, so I think it's going to wait until year 3 as well (hopefully not longer than that!)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Good info...thank you!!! Seems that "three year" thing is applicable to many plants eh? Well then I guess I'll ask everyone to keep their fingers crossed for me that this over winters for me. I'd love to enjoy the scent you all rave about at some point.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Great pictures, you guys. My Clerodendrum minahasse put out it's first flower. Anyone have that plant? I thought it smelled like fruit loops. I will try to get some pictures tonight.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Fauna, get us some pictures!

Chantell, my NBJ hasn't bloomed yet for me either. I know it's passed "the mark" b/c when I bought it last year at the nursery it was covered in seed pods. And now....green healthy plant and no blooms!
I did have one at my old house. It was like at least 8ft tall and thrived on total neglect. Actually it didn't "thrive";, the leaves were ratty, but it bloomed every year! So I think age is a factor indeed!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I've had countless shrubs be blooming when I buy them from the nursery (or in bud, or looked like they had already bloomed) then I plant them in the ground and they don't bloom the following year, I think they take their time to get roots established, etc. Since your plant was big though hopefully it'll bloom at least a little bit for you next year and won't wait all the way to the third year.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I hope so!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

*sniffle, sniffle* Me too!!!!

Chantell ... I went back and looked at the date I purchased my NBJ ... it was 06/12/2007. I kept it in a 5 gal bucket until this year, though. I set it out in the yard and it's bloomed 3 or 4 times since then and has trippled in size! Just hang in there. You're not gonna believe the smell when that baby blooms, though!

My Bday was yesterday. I have some *very sweet friends. I've been gifted with a Jasminum sambac ‘Maid of Orleans’ and a Aglaia odorata "Chinese Perfume Plant". I also received 2 of the following from a sweet sweet DG friend. :)

Ahhhhh Happy Birthday, my friend....I'm so sorry...I've become horrible at keeping up with those!!!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

I would love to have any jasmine. If anyone out there gets a rooted piece....I'd be mighty blessed by one and gladly pay postage. I had a night blooming J years ago that I got from the NC Zoo's annual plant sale for zoo members.........anyway they do not have the sales anymore and my plant died in a house fire............anyway I sure did enjoy it and have wanted another for a long time. On the very rare occasion that I have seen a jasmine of any type, it has been way out of my price league..........guess I'll get a bottle of Jasmine room deodorizer again to satisfy the craving.....;-))

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Birdie I'll keep ya in mind "IF" the cuttings I'm trying to root of my Maid of Orleans start showing some growth. I'm just learning how to root things so it's trial and error...sadly too much error. Pop me a dmail in about a month as a reminder, please. I adore the scent of MOO's blooms!!!
