....then she must have a real good reason for doing so and I'd have to.........
Need ADVICE ASAP Lighting Strike
next time we eat them i will call them prawns... the kids will think it is a new seafood...
i don't have anything to answer for. and no cliffs nearby. as you know, this chickenhead is also a chicken slave, so the only time i get to leave is to get chickenfood or chickenwater. or more chickens from the PO...
SC has been too busy hatching out new babies to deal with you guys, i think she left the keys to insanity in my care. who wants them next?
t-f
Is it possible, even a tiny bit, that you have misplaced them? LOL : )
now TIA!!! you are getting me in trouble WO-MON!!!
Christy, congrast on your bucket. after all that work and feed, i would have eaten the cornish myself...
we need to refill our buckets i think. and i saw some old neighbors moved back. remember last fall when i lost my breeding duck, PerfectBuckeye and a laying leghorn hen to a GSmix adult and a GS puppy? they moved without paying up. now they moved back, and had the nerve to bring both dogs back, and neither are being kept in the back yard...
no, i mis-place dth ekeys to SANITY. i've got the keys to IN-sanity right here in my pocket.... err the other pock,,,, which pants was i wearing when...
my son saw the dog and told me to LOAD THE GUN...
yep but try and wound it so u dont kill it then they will hav to pay a huge vet bill to fix it
when i took them the video showing their dogs going intot he henhouse and killing chickens... they said they were sorry and would keep them locked up. and you would think after paying 1500 for the puppy that they coudl fix their fence...
i am going out now to check on the birds.... luckily the mama duck is locked up
oh yeh how many chicks dose she have now
Oh look TF, I've found your insanity. It was stuck to my shoe. let me just get it for ya....... Ahhh! It's stuck on me now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ; P
thanks patchouli, i needed a break from it. you can keep it safe a while right? patchouli? you OK??????
...everybody is locked up. poor olive only has three good eggs, one is cracked.... those dern leghorns!!!
the lady with the dogs has quite a few kids. i wouldn't want her creep-o hubby shelling out money to fix those dogs and taking away from those kids... we are keeping a watch out for them... maybe they will move again soon...
Ugh with *#$%@ neighbors! And don't worry TF, insanity and me are old friends, just ask my shrink, lmao!
OK, but i will be needing those keys back soon....
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TF... I need a chicken fairy visit! where is she and how can I lure her to my home?
go to the temptation thread tamara will get you hooked up with chicks
ha ha ha, I did talk with my mom and we are going to move the 1st batch, the crested up to her house in the barn, but remember she is having a snake problem so we are going to put down sulfur all around the barn and her chicken coop. Hope that will help.
oneanjl....I don't think you have to lure her.......she seems to pick up on the teeny tiniest desire and shows up! Some are hiding right now from her in fact! LOL
On another note.....I got my bucket, I got my bucket! And now your not going to believe this, I almost don't. My DH not only found the 3/8'' drill bit......he changed the bit and drilled the holes! hee hee! Last night I had just sat down at the pc and he hollered in the window....I got you stupid stuff if you wanna do this.....(ha ha ha). Oh yes I went flying out the door. I also found out that he IS in fact listening to me even when I think he isn't, because when he drilled the holes he put them in the exact perfect places. I had told him before about the whole process so he knew where to put them. I can't believe it. I know one thing......he has never shook his head so much doing anything before....the head shake and noise that says, I must be nuts, I must have lost it real good somewhere....LOL!
Well, my yellow bucket is now hanging in it's tree with it's first offering....with detailed instructions to my kido's to not tell what is IN the bucket or what it is supposed to do......that if anyone should ask what it is to tell them it is a protein feeder. I also explained to them that it is not a bad thing, but that a lot of people might not understand so it is just better if they don't know about it. My kids are always happy to share anything and everything about all the critters and all the going's on here with anyone that will listen that telling them what not to share is very important.
tf....If I had found the cornish yesterday morning, I would have probably gotten the pot to boiling...but my DH did before he went to work and then didn't say anything or take it out. By the time I found it yesterday afternoon when I did the water/feed check it was for sure too late. Not only was it too long dead in the heat, but the others had walked all over it. The poor thing was not looking too good. At least it's not a complete loss. btw....how long before I can expect to see little falling proteins?
Christy
That is just awesome Christy, I know my hubby is amazing me. We went to put the birds to bed and he was talking to them. He also told me that we will need to get ready this fall to start cleaning up some to eat. HA HA you could have knocked me down with a feather on that one. He is coming around. Just wait until he finds out I ordered 25 keets. The 75 pullets I ordered wont be a problem. I will try and get him up to moms next week to work on her barn we need to remodel it to house some chickens. We have 10 5X5 stalls I want to make into a coop.
wow, tia osunds like LOTS of room.....
Christy, you should see soemthing in 2-4 days. i think it depends on the kind of fly. but at first there will be so few only the chickens will see...
when soemone comes over to buy chickens or egggs, i instruct my kids to LEAVE US BE... and you can't see either bucket from the driveway/parking area.
big hugs to you both, doesn't it feel good when DHs come around to the right way of thinking?
Oh for sure it does.
I'll tell ya, I think being a part of this forum has opened my eyes a lot when it comes to really observing different things. I payed attention before, but for me going out several times a day to do this or that chore it just becomes so habit like that I stopped paying as much attention as I should have. Since I found this site I have found a new interest in it all and all aspects of it. I love learning more and more about everything every single day and my excitement has built a lot more conversations with my DH about all of it. I share with him what I learn, things he didn't even know before and we have a lot to talk about now. I think all that has kind of 'pulled' him into looking at different things in different ways too and even has him wanting me to ask and find out answers to questions he has. This forum has been really wonderful for us!
Do you know about raising keets, tia? It is a lot like raising chicks, but a little different. It sounds like you have a lot of different options for where you can put your chicks and chickens...is your mom excited about it?
Christy
Yea we did have keets before and they were free range and then they just started dissapering one by one. We only had 6 i think. Yes mom is excited to it just so long as I take care of them LOL.
I to have learned to watch things more since being here. Got an email from DG yesterday saying my sub is up in 1 month, I was like yes for sure I will do a year when it is time. It has also brought me and dh to talking more and he seems to even listen to me. Again knock me down with a feather. I think we are going to work on the coop this weekend, that is he is, I have a family reunion this weekend that starts friday and ends sunday, but good thing it is at my moms.
2-4 days....cool. I was wondering if I would end up taking a peek inside the bucket to see what's going on...you know, like a kid waiting for a goody to come out of the oven and they keep opening the oven door to look? lol I might be able to resist this temptation!
I wish we had a better way to hide our bucket, but where as we are right in the middle of nowhere, we are also right on the road with a limited amount of trees to hang from. I figured we had to also hang it with where the 'goodies' would fall out and the chickens would see them easily. It's not hanging right in the front yard, as DH pointed out that might not be such a good idea last night (duh....I just smiled and said, no foolin?) It really can't be seen right where people usually pull up though.....they'd really have to go over to the barn and brooder house. Hopefully we don't have any problems or any slips of mentioning thing!
and yes, yes, yes it feels fantastic to have him coming around to 'my' ideas!!! I didn't know much about anything before so didn't have anything to add before....he has always been the farm boy. I think it is for sure like the saying goes....knowledge is power!
Christy
well, who knows who else might be hleping with those pens then?! anyone who doesn't want to sit around and eat and talk LOL
yes, knowledge is wonderful, does wonders too. i hop ehtat bukcet isn't too high. you want them to fall straight down, not get blown by th ewind. his pictures show them just a few feet up, mine are just over my head but have the building for a windbreak...
When I do mine I will hang them from the rafters in the coop. I think, just had visuals of them birds flying up on top of the bucket.
After all this time having passed the birds must surely be far too stiff to harvest. I can't see any harm in skinning/processing a poultry immediately after being electrocuted. A while back a neighbor pulled a dead cow out of our stream ... loaded it up onto his pickup truck bed and took it home to slaughter. It was already bloating. I know it sounds bad but chances are the meat was perfectly okay. The guy is a Mexican immigrant ... and Hispanic farmers seem to be a bit more practical than the the little ole white ladies who buy their "filet mignon" cuts at the local butcher shop. Kelly in Moxee
ewwwwwwwwwww, I dont think I could.
I could tell you stories about some butcher shops that would turn your guts....so I won't. Let's just say I would NEVER visit the ones I have heard those stories about, no matter how good their meat cases look! Like anything else, there are really good ones that follow the rules, and some that don't.
i dont lik eating anything that has a name
Lucky... I'm with you on that one....
guess I gotta go tell DH that the roo he named "Dinner" cant be eaten...cause he named him! :o)
so dinner aint gona be dinner than cool will they tak it back or you could give it to som one who needs a roo
Well, I don't blame you.....on not being able to eat something that has a name. The first time we butchered a chicken it didn't have a name. Being a city girl at the time, I was more curious about it all than put off. I have learned to enjoy the animals while we are raising them and then when butchering time comes I say 'God bless you, thank you for being a meal for us.' It might sound a bit odd, but that is how I have learned to deal with it. I have learned to separate my pet from my dinner and roosters or toms for us are almost always going to become dinner. It is easier to look at it that way from the start. That said, I had a harder time than I expected when we butchered our tom turkey. He was the only one out of a whole group that wasn't killed by dogs and he had a name, in fact two of them. Thomas the Turkey and Mr. Big Stuff. Other than butchering, what really are the options? I don't know anyone that wants a grown pet turkey so we could have sold him.....so someone else could eat him or we could take pride in raising the best tasting turkey I've ever had.
Christy
oh i could never kill somthig (on purpose) :(
You know, it's all a personal choice as are most things. I don't look differently on anyone else if they can't, as I hope no one looks down on me for being able to.
Christy
no of course not i dont look down on any one for being able to do it i mean some one needs to do it we need it to get meat its just i dont lik doing it it all depends how you hav been brought up sum people lik u had never experienced it so you were curious other people just dont lik doing it because well i dont know y because my brother was braught up the same way as me and he dose it but i dont so it must be personalty hmm we need to get to the bottom of this dont we wat are your thoughts on it
I really wonder how much it has to do with how you look at it from the start. If you look at the cute little baby chick and always look at it as a pet and friend and nothing else, I don't think you are going to ever be able to butcher it. For me with chicks, I just don't think about their future. It seems so far away, so I look at them as cute baby chicks and enjoy them. I don't look at them with dread and horror at what their future is going to hold. This really helps when you have no idea if you have a he or a she. Even as we can figure out the roos from the pullets we don't look at the roos with dread. We enjoy them, notice how they change in their own ways as they grow, admire them. We don't really look at them as pets or as dinner. When butchering time comes, that is what their intended purpose was.
Like I said, I think it is how you have your mind set from the beginning. Our kids are 5 and 7....they don't have any problems with it either. To them like to us, it is what it is. If raising a dog for meat purposed suddenly become a very popular thing to do though, none of us would be able to do that. The cats and the dogs are our pets and have never been looked at as anything else.
Christy
i agree with you your version makes a lot more sense than mine
When we had goats I had 4 butchered right in the barn, no one would come out there to help and let me tell ya I was turning green on one of them. They all had names also and I did the same thing, bless you for eating the grass and growing up so we could eat you. We smoked them about 5 days later OMG they were so good. I had a hard time convincing the family to at least try a bite. Once they did they got over oh they use to be out in the back yard and so cute.
well when i was about 13 we had 3 lambs i got home from school one day and 3 lambs turned into 1 lamb and all of a sudden we had lot of lamb i was furious because they used my sheep and not one of the other ones LOL
