rob and others, where do you grow your nicotiana? Mine didn't survive 1 mo. they were planted in plant shade. don't really know why they died.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Nery - are you planting seeds or plants? They sulk some when transplanted but w/enough water they generally bounce back. I have mine in full sun in large planters all day but we don't get as hot in VA as ya'll do down there. Seedlings need to be coddled some - I probably would keep them in filtered light until they got a little size on them....making sure they didn't go too long w/o water...fish emulsion wouldn't hurt either...course that's my answer to every plant woe...LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

i planted plants. I am kinda afraid I underwatered mine. Maybe I will get this plant another try.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I have fresh seeds from mine this week, Nery if you'd like me to mail ya some.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hmmm. I greatly appreciate the offer, but I don't want it to be like the tahitian gardenia. at the rate I get around to sowing seeds, the nicotianas would be planted in 2009! lol

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Vossner,
My nicotianas are in dappled shade under palm trees. But they are all leaning towards the sun, it's actually funny! I am a water freak though, I water almost everyday. We have the same kind of dry weather, so I think you should give your nics more water!
I also got some seeds, should you need to start over ok? Gosh, I don't even know how I ever went without nicotianas before, I'm addicted!
Rob

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Man, I really think I have a "habit" going on, I just looked at my previous post and I had already said...how I'm addicted to smelling my nicotianas, lol

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

They are amazing, though...can't say it enough.
Nery - all ya gotta do is sprinkle them on some loose soil - then mist em till you can water. Very easy plants...promise! Sure you don't want some seed?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Yeah, she's got it Nery, I only managed after I followed her advice on this!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL - and I only followed the advice someone else gave me on DG...gotta keep the scent going....

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C, what do you mean ":mist til you can water" do you mean mist until they germinate then water like any other regular plant? I

If I got the seeds and simply threw some of the MG potting soil on top, enough to cover the seeds, would that be enough?

You are right, we gotta keep the frag. going. You know the buds on my NB cestrum have disappeared. Could have lost them to sudden excessive heat. i wondered if I'm gonna get any frag. this year. Bummer!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oopsss my bad....that was a horrible explanation...wasn't it?? Yes mist until they come up & you can water normally. Honestly if you have some loose soil in a pot just sprinkle the seed on the top. If on the ground scratch up the soil then sprinkle grit or course sand over top then sprinkle seeds on those....either way works...obviously keep out of direct sun...but you know that already

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hmmm. that sounds easy enough. If you should have the time, pls send them to me. thanks. you're such a good garden bud.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Nery - dmail me your addy...sure I have it but I'm lazy...LOL

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Nery, I'll go ahead and send you some of my green nicotianas too, this way you'll be sure to have enough to play with! Dmail me your info too.
Chantell, how are the ones I sent you doing? Yours are still little, but looking promising!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

sweet people, both of you. dmailing you

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Roberta - ^_^ I believe I saw them peeking over the plants I planted them behind...but I'll need to double check tonight. Nicotiana is truly one of my favs for scent...I just love it!

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hi guys. Been having connection issues lately. My nicotiana that I had from seed are in the "difficult" group for me because I get too much water this time of year. I still have one species that may live- moved it outside of the irrigation and the rain has let up....for now. Anyway, I'll know better next time if I want to try again with seeds and will put them in a different soil mix from seeds on. Any one particular species better than another???

Robbcorreia.....something you were saying about a habit? Ever notice how many of our fragrant plants are also toxic??? I swear, sometimes when I have my nose up a Brug I can smell something......in"toxic"ating......like that little element that makes it so good and yet so bad is distinguishable through scent.

Here is my picture of the day from the tropical co-op several months back. Don't know much about this plant. The "white bloom" is really modified leaves like a poinsiettia, etc. There is a little true flower just today. It is so far very faintly fragrant- kind of fruity and very light. Pretty "flower" though.

F4F - just about luminescent isn't she?!? Very nice!! I stand by my 'Fragrant Cloud' nicotiana for scent...love that spiciness!! The scented purple one from Parks...well I'm disappointed (someone else said the same)...barely a scent. I'd rather have scent then color if I have to make a choice. And yes...have noticed that whole "toxic" thing...ugh!!! I'm keeping the brugs and dats in the front yard where kids and critters don't go.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

F4F- I absolutely agree! I almost loose my balance when the breeze blows my brugmansias's scent towards me. it's absolutely intoxicating...ok guys, I got a brug addiction too I guess, lol!
Is that a curcuma you've got? I have a pink one and looks like your bloom. I haven't noticed a scent though...

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I agree that it's a curcuma. Ask Chris at BT, he'll tell you what it is. A few years ago I purchased a light blue curcuma from him and it is the most beautiful plant. It is the lightest of blues (maybe some would call it lavender) but paired next to a darker blue plant, it is simply out of this world.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hey all. LOL- it came from BT. I just nevered labeled my plants. Have it around here somehwere.......

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

This is Carolina Allspice just before the flowers open....and , yes, one does smell a hint of sweet frgrance,... wonder where it is coming from and actually have to search for the source----it's there, just not overowering ,.... it is not "obvious"
sorry for the sideways pic!

Carolina Jessamine, another wonderful fragrant bloomer...a lovely vine...easy to grow

This Viburnum was about 6' x 4' 13 years ago. It has a wonderful fragrance in the spring and now stands a good 15' x 12', the birds absolutely love it as it provides nesting and berries for food also. I have many "babies" around the main plant that I would be happy to share.

Birdie - how would you describe the fragrance on your Viburnum?

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

well, I'd feel better if spring had happened last week (poor memory)......I'm thinking perhaps light, sweet...honeysucklish?? I just know that is what I smell when it hits! I have 3 diff V's & ea has it's own distinct but similar fragrance....they are very light...you sort of do a double take as you are near it.....deffinately not like my Gardenia or even the Carolina Jessamine......I admire the way some people can describe...as a fruit or something...I don't have that gift...sorry........It's nice though! ;-)
Oh, and I've seen lots that are trimmed up much more than mine, but I try to maintain a wildlife habitat, as woodlandish as possible..........less yardwork that way too !

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I think I kinda know what you are trying to describe! Honeysuckle...perhaps 4 o'clock too...they are lightly sented and sweet...hummmm!

rob - yes I think you've got it! LOL I had actually forgotten that 4'oclocks have a fragrance, but our mention of it remindedd me of sitting on the porch of an older house that had many many of them around the porch and the air was ao very pleasant! Thanks for the memory.!
EFGeorgia - How beautiful! I don't know that I have ever seen one in "person", but that picture certainly makes me want to! Do you think they would grow in zine 7? I would love to grow some now that I know what I'm missing.

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

BB, I am in zone 7b (middle Georgia) I grow mine in pots, but am testing some in the ground. This one was one I planted in the ground after it had been in my temp greenhouse over the winter. They smell wonderful!!!!!!

Tonight we had the Queen of the Night in bloom....all the neighbors came around and we all watched it open up.....what a magical flower and the fragrance is out of this world, It started opening up around 6pm and its fully open now at midnight.

astic: How wonderful! How long now must you wait until it blooms again or does the plant die? I've read about these but not tried them.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Hemophobic, this was the first flower I had seen, Im not sure how long I must wait to see another one, no the plant doesnt die, just the flower.

It was worth the wait till midnight though
