We've been lucky enough to have some rain in the past few days. It's been so dry for the past couple of months. Here's a picture I was lucky enough to capture on Tuesday after the storm.
Container Renovations 3! (smile)
No, but I did answer an email from a Nigerian widow that wants me to help her transfer funds to the U.S.A. in exchange for millions... I thought that would give me enough of a start to at least buy nursery stock that might tempt you into becoming a customer.
Wow, that is a great rainbow double.
Hey Zany! Nigerian widows love container gardens too!
LOL yeah, maybe she'll kick in more of those millions if I promise her a partnership...
You know what Zany? I think we need a real Philanthropist and we'll tell him/her that it really means "a Lover if Plants". Yep that's it!
My favorite changes all the time, but one of my all-time favorites is Shocking Pink. I ordered it from RD and then actually found some at my local WM for $1.49 each. I was thrilled; went back twice and bought more.
I also like Chantilly, Heart, and Trailing Heart Dark which I ordered from RD this summer. You should come check out the Chatters thread on the coleus forum. Everyone posts pictures. of coleus they come across and buy.
Here's a link someone posted. I love this coleus and wish I could find it. It is called Indian Summer.

And we can have a Philanthropist get-to-know-each other party in the lizard lounge amongst the Philodendrum.
That is gorgeous Patty. That doesn't even look like Coleus! MY DAM_ED computer crashed last week!!!! When I can find them, I have this Chocolate brown coleus (I think it's coleus). It's quite nice.
Kat, gorgeous rainbow! Just lovely! Zany, I hate to tell you but I think I got the same offer...... In one day I got offers from three or four foreign countries!!!!
Amazing that anyone ever really believes them!!!!!
Garden is going fine. My latest is the white ginger is in bloom and it is just heavenly! Kind of similar to a gardenia!!! Truly wonderful!
Oh, I had some amaryllis seeds that germinated in the plastic bag that they were given to me in!!!! The sprouts were probably a good 1/2" long. They are now in potting soil doing wonderful!
Yeah, if those folks were for real we'd all be rich. But KatG may be onto something... lets pick a date and have all those plant loving philanthropists meet us and bring their checkbooks. I'll even spring for a case of bic pens for them to sign them with.
Texasgal, I am impressed, I didn't know amaryllis even had seeds much less that they would sprout and grow like that. I thought you had to wait for them to multiply from bulbs. I keep hanging out on DG and I will learn enough to manage that nursery by the time the checks are cleared.
WOW Jeanne! That's a lot of work and I give you a lot of credit for it! I've never seen White ginger...beautiful bloom! Amayllis from seed? II always thought you had to have a bulb. Amazing!
Zany...Would you help me plan the menu? I'm thinking that the philanthropists might like something in philo dough. This is going to be a real GALA!
Philo dough stuffed with king crab
Nestle Treasure Torte Dusted with Gold here's the recipe http://www.cooksrecipes.com/dessert/nestle_treasure_torte_dusted_with_gold_recipe.html
Yukon Gold potato salad
Royal Crown Cola
Caramel ed Golden delicious apples
Dollar biscuits
Ruby Grapefruit
Sapphire Martini's
Oh and how about a money tree for the centerpiece?
OMG Girlfriend! You're really serious about this menu! Don't you think we need a few more protein's though? And I love the Money tree as a centerpiece! I could combine them with some oxalis (false shamrocks).
OMG! What are we going to call this Dinner?
Zany...will you be flying in a couple of days in advance?
Of course, I wouldn't want you to get stuck with all the work! Now we need a name huh? Hmmm... something that will make them want to give of their vast wealth to our cause... In fact we need a name for our cause... like " Save the Lizard Lounge Nursery" Or "Philanthropists fot the advancement of growing things"
Kat, your rainbow photo looks surreal! Beautiful shot.
Hey, I get dibs on that widow's millions! I'll bet I got my letter from her first.
Mostly the bees pollenate the amaryllis, but you can too! Just take the pollen from one and dab it on the pads of another. Hopefully a seedpod will form. Wait for the seedpod to crack, and they are ready to be harvested. Let them dry out really well before bagging them. (If you don't let them dry out they will mold!) If you put them in 4" pots then you don't have to repot them for quite awhile. It's supposed to take four years to bloom tho. I have some that are two years old, so still have some time to wait.
The white ginger was gifted to me by another DG member, Randy (rjuddharrison).
He has a gorgeous garden in Houston. Check out his Garden Diary / Blog for pictures and many wonderful growing tips! Or see the Tropical Zone Gardening Forum thread "The Jungle is now in Session" for wonderful pictures!!!!
Your dinner sounds delightful Kat! LOVE crab!
Texasgal77, I'll have to try that next time I get one to bloom. I know it takes 4-6 years for Agapanthus to grow to blooming size but the bees did all the pollinating for me on them.
Really Zany??? Maybe that's why my Agapanthus doesn't do anything? Should I rub honey all over my bod and stand next to them?
That is absolutely GORGEOUS Jeanne! WOW!
That is one that my friend gave me! The seedlings should be similar to that one, but then again you never know. Most of hers are the one shown above. Someday we'll see! Thanks!
The only way I have had agapanthus bloom in the third year was to leave them in small pots so they became rootbound. Somehow the tighter the root wad the faster they bloom. The ones I left in small pots bloomed a full 2 years ahead of the ones planted in the ground and a year before the ones in large pots. And the ones planted in the ground in rocky soil formed masive roots and out bloomed the ones planted in rich composted beds. I think they like overcrowding and poor but fast draining soil better than the loam I had in the flower beds.
I planted some Agapanthus bulbs in my crappy soil last year...the foliage keeps appearing, but that's all! Bought a couple of plants off of Ebay this year and really didn't get to them but planted them in the "Leftover and I don't have a place for you pot". Yeah...they bloomed like crazy! Can you believe that?
I'm really starting to learn a lot about my plants. They don't ask for much, they just want water. It seem's the more I neglect my orchids, the better they do!
Yep, the ones in the soil need longer to mat up their roots to flower but the ones in the pots started getting root bound and bloomed. They are ghetto minded plants and like overcrowding to make them want to reproduce seed for some reason. LOL "This place is so crowded I think it's time to make a bunch of babies" mentality.
Bivbiv...Yes that really does look surreal. What is wierd about that photo is that it was not enhanced, that sky was just a weird color. That to me is like a scary "tornado" sky. Luckilly it passed. Here's another pic I took just before that one. I have to say that I love Storms (but not hurricane storms thoughj)
Hahahaha...You are too much Zany! Ghetto minded? hahaha
Okay Zany...I'm having a big talk with my ghetto dwellers tomorrow!
No wonder mine do OK. They never get repotted!

I moved this guy to the shade and he's doing pretty good. However, there's a gerber daisy in there and no matter what I do, they just never want to survive for me...
The Caladium is kind of cool though...very tiny leaves and not a big producer. But, they come out bright Chartreuse and later fade to Yellow. Unusual color for Caladiums.
Wow what a pretty caladium that is. I also want to thank you for tellling me where to get the other caladiums from. They are just now starting to come up for me, but they are looking fantastic. Thanks Tina
