Hakuro Nishiki Willow Grafted Tree???

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I'm looking for a nice medium to small tree for my front yard I was thinking along the lines of a Service Berry something with spring flowers and fall interest. Well while I was out at the nursery they had these Nakuro Nishiki Willow Grafted Trees. They were very pretty and interesting so I started to look them up and all I'm finding are the bushes. No mention of grafted trees. I'm not sure what tree stock it's grafted on (have to ask about that) but I guess that they grafted a bush on to tree stock??? Is anyone familiar with this?

Yep, typically grafted on the trunk of an ordinary willow tree.

Looks nice when very young and small but soon grows into a huge untidy mess.

And the willow it's grafted onto probably has invasive roots like most willows, not the best choice for a small front yard since you probably won't be able to place it far enough from the house to keep the roots away from your foundation, water pipes, etc.

No No No No! Had one. Chain sawed same - with glee. At best it looks like a massive shrub stuck on top of a pole. It looks pretty for about 5 minutes in the spring. It laughs at the pruners. It can produce 12 ft whips in less than half a growing season from a hard prune. You can prune it any time of the year and you will have to. The photo (taken when a storm was approaching) shows the growth response to a hard spring pruning. It was sold as 8' x 8' on the tag. Mine didn't make it four years when it achieved 12ft with no signs of stopping.

Thank you everyone, sure did look pretty at the nursery and the man told me it wouldn't get much bigger. Said the top wouldn't get more than about 5-6ft round. Not to mention the $100.00 price tag. Think I'll pass on this one and go back to looking for what I wanted originally. My yard isn't that small but I want to cut out a huge Forsythia Bush that is planted just off the corner of my house and replace it with a nice small to med tree. I'd like to get a little shade from it but mostly I'd love some bright fall berries, orange or red and some spring color. That's why I was looking at the Service Berries, I thought they might be what I was looking for. I had been talking to a woman at a different nursery about a Hawthorn Tree that sounded pretty good. Flowers, berries and pretty bark right up until we started looking at the size, the tag said something like 25ft but she said more like 40ft.

Have you thought of a crabapple? There are some very nice new cultivars that will stay within the size you are thinking of. There is spring color and fall berries. The birds love them so there is no fruit mess. Check out the PlantFiles. There are so many good ones that I don't have a favorite to recommend. My very favorite is smaller than you want Malus sargentii 'Tina'.
