As far as the mess goes, you can always buy a duck diaper system. Then you can let them run around the house!
I swear it is true
http://www.thegoosesmother.com/id47.html
For those who raise DUCKS. I have a question
NOOOOOOOOOOO there will not be any ducks in the house. I can see it now my mom saying I want one of them. I am sure they with diapers will be better than the " potty trained" dogs. that insist on you know what in the house. They are outside now.
Oh goodness......I think I have really seen it all now.....a diaper for ducks and geese. I'm sure it is fine for some, but my ducks and geese will stay outside......just like we both like it! : )
Christy
That is the most hestical thing I've ever saw.... I thought it wild that you could train a bunny to a litter box, now ducks with diapers.....Holy quackers.....
Janet
Once you've had a duck, and I mean really tame and close. You'd understand why someone came up with duck diapers. Aflak would make the perfect house duck with diapers! By the way, I just got done playing with my ducks and you know you're in love if you sniff your hands and are like "ahh"! I love that ducky smell, LOL!
OMG, and to think i ALMOST ordered 25 asst ducks this week. by the time i got the nerve they were sold out.... maybe next week, right L2G2?
Okay--intervention time. tf no more babies! Get rid of he extra you have first.......Did it work?
A duck diaper :) Now my kids will want one of those for the duck. They already want chicken diapers.
Bet I could make that :)
I'm trying to decide if I should move the geese or the ducks away from the chickens. Today Hanzel the goose tried to murder one of the ducks. They were in their pool and he sat on it and used his beak to hold the duck's head under the water. Clearly it's time to separate them but who should move out?
MollyD
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am not ordering anymore. Nothing nada wont happen!!!!!!!!!!
Quack, Quack , Quack luvs2, LOL! Come on, you know you want to ; ) Molly, since the goose is the perpetrator he should go! I'm duck biased though : )
NO NO NO, I told hubby about my idea for a duck or 2 in the goldfish pond and he said, had the nerve to call me an idiot. i just smiled, he said how long do you thin it would take for the duck(s) to go to the pond, that is not protected by a fence. I just smiled
Hey, I'm just saying; once you get them you'll wonder why it took so long : )
Of course L2G you'll have to keep replacing those goldfish so hubby won't know the ducks ate them!
Patch we're leaning in that direction.
MollyD
That is just it there are no gold fish in there
they won't drown each other, they are fighting to establish dominance. but if it doesn't go away, then the goose should. after all, this IS a duck thread...
L2G2, sounds like a perfect pond for ducks, hurry and put a fence around it...
LOL no fish! Good one L2G!
TF this wasn't that nice! He let go of the poor thing only cause I had the hose and turned it on him. The duck came up sputting.
MollyD
Te goose, quite probably was trying tpo breed the duck. The like to do it in the water
I hope not! I think that duck is male and besides Hansel has a lovely mate named Gretel.
MollyD
lock hansel and gretel up to get it out of his system, or put hansel in the pot!
TF we're looking for a way (a where) to put the geese. I wondered if they could go live with the goats or at least the kids. They'd make great watch geese for them.
No pot for Hansel!!! I want them to produce goslings that will eventually go into a pot :-)
MollyD
That's great Molly!!! L2, TF is right, you must put a fence around the pond and QUICKLY! Hurry up, or it will soon be too late, (EG) : ) I'm telling you, nothing is as pleasing as your plethra of ducks quacking and greeting you every morning. Or the ducklings as they follow you around your yard quacking and wagging their tails. Oh yes, they wag their tails! Too cute ; )
when we got goats they took over the duck/goose pen... they get along fine...
Thanks tf I'll give that a try this week and see if it works out. Paul is afraid they'll end up fox food there but I think they can deal with a fox. More worried about the coyotes getting hungry.
Patch no pond here. Just kiddee pools.
MollyD
Oh, no, I was talking to Luvs2 about her fishless fish pond : )
Oh boy, all this duck talk is making me miss our ducks and ducklings soooo much. DH decided that we had to cut back and focus more on our future breeding program and decided if we 'he' had to chose between a duck or goose for future meat purposes, he'd choose the geese. So we sold the ducks and ducklings. boo hoo! We've done about nothing but talk about ducks and different kinds and how friendly they are so I know we will end up with them again at some point, but I sure miss them for now.
Christy
sorry, i would miss my ducks too. did you sell them or eat them?
We sold them, 4 grown females and 9 ducklings. A combination of Pekin and Ruen (sp?)
I think we all miss the waddle waddle walk they do. The geese are VERY different in the way they walk.
Christy
I just cant fence in my fishless fish pond. I have to much on my plate right now to even think about ducks yet. Maybe next spring.
Probably a good move Tia......you don't want to get too much going too fast or the results could be really awful. You'll have to remind us when it gets closer to spring that you are ready for ducklings.......I'm thinking you will get endless help with what kind and how many.....can anyone say enabler? Ahem, I mean.....helpful? lol Ducklings and ducks really are wonderful little animals and I'm sure you love them when you are ready for them. : )
Christy
Oh yes i will. I will have to take a pic of the fishless pond, have to wait untill I can mow and weedeat, maybe this evening, its to wet right now.
I know, I have to wait until next Spring before I can get my guineas. I can't wait though and have decided to fix up this old camper out here and make it into my guinea condo : )
What a cool idea Patch! We had an old camper that my DH tore apart and re used the windows in the barn and the metal siding in all kinds of ways. Not exactly the same thing you are talking about, but camper related anyway. How cool is it to reuse something you are not using? Just a heads up though........before my DH broke down the camper we used to have a horrible problem with mice and coons getting into ours. Is there a good way to block off all the ways they could get in?
Christy
Thanks : ) Although not the prettiest, I do try and reuse things for building around here. Saves on money and recycles. As far as protection, the camper needs a door and the top has a little square of opening I'm guessing from some old vent or something that has long since been torn off. I'll put another door on and maybe nail wood or something to go up on top. There is a giant window in the front that is missing, but I'm thinking of using that as their door and building a ramp up to it. There is another window inside that's missing think I'll just throw some chicken wire across that though. I'm also covering this run unlike the chicken's and duck's because the guineas can fly and I want to control when they go out. I don't have issues with mice, and as far as coons go I suggest putting a light or a radio out to scare them off, it's worked with the chickens so far : )
or get some Buckeyes, they go nuts fo rkilling mice!
Just a warning on the raccoon, they eventually seem to get to where they could care less what is playing. Or who is outside, how close you are or even if you are yelling at them. The motion light doesn't even deter them anymore! Like kids? If nothing bad happens, assume it is noit a threat???
Gun shots didn't even phase them, until one caught some shrapnel. However, soon they were back again.....it maybe because we are so far away from city & they NEED food.....I chased one up to top of fir tree with a 20gauge years ago. I was not losing any more animals to some overgrown rodent!
Just thoughts, although they may not be as much of a pest (predator) in all areas......
Ya ever see chickens chasing a chicken that caught the mouse? Hilarious! Like they can eat the thing running around like that! LOLOL
oh, yeah, and with cats and kittens chasing too! cuaght that on video last year!
tf
LMAO That would be good. Get that on "funniest videos"......
You know how they shoot bears that get too comfortable around humans with bean bags? I guess it hurts a lot but isn't lethal? I wonder if that would work with coons?
