The P & L DAILY CHAT THREAD #1 - Anything goes!!!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

nah, just throw dirt around

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

dang it, almost had me convinced, if they would weed then I was sure into about 30 or so.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

they are real good at trampling flowers too. and eating flower seeds

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

yeah, if eating the plants too is considered weeding! We had to chase our out of the garden last night.....after they go a hold of a cucumber plant. The did a bit of damage, but I think we saved it. With those big beaks I bet they could polish off a garden in no time! I sure hope I don't find out 1st hand!!

Bronze breasted......so pretty! We have had Black Spanish, Royal Palms, Jumbo Whites and now we have a few small Bourbon Reds. I'm not sure how the Bourbon Reds will come out, but they are already very pretty. I wonder if all turkey's eat that 187 lbs of feed? It sure seems like we wouldn't be able to keep them if they went through that much. Of course, it's not all at once so maybe added all together it would be? yikes!

L2G......you might want to do some shopping around for feed. We feed our turkey's a high protein turkey feed and get it for about $12 for a 50 lb bag. I know different areas have different prices so you might want to check into it. I think the 50 lb bags would save you a lot of money. Our chick starter crumbles are $9 and change for a 50 lb bag. Maybe DH could go with you on a weekend to help you lift the bags?

Christy

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

yep, those great big feet can do some serious damage for sure!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

OFF to the grocery store, grandson is coming to stay for a few days and he will sure starve to death out here will what I have. He is so picky. Plus I gotta get chicky treats.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

thier big feet just stomp everything down. they walk over the top of everything

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I will check where I got the feed this past week also sold their pine mulch a dollar higher than normal, so maybe my reg. feed store will have it cheaper and yes hubby will have to take the feed out of the back of the truck.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

woolnweave, that is EXACTLY why he did that. a roos job is to loook out for hens and their eggs. just keep reminding him they are YOUR hens and YOUR eggs and YOUR babies, all the while respecting he IS a rooster. and carry that big stick, but don't point it at him, i toculd instigate him during this time...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

hey tf.. explain the pointing... I understand different body languages but never thought of an animal reading the ol pointed finger... I mean a pointed finger would set me off in a snap.. just never thought of a chicken thinking the same way..

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, you are moving the large stick in his direction, he considers that a threat, he doesn't know what the stick is. shoot, once my favorite Buckeye roo Perfect came at me when i was dragging a hose right by him, so i hose whipped him. when i saw who it was, i coudlnt' belvive he had ocme at me. so i moved the hose again, sure enough, he was after the hose...

then also consdier htat in pointing hte stick your whole arm is gestering in his direction, so the stick is making your arm longer and more threatening. once they attack you shoulc whip em good, but don't ever provoke a roo who is watching over his hens. instead remind him that HE IS YOURS... YOU ARE WATCHING OVER HIM AND HIS KIND>... sometimes you have to be mean, but often a little respect goes a long way.

yep, don't ever point at me LOL. a gal did that at a party last week. she left the party...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL are you my twin sister. 2 things that I will not stand for is pointing a finger and pulling my hair. The fight is on

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Tracy, unfortunately, I had a Buff Orpington rooster that turned mean in it's second year. Mcamden also had one that did the same thing. I don't know about other breeds but there may be a strain of BOs that have a mean streak in them.

I actually ended up blinding mine with a stick I used to keep him away from me. He would attack me when my back was turned. My DH used to think it was funny until Tawny attacked him. The next day Tawny went into the freezer and we made two pots of chicken and dumplings with him. He was about 10 lbs dressed.

londonderry, Australia

i have only had one overly mean roo and it was a huge RIR i gave it to my friend and he says he has never had a problem with it

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

my oscar came in the coop yesterday and puffed up his feathers and looked like he was gonna flog me. i took my stick, pounded it on the floor an said don't think about it big boy. he turned around and left

londonderry, Australia

all show and no cahonys

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

yep, which was good for him. my husband is intimidated by oscar. he works out of town so oscar gets curious when hubby goes in thecoop

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

yep.. billy the bully (blk silkie) actually crowed this morning.. lol.. geez they sound so sad & sick when they first crow, don't they? Thats 3 I have crowing full time...
None of the layers have crowed yet.. in fact so far not sure if any of them are roosters.. only suspisions.. 12 weeks old.. I guess silkies & batums must mature earlier??

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

he never sees hubby, so thinks he is an intruder. show him exactly how you used the stick, and get him to do it too! good job!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Got one youngster crowing within the last week. They were hatched April 8th. That makes him about 13 weeks old. He has a very pretty crow. Almost sounds like my Rocky.

GG

londonderry, Australia

well my silkie roo stayed horrible he is 6 months and he still cant do it all the others could at his age

josh

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

the first time oscar tried to crow, i thought there was a goat in my yard!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Well Nemo, my bantum barred plymouth rock is a little more interested in the girls than just sitting back and crowing.. but I am not sure that he even knows what he wants..
he straightens one wing out.. kind of like a "lady in waiting" grabbing her skirt with one hand to dance.., his wing goes way back by his tail.. and he moves around in a circle around a hen.. the hen just lookes at him like shes memerized at this loon.. then in a flash he will jump at her, she flutters.. he falls to the ground... LOL... he moves on to the next hen.. he spent the whole day yesterday.. dancing to the left with the girls.. all I kept singing was.. "to da left, to da left, to da left, to da left. He is so darn small.. never did get made.. just kept trying...

londonderry, Australia

well i didnt think mine had it in him until i incubated his girls first eggs and they were all fertile

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

all oscar does is get him slf a little all day!

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL fran.....sounds like Nemo is trying to court them and then gets a bit too excited about it all....kinda like a teenager!

Lucky....your roo must have been sneaking it in here and there!

jkj.....I bet your roo is one happy fella....LOL!!

When we had our two roo's the RIR was dominant over the Barred Rock so the Barred Rock would sneak it in and be very fast about it so he didn't get caught by the RIR. It was pretty funny......and the BR would sometimes get caught and take off running! : )

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i could really use some good htoughts coming my way. it rained all night so the chickens are going nuts after all the bugs, and the ditch is full of water, but there is just enough room at the front of the property to cross over and my 4 1/2 month old pullet barred rock has a little more to learn about property boundaries, she was shot at with a 12 guage by that 80+ year old withc while i was milking brandywine, who of course, followed my over there. she offered to kill the chicken, i told her since she would go to jail, she may as well kill the goat while she was at it...

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

TF, i think i would have taken the gun and shot her. i am so sorry

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

my husband says she didn't shoot a second time becasue her shoulder must have been sore, but it didn't look sore to me as she cocked it again.... my goat wandered onto her sons property right then and there, and i had to follow her a whole block before i could get her to turn around, the whole time with my back to a loaded gun... if she doesn't know it by now, i am not easily scared, but i am easiuly TICKED OFF...

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

did you call the law?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

we have been going through this ever since my chickens started laying eggs and i got more $ for mine... we have been to court, we are in debt for lawyer fees. until she actaully DOES soemthing illegal, all they will do is come out and act non-chalant and not even file a report unless i insist.... but their day is coming i suppose...

actually, now that i think of it, although that pullet was on the other side of the fence, she was still on OUR property... becasue of where their trees are planted, we were kind enough to put the fence a few feet onto our side...

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

go get her. if it was me, i'd be in jail

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

oh my gosh tf.....what horrible people!! Do you mean that even when she had a LOADED gun pointed at your back, when you blocked her shot at Brandywine, she was still not breaking any laws and the cops won't do anything? That is outrageous! So what would she have to do, actually shoot you before they consider it as something bad?

I will never, never, NEVER understand how people can be so nasty over something so small! uggggg!

My thoughts are with you tf.......and I hope there are no other problems!

Christy

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i don't know where it was pointed, i wasn't looking at her, i was herding my goat back home...

they are just mean and greedy all about money and property to them. and yes according to our sheriffs dept, until they threaten a PERSON'S life they aren't breaking any laws. but they will come out just as soon as they ACTUALLY shoot soemthing...so much as on elittle chick...

i just alwasy figure, no matter how mean someone is, she can't live forever, and i got the rest of my life ahead of me. also, that was not HER property, that was her son's [the convicted chilce molestor, who, as a flenon, cna' tbe firing o0ff weapons] so she STILL is pushing hte letter of the lasw if she thinks she can say she is protecting it... and no she doesn't live there either...

i will be OK, just had to vent. will be keeping a close eye on things today, and keeping the security camera recording. her guineas better not come onto MY property... i may be a better shot than her LOL

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

yeah, then you'll have supper

Foley, MO

Oh tf, don't be picking on that poor ole' woman. Just kiddin', lol! You know what I think about those kind of neighbors : ( I don't know if I wouldn't file a police report on how she threatened me and my goat (EG). Crazy old coot!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

TF, I know just how you feel about having nasty neighbors. Fortunately since we moved here, we don't have any. And if you don't think that I thank the Good Lord about that, you would be mistaken. Maybe what you need to point out to her is that it is YOUR property the pullet was on. You might have to do what we did when we had that problem. Put the fence exactly on the property line.

When we first bought this place, we had it surveyed. It turned out that our neighbors property encroached on ours by 20 feet. Another neighbor had his well dug five feet on our property. Fortunately the one that was 20 feet over is very good with us and they are the ones that we would have look after the kids if we decided to go away for a while. The one whose well was on our property had a new house put up and had to move the well anyway. He has since died and the property is up for sale. I told DH to cut all the trees down on the side that is 20 feet over so that no one could say it was theirs.

GG ^_^
