A Visit to LLilyfan's Lily Garden!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Last year I didn't get down to see Llilyfan's garden in bloom, so I was determined to see it this year.
Only took me 3 1/2 hours to get to it in lower Iowa.

And there she was surrounded by the beauty she has created....

I have planted L. cernum on several spots with a variety of stems left from weather, dog or bunny dMge. And I FINALLY get to see one bloom---in Sue's garden!

This shade border is thriving despite Sue's neighbor's tree butchering ways...

This brilliant lemon yellow LA caught my eye--poor Sue had to go digging for the tag.

Looking good!
Mine are just starting. Took a few to market yesterday. There are tons of buds on each stem, must be the wet & cool spring.

When were were at NALS 2 years ago, Sue & I ordered registered & seedling lilies from the Cockers. Here is a stunning example of the seedlings they sent Sue...

Wonderful! Wish you could have kept on driving a little farther west. :)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

And then she could have come back East to see me . . .

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

What nice visits you have had there Wanda. It's always wonderful to be inspired by other gardeners with the same flower lusts ;)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Beautiful gardens Sue! Thanks for the virtual tour Wanda.

I really should get even for that one shot. Poor backout has been beaten by wind and rain until it loos really ratty. The one I was digging for a tag turned out to be Aladdin's Sun.

Here is a better shot of that area..............

And this is an overview of the back where a goodly portion of the lilies compete with the weeds!

Alas, the barn belongs to the neighbor on the east.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ratz.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just a question.
I'm too lazy to run back thru the threads I read this AM to find one post that named a Lily bulb store the sold lots of different varieties and unusual bulbs.
Anyone have a favorite place besides B&D"s/ I already order from them.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Wanda and Llilyfan, finally can put a name to that martagon you recd. from me.
It is Tsingtauence Martagon species.
Loved the pictures of Lliyfans gardens. Just gorgeous!

Wow Maxine!!!!! What a wonderful stand of marties! I have tentatively ID'd this lily as Nepera. It is the result of Terrace City Hybrid x L.tsingtauense.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Hmmm. It doesn't look at all like my L. tsingtaugense blooms nearby.

This group of lilies caught my eyes too...

This shot is to illustrate how well LAs thrive and multiply. Sue says this was 25 plants to start with....

Sue's gardens are heavenly at this time of year--she really knows how to grow lillium!

Wish she lived closer,I need a handy source for advise.
How does she deal with the dreaded Lily Beetle.
We have it here and It's ravaging lilies from everywhere.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

ge1836, Thank you for the compliments, but I really don't have a garden plan yet. Most of the lilies are just in rows, to see how they grow, if they are true to name and color, and to keep an eye out for virused lilies. Seems more and more lilies have virus when they arrive at our gardens. If they pass the tests then I plan to introduce them to my beds.

I am in the process of converting the rowed area into a garden, I think it might take up to 10 years and by then I'll be too old to do the upkeep! LOL

We don't have the dreaded lily beetle in our area yet. By the time it gets here I hope there is a good way to contorl it. I hope to learn from all of your experiences on the east side of the country.
