Two wonderful stories. A special spot for the rock is needed absolutely and the special care for the tray table shows that the most special thing will never rust or be lost to the weather because the act of giving lasts forever in a special place of the heart. Lovely memories are the greatest treasures. Thank-you for sharing yours with us.
stones, rocks, boulders & erratics
Only in my heart.....
db - very nice vase - never seen one made from rock like that - have seen bird baths and plan to make one after the wall is done.
have some great photo's of boulders from Baxter state park that i will post here when i get caught up.
carrie, aren't husbands funny; they will take care of everyone but themselves. He would probably see a big improvement if he went to PT. They can really get those muscles stretched and back into shape.
Don't you love that the simple things(not bought in the store) are our most treasured possessions!
Sue
Sue, yes, and absolutely yes, or, absolutely yes, and yes. Clear as mud?

Wonderful shots Bill. Love the knife edge pic the best. Why do people like rocks and just feel a need to touch them? Beautiful scenery too, looks like a great trip.
nanegoat - that is a pic from I-95? Was it taken north of the south entrance? I've never been able to see it until just approaching the entrance. Of course i've not been there in the fall.
North bound 95 has a 'scenic overlook' before the rte 11 exit. We stop there to run the dogs on our way to Caribou. Can see it all year long.
very nice fall foliage - great shot! never been past the south entrance.
Your shots took so much more effort!!
Bill - what wonderful shots! Each was so interesting in its own right! And the vista was breathtaking!
Nance - love the fall shot! What a beautiful place New England is!
Thanks all for your appreciation of the "rock for Grammy" story. It was so sweet, but of course, I'm quite easily impressed when I'm the beneficiary of a child's generous thoughts!! LOL
Isn't it so true that the simplest things are the most valued!
Nanegoat, I never seen that mountain! It's as pretty as anything I saw in the Alps.
I love your stories. And your husbands. It makes me happy to know I did the right thing by letting DH go. I would rather live in a shoebox under the interstate w/ a sweet guy who cared about me than in a mansion w/ one who never did a thing- never lifted a finger around the house unless it was to press the remote from one sports channel to the other, while I killed myself. BTW, when HE was sick/hurt, the whole world had to come to a grinding halt while we doted on him. If I was ever sick it was "go to the Dr. or stop whining". To get back on topic, I like my rocks better! They sit around, but at least they are useful, don't complain and hog the remote!

Thanks Jax, I had one of those 'other' types in a previous life. For me, life has just begun!!
Was the extent of his verbal communication with you "Huh?"
Good for you, Nance! And having met your current DH, I can see why you are so happy. What a neat guy he is! You are both lucky but deserving! Enjoy! Lucky me too.......20 years in December! Seems like yesterday he swept me off my feet with 3 dozen daffodils!
Jax - LOL..."HUH?" That's too funny! Were your parting words, "Uhn, Uhn...."?
Louise, this thread has been absolutely amazing. We don't have anything like erratics that I know of. I'm crazy about all the beautiful rocks. We do have the world's largest granite monolith, but it's carved up and they do laser shows on its face. Many find this entertaining. urp.
Laurel
Hey, Laurel! Are you referring to Stone Mountain?
For me the stones and erratics are like the fall foliage......I NEVER get tired of seeing them and I never take them for granted, having grown up in Fla. with neither. There's something else interesting about that little granite vase I posted up above. For some reason, the flowers I put in it 10 days ago are still looking great! I think it may have something to do with the solid, cool nature of the granite.
How are things at Maypop tonight? Where are the bees? And where is the Keeper???? LOL
That would be Stone Mountain. When we first moved to GA, the klan had annual rallies there. I can't go for that reason alone.
I never get tired of seeing the beautiful erratics and other natural, unique views of the panoramas NE'esters have posted on this thread. Hope you all realize how the natural gifts of your region impact those of us who live elsewhere. I thoroughly respect your regional pride.
Laurel
DonnieB, his parting words weren't expressed b/c I was with my mineral club in a mine, hunting rocks, when he cleaned out his closet and split!!! He chose a day when I would be gone from 6 AM- 6PM, so he figured he could weasel away. (Sorry, weasels!) He left me a note saying he was in CA on business. I went upstairs and his closet was cleaned out! Nice, huh???
Saturday, I am visiting the Simpson Quarry in Portland, Conn., looking for XL beryl, flourite, an smoky quartz crystals!!! Wish me luck. I haven't found much so far this year.
P. S.- I am hoping to enroll in the Geology concentration at Salem State College this Sept.! I may have to take core courses b/f any geology, tho' :0(
Rock on!!!
Nice! Look how smooth they are. Amazing what wind and water can do.
Very nice pics Bill. You can almost see by the worn rocks how high the water can get in the spring.
Bill - thanks for posting those gorgeous boulders for us all to enjoy. My DH has just gone for a hike in the woods behind us with a friend, and I presented him with the camera and some specific instructions to get shots of some of our favorite erratics and an old stone cattle pound from the 1700s. That cellar hole is very hard to find in the woods, and he's hoping he can find it. It was a magnificent place with several stone foundations and wells still there. Once we found the trash dump there and it was loaded with wonderful things like wooden marbles and a completely in tact pair of ladies leather lace-up boots in about a size one! There were also some silver pieces and great medicine bottles. Fortunately, the cellar hole thieves hadn't discovered its treasures yet.
We haven't been there in a few years, so I'm anxious to see how it is now. If he can find it, I'll post some neat shots. Nearby, there is an awesome erratic with a bear cave under it. I hope he can find that too.
Laurel - re the Stone Mountain Clan comment....I know what you mean. When I did my student teaching in NC, I had the Grand Dragon's daughter in one of my classes. I had to have a parent-teacher conference with him and it gave me the creeps!! I'm so glad to see that the statute of limitations has not kept some of the murderer creeps from being prosecuted. (yikes - hope that isn't too political to say!)
Amen to that Louise, political or not.
I hope Hank finds these spots you've intrigued us with!
a bear cave huh - is his friend slower than your hubby? :)
He did find them, Nance! And no, Bill, his friend is probably faster! They succeeded in finding the cellar hole and the erratic cave - minus the bear! LOL
This first shot is of the remaining part of one wall of the cattle pound. There are stone walls in a V shape that led the cattle into the pound. BTW, in some of these shots you will notice that Hank puts a hat on a stick to give you some perspective as to the size of the erratics, etc.. Our friend is standing next to the wall in this first one, so that gives some perspective as well.
