My pandurata is leaping this yr. It has climbed to the top of the chain link and working
it's way along the top of the fence. I can't download a pic due to my missing software.
It has stems coming out of the leaf axils with a nubby on the end. Oh please let it be buds. lol
Maybe I just need to buy a disposable camera today.
Pandurata
Thanks Joseph. At the rate my other glories are setting buds, I probably will have blooms on the pandurata first. lol I've got a pic of it on my camera, but can't
upload to the computer. Can only send pics already on the computer
If this one actually blooms this season, will just be a wonderful high point
for me.
Add a Little Bloom Booster
Thanks Paul. I will try that next. I used an all-purpose last 2 waterings.
Lets see what the bloom booster will do.
Hi Jackie . . .
I could be wrong, but since the I. pandurata is a native plant, I'm not so sure you should be feeding it anything. I never feed mine. They just started blooming a couple of weeks ago and are about to break out in FULL BLOOM. The vines this year are much longer than last year too.
Anyways, someone else may offer some better suggestions, but I don't think you should baby this particular plant too much. Just let it go on its own and it will be blooming before you know it.
Here are a couple of my first blooms.
Emma
Emma, your blooms are beautiful. The only reason I thought I might need to feed it is that it looks rather small, lvs and the entire vine. It looks healthy, nice and green, and lots of growth this season. The only thing is all the new stem sprouts look tiny to me. Maybe I should have just applied the granules, time release,
early in the growing season, just a small amount. My vine is only two yrs old but this is the third growing season. Maybe not quite old enough to bloom yet.
How old were your vines when they started producing blooms?
Thanks Jackie,
My vines were mature with HUGE Tubers when Jerry dug them up for me. The first year they were still settling down and did bloom quite a bit, but this year the vines are very long and they are ready to break out in full bloom. Now, I need to let them have that entire corner area where they were planted.
You are probably right since your plant is still young that you may not get a lot of blooms until next year. Also, they should do great for you in your zone.
Emma
Paul, I love your Merrimea tuberosa. Just as pretty as ochracea.
I meant to start one this yr but started so many others, I completely forgot about tuberosa. I found a few extra seeds of this one, I may still try one in the ground.
Emma, I didn't even know what it was when I found it blooming in a wooded lot.
I returned 3 weeks after I first found the blooms and gathered a few seeds.
it's a good thing I did, a couple of days later, they had cleared the lot with a back hoe and everything was destroyed, above ground anyway.
Anyone that I shared seeds of this vine with needs to plant them. I gathered the
seeds in 2000. I don't know how long they will be viable.
Jackie,
Too bad you didn't try to get the actual plants. You have to dig DEEP, but the effort is worth it. The Tubers we dug up were at least 4' or more deep.
Emma
Emma, I guess that's the reason growth was so slow the first two yrs,
it was busy growing a tuber. When it goes dormant this fall, I want to feel down in the soil and check out the size of the tuber.
Nice photo Jackie, looking forward to some flower pictures!
What a great looking vine ya got growing on your chain link fence! Perfect place for it to ramble along! ;-)
Thanks everyone. I noticed something this afternoon. On the oldest clusters,
the two smaller buds have almost caught up in size to the largest bud. Maybe that's what
triggers them to finally open. You know I will send a pic first thing. LOL
YAY!!!
Lol Ron, Yay is right, double yay even :-)
Jackie, very NICE!!! good job there.
Thanks A, I love this one.
Jackie - Looking good! Well worth the wait! :-)
Thanks Becky.
Is your plant forming seedpods (?)
Joseph, It does not stay open all day. Once the sun hits it about 11 am, it
starts closing. Cloudy days might find it blooming longer.
Ron, I think it will form seed pods. It was just too hot I think the last few
weeks, we had 4 days or more of 104-105, many days 100-102. Now the
temps have cooled and I'm hoping seed pods will form and hang on.
Then again, the temps might not have anything to do with it. Just speculation
on my part. Once the temps cool down for fall, the whole
plant just disappears. I'm hoping to harvest a few seed pods before
that happens.
Jackie it is so pretty!! How old is it?
Thanks Ronnie. It's 2 yrs old. I planted it in July of 06. It put out 4 or 5 lvs
that first yr. Last yr, it produced about 12 lvs. By the time I spotted it up
and growing this yr, it was halfway up the chain link.
Just beautiful Jackie!!
Wow! Look at all the buds on that baby!!! I would have to say that you will probably get lots and lots of seeds! :-) :-)
Thanks Melanie. Becky I hope you're right. Hoping I will get plenty of seeds
to share.
