How long should a thread be before you start a new one?

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

When it the right time to start a new thread? I'm sure this question has been asked before but I couldn't find anything about it.

I'm sure someone who knows will speak up. :)

But it depends on what type of internet you use. I have high speed so never have a problem loading even the longest thread.

I know admin mentioned for game threads to start a fresh one once they'd reached 100 posts.

100 is a good number, but if the thread is very photo-intensive, your dialup readers will be grateful if you start one sooner than that ;o)

thanks

I think it also depends on how "alive" a thread is...if you've got a lot of recent posts and the thread is still going strong, it's probably considerate to start a new one. But if the conversation has died down a lot, or if it's a really old thread that someone resurrected and there have been a few posts but it probably won't continue for long, then there's really no point in starting a new one.

Ditto what Terry said.

In the Bird Warching forum where there are a good number of pics we try to keep the length to around 135. We also encourage folks to use a photo resizer so the pics aren't so big and hard to load.

pelletory, good idea. I wish there was a more pronounced suggestion somewhere that would recommend a photo size of 640 X 480 (possibly near the "upload photo" box?). That size seems to be the very best for viewing as well as quick downloading.

"Dial Up Shoe"? Was that Maxwell Smart? Hmmm. . . "Secret Agent Shoe"

Microsoft has an easy photo resizer. You just download it to your computer then when you go to "My Pictures " on your computer you just right hand click on the thumbnail photo and it brings up a menu and you chose "resize photo" and it gives you the option of small, medium and large. The medium is fine and uploads very quickly. The link isn't working right now for me to post, sorry.

TwinLakes/Arlene, Hah! "Would you believe...?" (Guess we're giving our age away referencing Maxwell!)

Pelletory, thanks for the info on the resizer. (I use Irfanview, another free program and very easy to use for resizing, adjusting colors, cropping, etc.)

I import my images with the free (and very easy to use, I did a brief tutorial thread here on DG) Google Picasa program, then do my resizing, cropping & adjusting there, exporting those edits to a separate Picasa Exports folder, leaving the originals fully intact (I take lots of pictures so my computer is filling up fast) Picasa doesn't have a labeling feature so I use Irfanview for that. I now have an original sized copy, an edited copy and in the same folder as the edited one, a labeled copy. I get contacted many times by people asking to use my images for various things so keeping an original is important to me.

Sorry, off topic from the original post. ^_^
