Blytheville, AR(Zone 7a)

Kat, I sure am enjoying all your beautiful plants and pots but I don't know about Chinese Perfume Plant. Could you take a pic of it for us and what kind of fragrance does it have? Thanks, Laverne

2vernes: Here's a closeup of the chinese perfume plant - It's not much to look at as it's kind of a boxwood type and the blooms are very insignificant. It grows nicely though and keeps a nice shape. The scent is incredible though and it's mostly during the day - Kind of citrus, but maybe more like orange blossoms. I really love the plant and it sure doesn't ask for much..

Onewish! They are too much! haha. Your Wily reminds me of Ziggy - he's got to be so close! No wonder I don't sleep at night! Zara, she's more independent! Ziggy is totally a Mama's boy! Poor Zara got her foot caught in the door the other day. She's so quick and I was trying to keep her in and accidently closed the door on her. I felt so bad, but luckily it was just her toes. She limped around for a couple of days and is now putting her weight on it (all 4.5 lbs). I think she's figured out that she gets some really good sympathy with the foot and sits in front of me with her little paw up...but forgets about it if she runs to the door! hahaha. They really are something else!

Not a good picture but I'm now into head replacement! hahaha

I gave my Dear Man's Mother a head for her Birthday about 3 months ago...she's 88 and just loved it. It's the conversation piece of her assisted living facility! LOL It was planted with Bacopa and Oyster plant, but is really declining. My Bacopa is doing the same right now as it's just too hot. My poor lovely Bacopa head also has a very serious brown root problem right now and needs replacing!

Dear Man is going down to Naples tomorrow to visit his Mom and I planted a new one for her and we'll just switch it out! (there's many day's that I feel like I need my head replaced, but it's not as easy as this! hehe)

I used a little more hearty plants for her this time - Creeping Jenny and Brazilian Hot somethings? Added a little succelent on top also which will probably take over. Cute combo.

aaaawwww....sorry to hear about the little footie..... I have to watch Jily with that when I come home from work.... for some reason she always gets close to the door when I walk in and close it

Lily is in heat and i had the pleasure of her trying to get off her diaper 45 mins before the alarm went off... glad i went to bed early just to be woken up early

:)

love the heads.... they are way too cool

I don't know if a wreath form is a container or not, but here is what I planted up on Monday.

Cool wreath; I had a friend who used to make those.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Very clever idea building the wreath around the umbrella stand. I love those ants!

Janet

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Where's the ants??? Am I missing something? Do I see Janet getting creative thoughts in her mind seeing this project????

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Thats adorable mattsmom! Great idea. Are those Ant candleholders? hahaha

Tomah, WI

Thanks everyone, Yep they are some old patio candlesticks.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Patty, one has strawberries and the other has watermelon. and you just THOUGHT I'd lost my mind! HAHAHAHAHA Yeah, I know... you KNOW I have!

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay I saw the one with the strawberries and now I see the one under the watermelon. Brain fart. . . . . it must be the heat.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm always looking for the unusual Patty. That's how I spotted them both so swiftly. That wreath is wonderful. I think I have a frame for one of those. I got the moss yesterday so I need to get my butt out there and make one... ust as soon as it cools down out there!

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

I figured that creation would be right up your alley. You are so creative!!! Be sure to post a picture.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Mattsmom and Janet:

Do you just put moss on these frames and stick the plants in? I suppose with succelents it would really do well, wouldn't it? I have the cutest flamingo frame that's just sitting there waiting for something!

Kat

Tomah, WI

Kat-you can line them with moss fill with soil, or just fill with moss.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I wonder if the plants would stay more moist if perlite was inserted between the layers of moss and then the plants inserted into the perlite.

Tomah, WI

I use unmilled spaghnum moss. That stays very moist. Once they are rooted, I will back off on the water.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

OMG...I'm doing this! Your's looks so cute MM!

My Flamingo is upright, but maybe there's a way of adding some soil in there also.

Not a good pix, but here is the bicycle planter my DH got me for our anniversary on Valentines day.

Kat- you are so talented, I'm sure you will figure it out & it will be darling!

Here is my front porch tonite. Hope you can see some of the planters.

Kat,

I've got an Ostrich Topiary that my sister Connie and I made. We created the basket so that we could line it with moist moss on the sides and fill the center with soil.

Connie has made several topiaries and sometimes has to wrap the moss with fishing line to keep it in, like on legs, etc.

The key to getting the moss to stay in though is to fill a bucket with water and then submerge it for a few minutes until it soaks up the water. Wring it out and then start pressing it to the wires.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Janet! You guys are TOO MUCH!!! I LOVE the Ostrich! That is just unbelievable! I love the expression!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

And Mattsmom!!! Another very clever Lady! That porch of yours is to die for! I love the way you've wrapped (grapevines?) the vines with lights and your flowers are gorgeous! LOVE your bike planter too - Your Hubby has good taste! Good for you!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

You both have gotten me so excited I had to go out to the dark, snakey, lizard lounge and retrieve the Flamingo Frame! haha. Friends gave me this a couple of years ago and it was full of roses stuck into the moss. Since then, I've really never had any plans for it...UNTIL NOW! LOL! You may have both created a monster!

I've seen some great topiary frames - especially a lion planted with some kind of grass around his mane...just never knew how to do it.

What do you think I should plant in this one? There's old moss in it...should I just add to it or remove it completely?

Thumbnail by KatG
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

We were really proud of that ostrich. Connie had made one for herself and I just had to have one too!

How old is the moss? As long as it's not moldy, I think it'll be just fine.

BUT, if you want to put soil in it, then you might want to replace it, unless there is already soil in there. I buy Sphagnum Moss by the bale from a landscaping place/nursery and keep it in a big Sterlite container. I like putting that moss on the tops of my container plants to hide any "naked" soil. It also helps to keep the plants moist longer.

Kat, seeing the caladiums on the table there, and seeing as how this IS a flamingo, I think those would make awesome wings for your bird. Especially those Thai Beauty caladiums. Something low growing on his neck and legs. Some kind of ground cover.

Tomah, WI

Like Unique said, soak him down first. Then you can plant him easily.

Unique-lovin' the creativity you & your sis have. He is sooo cute.

Kat-my mother, my grandsons & I went to a farm & cut those grapevines ourselves. We had alot of fun making the garland. Love the flamingo!

This is my moss lady I made from chicken wire (those frames are so expensive) & moss. No soil at all.

Thanks for the nice words everyone.

Thanks Mattsmom for your kind words. Connie and I have a lot of fun in our gardens. We're always looking at things differently than most folks do.

WOW That moss lady is wonderful! Now That's creative!!

I've got a big cat wine bottle holder that I started a topiary on last year. Never did get it finished. I think I may work on that and maybe try out some coleus in it to make a "calico" cat! :-)

Janet

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Kat what about coleus in pinks like Pink Chaos which is more of a mounding coleus not an upright or Strawberry Drop which is a trailing coleus. You always find such cool plants for your combos; stuff that I've never seen or heard of. I'm sure you'll find some interesting things for this. I think I would maybe look for things in pinks.

Patty

mattsmom, your porch is beautiful! Very welcoming. Is that Presiden Bush sitting in your livingroom?

Tomah, WI

Actually, that is Tom Colicchio from Top Chef.

Thanks for the nice words-Staceysmom

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I got the cat stuffed today, but not yet planted. Was planning on planting it up this evening, but then it rained and we went out to eat and now I'm too stuffed to get out there and get eaten alive by mosquitoes.

i am not a cat lover... but that's pretty cool

do you do yorkies?

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

HAHAHA Thanks! I haven't had cats in about 7 years. I found that cat wine bottle holder at Goodwill for $2.99. Connie had already made a couple of Topiaries, and I decided he'd be a cool frame for one. She helped me stuff the tail last year and then I brought him home to complete. In the meantime, hubby moved him behind some stuff and I forgot about him.

In answer to your question, if I found a Yorkie Wine Bottle Holder I could! HAHAHAHAHAHA I'm not the one that "molds" them into animals. Connie might be able to. The thing is that once you start covering it with moss, you tend to lose the facial characteristics. That's why I decided NOT to stuff his face. I figured he'd lose his "cattiness".

Janet

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

BUT...... Drum roll please.
