Last winter I posted a picture of my pond after one of many storms we had last winter. Some people doubted that there really was a pond under all that snow. They said they wanted to see ot this summerand since summer is finally here in the frozen north I post a picture.JOY
summer in the frozen north
Ahhh summer! Nice photos! Nice pond!
Nice pond-what is that leafy plant boardering your pond? Very Interesting!
That's beautiful. Please tell us about the plants.
Thank you so much for the pix! I am glad to see that summer has arrived for you. I am sure you certainly can use the green after dealing with so much cold weather. Yes please tell us what is bordering the pond and where I could get some. Inquiring minds want to know! :^)
As a fellow zone 4-er who gets lots of snow, I believe you! You have to remember what you have planted where so if you ever have to venture out into the snow, you don't step on anything underneath :)
the plant around the pond reminds me of scented geranium that my neighbor has.
My question is:
Is there really a pond under all those PLANTS?!?
I'd say you REALLY have summer!
Potagere
First let me say there is a pond under all those plant. They have flourished with the fertilizer supplied when the pond is cleaned out in the spring. The plant around th pond isperenial geranium..big root I think there is a taller one with flower that are almost black called mourning widow,I wouldn't recommend her as she likes ro spreriad her gloom all over the garden. There id Hosta 2 kinds,Ligularia dentaalso another black root or something, turtlehead, verbena.Fallopia japonica,a port merion .The bee balmand few lilies which arn't up yet The geranium is is invasive but very easy to control.Iy makes a great groundcver.I usually thin it out after it blooms and plant the thinnings around the yard where I don/t mow and want to keep the weeds down. There is a blue variety which blooms all summer but doesn't spread. I had the pond built 9 years ago a present for my 70th bithday.I keep a heater in the pond to keep my fish alive. This year they were just a good meal fir the racoon. My waterlilies overwinter in the pond too JOY
Well, that's a real mass of plants! I have a blue-flowering hardy geranium near my ponds that blooms all summer: "Geranium Clarkei 'Kashmir'". While it's true that it does not "spread", in it's 2nd year it's nearly 4 feet in diameter. It completely covers the bare space you can see in the foreground of this photo. I hope it doesn't take over the ponds!

Very nice, Joy, thanks for sharing!
lovely lily portage.I haven't had more than one bloom on each lily but have heard on a forum that they need heavy fertilization. I did just that and have huge leaves but no bloom yet. Our weather is very cool this year so I hope some eat in July will produce some flowers. My daughter in law and son have visited France and were so impressed withe the walled gardens..
I need to get out and get a new photo. This lilly is now 2 years old and is sporting 5 or 6 blooms a day. It always starts VERY early -- in April or early May --- and blooms until the Autumn frosts. It really is a superb variety! And the only fertilizer it gets is fish manure! Potagere
Very nice, Posy!
Love all the pond pics... beautiful:)
I would like to post some pics of mine but I'm working on plumbing and there are pipes and filters in weird places as a temp fix till I get everything sorted out. Any suggestions on how to hide all the utility stuff? I don't have any mature trees or anything and everything is just out there.
Hard to say how to hide what we don't see, evesta!
Send us a current pic and maybe someone will have some ideas!
That must be why I had such a strong feeling for your Garden Joy☺ I love the idea of a back yard that is like a tropical rain forest♥ it is sooooooo ZEN☺
I have made our back yard seem like the deep woods,um some folks who like a more manicured look say it looks like "a jungle", Humph! I was insulted☻since I spend so much time trying to make the yard look that way☺
posey... your pond is beautiful! Don't let anyone offend you... we know how much work it takes to make a haven. BTW, a jungle is quite beautiful, don't you think?
Brenda
Someone thought that was a 'jungle'?? Crazy! It looks great to me!
Thank you Evie. I must say I was taken aback and then when another person later that week said it again, well, I thought maybe I just didn't realize that it looked too
wild and overgrown. They were both men and I think they both like a very manicured look. I did cut back a beautiful Bleeding Heart Bush that was huge and sprawling, but I liked it better the way it grew on its own. I should have taken a before and after pic and posted it here to see what DGers thought. Next time I think I should cut things back I will do that. Of course, since I prefer the natural look, I probably won't ever prune again☺
The most beautiful garden is the garden you have. It has to be what pleases you, not what may or may not please others. So, for heaven's sake don't change your gardening style to suit someone else. My personal gardening style is best described as "full but manicured". Why do I like yours so much? There is often more beauty in allowing the plants to just "be".
You prove that.
Posy I'm sure you must know the cure for tigers in your garden. You must grow leopards bane.It works for tigers too.Cleans them out early in the garden season. JOY
Joy, I am NOT going to tell my 4 tigers that you said that!
Potagere
HaHa Joy☺ Well if I ever decide to get rid of that tiger, I will remember your solution but it is highly unlikely because I tried to take my tiger to a shelter 5 or 6 years ago when he found his way here as a young kitten on a cold January day, half dead from hypothermia. There was no room at the shelter and I tried and tried to find the owner, advertised in the local paper,no response, soooooooo here he is "Stretch" the tiger living the high life at our house, eating Fancy Feast and cat treats.
Potagere, wow, 4 French Tigers living with you. I will not tell a soul about the leopards bane☺
Joy,
Willow is very nice! I must admit, Posy, that I was using "tigers" as rather a generic! And not a one of them is French These are my 4: clockwise from upper left: Bella, we think she's a Turkish; found in a dumpster in Skopje, Macedonia; she's the 'alpha' cat. Misha (also known as "Pie", short for "Sweetie Pie"), purchased in a market in Dushanbe, Tajikistan for about 3 cents US. Katy, the only "tiger", she has MS and epilepsy, but tries to do everything the others do, anyway! Found bleeding on our doorstep in Skopje, Macedonia. Mei-Mei, aka "The Princess" or "Khunying Mei-Mei", a purebred, purchased from breeders in Chiangmai, Thailand, she's the oldest at 14, about the same age we think Misha is.
Happy Belated 4th!

I love all your cats but I must admit I have a soft spot for siamese.I've had them for nearly50 years.I always had pairs and they loved each oother or on of my family. willow is the first to bond to me.But to get back to the subject of water gardens..My first waterlily bloomed today.I've been trying to show it but keep losing th whole message. This is my third try JOY
Oh, my! That one is nice! Do you know its name? I have another that blooms later than the Gloriosa that is just now forming buds. Hope it blooms next week.
Siamese ARE "different". My great uncle had a magnificent male Siamese that would let no one but him get near it. My great aunt had to put it down after my uncle died because it would not take food from here, but attacked her. Mei-Mei is "supposed to be my wife's cat, but she likes to hang around me. Misha has spent half her life sitting on my lap or walking across my keyboard as I earned her food editing books and journal articles. Once, to show her displeasure at being left alone for a weekend, she urinated on my laptop and fried the motherboard!! (She's still my favorite!)
Gloriosa in multiple bloom:
Potagere
Oh my your gloriosa is outstanding,I don't know the names of my two lilies I just remember they are hardy. Siamese can show their displeasure. At the moment willow is annoyed at me Hu had a nasty abcess on his back which required two trips to the vet in that awful catcarrier in one of those horrible cars. Then I have to give him a pill in the am and pm.He avoids me but hunger gets the best of him and I can atch him.He is feeling much better.JOY
Ah, but He is most handsome!
