Will try to send a pic. DH has deleted my Kodak software by mistake

What an ugly pic. I couldn't tell by looking at my thumbnail. It was a purple
looking Blue Star of India out of Japanese Imperialis Mixed

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I don't think it's ugly at all, patootie! I can picture it the way you wished it looked...lol.

Becky, what a difference from last year! Your vision turned out beautifully! I love the white picket fence and the white arbor. They really set off all your beautiful mgs. And the rest of the back yard is gorgeous. Makes me wish I had a house!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks so much Ladies! I used to hate my backyard. Now I want to live out there! LOL! The inside used to look pretty nice (before the hurricanes of 2004). We repaired everything, but I never re-hung paintings, photos, etc. on the inside walls. So it looks kinda dull inside. But the outside makes up for it. I kind of lost interest in fixing up the inside and instead refocused my energy to the great outdoors! LOL! I guess I get bored easily! LOL!

Here is what the backyard looks like today. Though I no longer like the 3-tiered bed in the middle of the Butterfly and Hummingbird Zen Garden. That is the sunniest spot in my entire yard and everything gets fried from the heat. So will be replacing that garden bed with a 2' high water garden. My dh and I are going to build a raise pond for that area instead. I have amazing luck with water plants especially water lilies and water Lotus. Next to MGs, I love water plants! So ... another vision I plan to implement soon! :-)

Judith - Do you have any yard at all where you live?

Jackie - Love that purple ... "Star of India"??? I don't see anything wrong with that photo. Lovely bloom! :-)

Thanks Judith and Becky. It was a very pretty bloom in person last summer

Patootie, Your flower is beautiful and not ugly at all! I love the nice white picotee on that one.

Thanks Karen.

I got this willow-dianthus JMG on ebay for big bucks, but it appears I will be getting the rare but sterile flowers, one plant out of 30 seeds. Here is the seedling showing the willow-like leaves.

Here is what the rest of the gang looks like. Quite different leaves at present time.

Joseph - Is it possible that it would be the following generation when you would see the willow leaves? Antoinette said something about that to me about another cultivar of seeds which I got from her.

Are the curled leaves part of that gene?

I am learning about this one, so I haven't answers. I was told the willow-leaf trait expressed itself low in frequency so you have to germinate many seeds to get a willow-leaf plant.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, if that is the case ... CONGRATS on getting one out of the bunch! I would also grow some of the others another generation to see if any more willow leafed vines are produced. You just never know about these vines! :-)

Being sterile, how does one go about reproducing them?

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

You'd better take good care of your one willow leaf!!! LOL

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi Joseph,

The willow leaf plant has the pollen but no pistil. You prematurely open the parent blooms and remove the pollen the evening before, tie them and in the morning you put the pollen from the willow dianthus flower on them to keep the mutant gene. This will increase your chances of getting more mutant plants.

This is one bloom pattern in my pot of flowers. Whatever they are NOID or what I love them just the same. They are for certain Large Flower Mix.

This is bloom pattern 2. There is a distinct ray and blizzard markings.

This is one more I got from Onalee and it is a kikyo mix. Now these work just like the mutant strains. You have to watch for pollen bearing flowers and tie or cover them to get true seeds. If the bees cross them with a different kind of flower they will look like a kikyo Not in the F1.

My Blue Asago willow leaf has the curled edges as does the cross that A
sent me, Blue Asago x Fujishibori.

All pretty blooms, Karen!

I had planted 2 seeds of Chachamaru at two different times and neither germinated. So I planted a Kohkan seed in their place (on the right side of the arbor). The Kohkan germinated and has been growing and blooming, though it is still a small vine. It was planted several weeks later than the other Kohkan seed on the left side of the arbor that has reached to the top of the trellis on the arbor.

Well, I walked out this morning and what bloom do I see???? CHACHAMARU!!! LOL! It took forever for this one to germinate and it is now starting to bloom. So it is growing along side of Kohkan! Too funny.

It got hot really quick this morning, so I didn't get a shot of the bloom in time before it started ... melting! LOL! Here it is in it's wilting state. Still a cute little bloom!

I saw that Karen featured a Kawaii bloom on the thread. I also have the Kawaii and probably some other mounding MG (Sunsmile?) growing together in a pot. I was using these blooms to cross on my NOID vine because it rarely produced pollen. This is a white Kawaii bloom. Not sure if there is a name for it?

There was also one in the pot that looked almost like a Kikyo. This was also a mounding/trailing MG.

That has been around a while too and is from the Carol series I think. From what I learned last year(if I learned it right lol!) is that the Kawaii has more narrowed solid green leaves and a sort of kikyo shaped bloom often with picotee white and the Sunsmile has broader leaves with variegation and very similar blooms to the kawaii.

Becky, That one blooming purple in front looks a lot like the same kind of Kawaii as Joseph`s he put in plant files. It`s very pretty.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

The others in the pot were something else (possibly Sunsmiles). The variegated leaves were really attractive, too. These were all growing together, so I never knew what to expect each day. I've been collecting seeds from this container, but have not separated them out by plant. So I don't know what is Kawaii and what is Sunsmiles.

Both the MGs in this container and the NOID vine seem to be expiring. Very few blooms now and when it does, they are miniature in size. Luckily, both containers have produced a nice amount of seeds to share. :-)

Here is a pretty shot of Kohkan today! It was loaded with blooms. These blooms dwarf the blooms of all the MGs near it. They literally just kind of billow out and flop over! The variegated leaves round this vine off very nicely!

Unfortunately, this one is only producing pollen in every 5th bloom. Not sure what that is all about. The big bumble bees have been beating me to the flowers every morning, so no telling if these are getting crossed with something else I have growing along the picket fence. Might get some interesting vines from any seeds it produces. :-)

This is a photo (taken yesterday) of the "younger" Kohkan growing on the other side of the arbor. It too is sending out branching vines and beginning to bloom like it's older sibling!

This is also where the Chachamaru bloom showed up today! :-)

Thanks for that tip, Karen, I shall give it a try.

Those look awesome, Nichole! Don't ya love those bloom flushes?! What have you got them growing on? They look like they are circling around somehow! Love those dark blue colors as they really catch your eye, even from a distance.

I have some I. purpurea coming up in the cracks of my outdoor patio. And apparently one of the birds or squirrels carried a seed over to a bed that is my Butterfly bushes bed. I saw it growing under there this afternoon. They are such hardy vines! They seem to be resistant to most predators and diseases. My kinda vine!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

These SOY seeds I had given to my mother to plant at her place (more plants for me!). She has them WAY overcrowded - they are twining around each other, I think. This bunch is in a 20" or so pot, sitting next to some chicken wire I had hung up for her. I drove up to her apartment and saw these just hanging over the pot . . . ooh'd and aah'd, then took a few pictures. I am SO glad they are doing well . . .

Mesilla Park, NM

I like your SOI Jackie.. you guys, I got some whitefly problems and used these... just wanted to let you all know about those sticky fly traps that I got last year from Wallyworld... they are clear, but I painted them bright yellow on the non-sticky side and within minutes there were hundreds of whiteflies on them..

I couldn't find the thread where I posted the photos, so I am posting one here.. hopefully it will help anyone that has this problem also.. they are really cheap and work..

Great flowers everyone...

Becky, sorry I haven't posted much, but want you to know that I lurk..lol most of the parents that were crossed in your crosses are all in the 2007 MG threads, but If you want to see any ... just dmail me and I'll post them,... don't make it here too much lately.

Gorgeous blooms Karen.

Becky, the Kohkan is an incredibly beautiful vine. Glad you finally got your Chachamaru

Nichole, Love the blues, especially the dark shades, just stunning.

A, thanks, wish you could drop by more. Missing your posts and beautiful blooms.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

A - Great idea for a trap for whitefly pests! Glad you are lurking just in case I need you to help me with any of the crosses you sent me! I am enjoying the current group of vines and can't wait to grow out the next group of MG crosses from you!

This was just too pretty not to photograph and post for everyone to enjoy! This is one of Antoinette's crosses - Rabenda X President Bush taken this morning! :-)

Becky, you sure do have some pretty ones!

Pretoria, South Africa

Wow! Pretty enough to use on the front of a card...

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

That's an awesome shot Becky!!

Love the dark ones Nichole!!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, that's beautiful with the white fence as a background.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments. I agree with you Elsa! The blooms on that vine do look like a greeting card or something! :-)

I will be collecting seeds from all the vines I am growing, so make a list of what you may be interested in. Y'all know I love to share with everyone! Gotta spread the joy around to see these beauties blooming in real life! Pictures don't do the blooms justice, do they? :-)
