Looking for info. on Peahens & cocks

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I want some so bad, but hubby wont let me, I was able to sneek in some keets and he is OK with that. No way I can sneak in a peacock. And I can get them for free, his aunt has them.

Sonoita, AZ(Zone 8a)

Yeah, if or when I get more peas it will be muticans as much as possible! I still don't know what sexes I have from 3/5 chicks I bought. My 2 india blues are males for sure, but I can't tell with the 2 purples or 1 purple pied.

Sonoita, AZ(Zone 8a)

luvs - my tactic is when my husband misbehaves, I don't get mad, I get even....new dog, new fowl, new tractor implement....some girls like jewelry & clothes, then there are us girls!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

You got that right girl friend, I dont get mad i get even. and dont even think of jewlery or clothes or shoes, I want birds.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Great job Sonoita! Wanna come help me work on a new one? If I start breeding and want true breeds, I will need at least one more pen. Then, with the little white guy I will be getting in a few more months, will definitely have to have another white for a mate....hmmm, another breeding pen?? Maybe let the IB's go free & hope for them, then keep BS & White in pens.......thinking, dreaming....
Hey, check the UPA site. I am listed as a breeder??? Are you? I don't have enough to sell anyone yet......lol
Glad to hear their all doing well Sonoita, Wanna see pix of that spaulding.....envy here!

hello, I am new to raising peafowl. I rescued a 4 year old peahen 1 1/2 years ago. I built her a beautiful 10 x 6 x 8 pen. She was in a 2 x4 x 4 before that for 4 years. And Im talking this cage was only 2ft high she is 3 feet tall how cruel don't you think to do that to such a beautiful creature. Well anyway she is safe now. here is my worry. I feed her pellets, cat food, fruits, vegies. and meal worms. she is very sweet and loves to talk to us. She was laying eggs before i got her but since then she has not layed at all. Can anyone tell me what to do I am afraid of her getting egg bound and dying. We just love her so much.
Please help we are so worried.

I am so glad to hear you got that poor girl out of that awful living environment. I wish I had some advice on the egg bound. This spring I lost my hen I had for 7 years to egg bound. I knew she was not doing well because she was dragging her wings and not acting right. She and her mate are free ranged so I couldn't catch her to check her out. It sounds like you are doing all the things I do. I even give the cat food in winter for added protein. If she looks good and healthy I wouldn't worry too much. When I got my hen she also was laying. I kept her up for a year and then set her free. I didn't get any eggs that first year at all. After While she was alive I got 2 clutches every year after having her for a year. I got a new hen this spring and she also didn't lay a second clutch. It may just be a getting "settled" thing. By the way. What color/breed is she? I have a blue India male and black shoulders hen.

i am no expert and i am probably wrong but i think i remember some one saying the conditions have to be right for a peahen to lay and that they dont usualy lay in cages or somthing like that

I know nothing about peafowl, but I would think if you had her a year and a half and she has not hap any problems then you might be okay.

Hi this may seem like a crazy question but I am hunting for a young peachick.... The reason I am looking is my hen laid two eggs and I hatched one of them so I have one lonely chick... LIVING IN MY HOUSE!!!! I just don't have the heart to put him outside yet as he is alone and is very much a pet because he has been with us. At night he isn't happy until we let him sleep on our shoulder while we watch TV. I say all that to say this...... this little guy needs one or two other chicks around his age to be raised with outside. He is about 4 weeks old now so I am looking for one close to that age. I know it may be hard to find one because it was so late when the hens laid the eggs but I am looking. I am really hoping to get one or two peachicks that are hens. He is a male. The peacock (his sire) his blackshoulder and hen was indian blue. Ideally I would like a black shoulder hen chick but would honestly take just about anything if you had one or two to sell this late in the year.

Kim

Picture is of him sitting in my Ficus tree... I am trying to be a good peahen to teach him all he needs to know.

How wonderful! I hope someone can help you. They did have peacock eggs on eBay a few weeks ago--but they were very expensive.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Manemmy - Peafowl are very hardy birds. I agree, after a year & a half; what you are doing is working! She is probably awaiting a mate. One of mine didn't lay, no male around. Still not certain she laid one of the eggs I got this year or not. BTW, after 6+ years, I am still not certain I am doing everything right. If egg bound, certain you would see other symptons. She would look in discomfort or sick. No expert, so please don't quote me!

Needpeachick - Check UPA. There are MANY breeders in TX. Also, you may find something on Craigslist in your area. That is how I found my new babies (although much older now). I also belong to UPA. Alot of good info there for Peafowl owners & breeders.

http://www.peafowl.org/

Happy searching. Good luck choosing just one or two - I went for 2, ended up with 4 chicks and one peahen. Sonoita started wanting just a few, I think. She too has quite a few now....lol Pretty sure Daylillydaddy is totally 'hooked' too.....lol

Sonoita ~ you still holding that white chick for me? Ready for early Christmas, if chick is older enough now....lol Back to no typing; shoulder major pain again. Hope doc can do something tomorrow.

UPA is the way to go! There are experts assigned to each area of the forum to answer questions. First read, read, read! I currently have 8, one of which Ms. PeafowlAnjl has her heart on (by the way she is looking like a black shoulder, 10 wks old last Friday).
I bought eggs on Ebay, bad move! 1/5 hatched :( On eggbid, I purchase my other 7 chicks from 'tragman' out of NY, he has high quality birds, fair prices and excellent customer service!

Here is another one I am breeding. It is a Pied Spalding hen.

Those are absoulutly beautiful i love Peacocks and Brugs.........

Sonoita, AZ(Zone 8a)

Kenboy - Welcome, those are some nice peas your growing! Your pied hen is very bold!

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

The Pied hen in the second picture is 7/8 Java blood and is less than a year old. I am now breeding for 15/16 Java blood to really give them some color. Java hens have color just like the males do, unlike the India Blues. I have been working on this line of Birds since 1984.

wow he is beautiful.

Sonoita, AZ(Zone 8a)

Kenboy - I have a 5/8spalding blackshoulder hen I'm thinking I want to breed to a higher % spalding male. Yours are beautiful. I am staying away from too much white because I let my birds free roam and white attracts predatures.

morehead, KY(Zone 6a)

Kenboy
Your birds are beautiful! I want to add some Java blood so bad to mine, but I am scared my winters might be too hard on them. Mine free range. Keep the pics coming. I may not be able to have Java's, but love looking at them!

Very pretty birds Ken

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Wow Kenboy! Just LOVE your peafowl. Just gorgeous! Ya got more pixs? Please (begging here) lol

Sonoita, if you still want to find a new home for the little guy, I'm game BS or white, no matter. Seem I got lucky & both the BS chicks I got this summer are showing a lot of color - from everything I have read, that puts them as males. Still hoping, as one of my BS hens has a bit color in the neck too.....

Cheryl ~ Pea

PS: on drugs, so can type for a bit - till doc tells me no more. ^_^

morehead, KY(Zone 6a)

Ken have you ever thought of selling eggs of your peafowl on the classifieds?? I would be very interested if you did.
George

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Ooh Ooh, Me to -- next spring I should be able to fit it in my budget & have bator ready to go. GREAT IDEA!

I would be interested in yours too George, would you be listing in the classifieds in the future?

Cheryl ~ Pea

morehead, KY(Zone 6a)

After I see thing "settle" here on DG. I would consider selling. I had hoped to sell plants and other things also. I am still trying to figure out what protection a seller has here first.
George
I will also have guineas(I have 6 different colors), Turkens and blue laced red wyandottes eggs to sell also if things get worked out here.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

I totally understand. Better to wait & see how things go, for any and all who want to buy or sell. Sure like your birds too (all of them). I may be able to use some more wyandottes. Seems a small Hawk or Falcon has taken to my banties. Trying everything but locking them up for life to deter it.

Ya get that Lady pheasant for your garden? Or next spring project? Envy here. Will be a while for me before I am ready for different pheasants or quail.

Cheryl ~ Pea

Sonoita, AZ(Zone 8a)

Is selling from DG a no no? Or is there a special protocol? I know they ask pros to make themselves known and seperate. I'm nieve in this area.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

If I have figured things correctly, I believe you can place an ad in the classifieds if you are selling something (Silkiechick & others have a few eggs for sale there). Know something is happening in the Co-op thread. Would say check the Co-op *sticky*, but believe it is a bit confusing at this point. Gonna wait til sis (oneanjl) tells me what's going on their....

Now, are you really confused? ^_^

Cheryl ~ Pea

Sonoita, AZ(Zone 8a)

Yup, I'm confussed. Are you suggesting I check out our co-op group, or general co-op guidlines?
YOur little girl is looking more and more like a black shoulder female. She is released with everyone else, but still behaving a bit intimidated. I have no blackshoulder females and wouldn't mind keeping her, but my word is good and if you really want her, she's yours. If I am lucky I should be having some chicks w/white hatching this summer, and you are welcome to one or two for the cost of shipping. Let me know girlfriend.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

General Co-op forum - the sticky. Seems as of last week, they were working things out to keep it going. Better yet, check with Anjl, she is following it.

On the little lady, I will leave it up to you. I know all to well how easy it is to become attached....lol. I currently have two BS of each. One elder peahen old enough to breed & one may be old enough next summer. Then the two chicks (males) that have 1 1/2 years to go. That being said, I too am good on my word. I will still take - white or BS. Will let you make the call on that one.....you did all the work, etc....fell in love......you get the idea.

Either way, I will definitely be interested in any whites you have next year. ^_^
