Spring 2008 Wintersowing Seed Swap

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Now that the basic wintersowing season is over, most of us probably have left over seed. Would anyone be interested in a seed swap? I think the last swap was a success. If you are interested please let me know and I will add your name to the list below. I'll start the swap at 10 people.

SEED SWAP RULES

Let's make the swap 10 packets of seeds for those that don't have alot to share. ALL SEED ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED on or before July 4th. Based upon my experience with other swaps, I will not wait on late entries. If your seed is not in by the above date, I will just mail you back your own seed.

Use a bubble envelope or bubble wrap to send seeds to Anita [my address is in the exchange-Anitabryk2] **This swap is open to paid members only**

Here are the postage rates as of today from the USPS. http://www.usps.com/prices/first-class-mail-prices.htm WHAT EVER IT COST YOU TO SHIP YOUR PACKAGE TO ME SHOULD BE THE AMOUNT OF POSTAGE INCLUDED IN YOUR ENVELOPE FOR RETURN BACK TO YOU
_____________________________________________________________________________________

☼ Include 10 different packets of seed; - no more / no less - please

☼The amount of seed is whatever you feel comfortable with. If you are looking for guidelines, see the Seed Trading Primer in Extras; [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

☼Seed must be dried - NO FRESH SEED - IT ARRIVES MOLDY

☼You can use anything for seed packs, but make sure they won't fall out and tape is not in a location where seeds could stick. The glycine envelopes work best for tiny seeds as opposed to plastic;

☼Identify each seed pack with the contents and include your DG name

☼Include a mailing label with your own address on it which I will use to mail the items back - so please make it big enough and legible enough for the postman to read.

☼Include enough postage based upon the above rates for me to return a package to you.

☼I will reuse the bubble envelope you send the seed packs in. Please make sure it is in good shape and will survive the round trip. I have found the 6x9 bubble envelopes work the best.

☼Write WS Swap on outside of the envelope sent to Anita.

Include a list of the seeds enclosed - please. It will make it a bit easier to make sure that everyone gets something different than what they sent.

Excellent!! I always look forward to the two swaps I run. I love to see what others are interested in swapping.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

I've never done a swap before, but would love to give it a try. Is there a list somewhere of what seeds work well for WS, and which don't? I have oodles of seeds left, but don't want to send stuff that doesn't work for WS.

This is exciting. . .Critter sent me a generous packet of seeds when I first joined DG, and I've been wanting to learn how to swap ever since! I read one too many posts on "Trades Gone Bad" (the DG version of Girls Gone Wild?), and it is a bit intimidating for a newbie! I read the trading primer, but have been to scared to try for fear I'd do something wrong! LOL

Also, can anyone give me a guesstimate of how many seeds is a standard amt? Getting that wrong is one of my insecurities. . . The only real "trade" I've done is with my mom, and she told me to only send her 3-5 of each seed, as she didn't have much room, and then she sent me about 50 in each pack. I felt like a heel. . .

Gonna go dig in my seed box. Could I post a list of potential seeds tomorrow, and someone could tell me if some of them are not good options, if there isn't a good place to look them up? Or does that ruin the surprise?

Angie - I wouldn't stress too much about it. Most annuals, except tropicals and perennials are fine. I tend to be a bit heavy handed when I swap, but it depends on how much you have. Just make sure you label the packet well. You are welcomed to list the ten you are thinking of swapping.

Anita

Anita~ count me in, I have tons of unused seeds and wintersowing has been good to me! Here's wintersown snapdragons..

Welcome!

Thanks Anita! Look forward to another seed swap adventure.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Most annuals, except tropicals and perennials are fine. Oh gosh when I seen this I was like OMG what did I get myself into. All I have are perennials. Glad I came back and read what it really said. I have been saving up (and asked family) all their "jugs". I have about 40 so far. This will be my virgin trip down winter sowing. I'm so excited. I just hate to do anything but enjoy the beauty in the heat. During the winter I NEED something to do, and this seems to be a great thing to try.
Thanks for the opportunity to try this out.

Anita, are you all full up with seed-traders? Because I'd love to join. I received some NEAT seeds on the last swap.
Thanks,

I should have asked if commercial packets of seeds are allowed. I have a few of my own saved seed but have a much bigger variety of purchased seed.

Quoting:
Most annuals, except tropicals and perennials are fine.

Did you mean perennials and annuals are fine, but no tropicals? Or did you mean annuals are OK, but no tropicals or perennials? I may have to bow out of this swap if we're not including perennials, as that makes up many of my seeds. Also, are we sticking to flowers and ornamentals, or are some veggies like tomatoes OK? I know some people do WS them, though I didn't try it.

Let me know! I've been sorting my box and drying seed that I've saved. . .

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

I think she may have meant that both annuals and perennials are fine, just no tropicals. Right Anita? I mean...I personally like perennials:-)
I am still considering joining 'cause it sounds like so much fun, but I'd better check the calendar and see if I have time to dig in the seed box. Such a jumble right now, lol!

Potentilla nepalansis "Helen Jane" - successfully winter-sowed
Rudbeckia fulgida - successfully winter-sowed
Mixed Sweet Peas (alas - I can germinate them - but can't seem to grow them here; they prefer alkaline soil)

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

I was hoping I read that right re: perennials! Thanks for the clarification.

I have an order from Thompson and Morgan arriving soon, so think I will wait to post my 10. Can't remember how many seeds were in each packet--some more than 100, some only about 15. Between what I have on hand and what I ordered, I should have a nice selection to send. I'll go ahead and get started on labeling packets & getting the BE ready, so I can pop them in quickly when my order arrives. Hope I'm not cutting it too close, but think it should arrive in the next few days.

Anita, loved your pictures of WS blossoms, and that leaf background was very pretty, too. Good information on your list--so often I am browsing sites and catalogs, wondering how different seeds would do with WS. I need to figure out how to post a database to my blog, so I can share my WS info, too. I just started the blog this week, so have lots of work to do, and pictures to add! Also need to add my info to the WS database here on DG. Not enough hours in the day, especially now that it finally stopped raining incessantly, and I'm trying to catch up to all the weeds that are growing like. . .well. . .weeds.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Love your list Michaela!!

No sweat Angie. Looking forward to your package.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Anita. LIke Michaela, I am awaiting a Park seed shipment, to supplement my saved seeds, and then I'll send my package along! I'll make sure it arrives by July 4th.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

My T & M seed order still has not arrived! Here are the seeds I have here on hand, that I plan to include. If my order arrives today, I may include some of those flower seeds instead of a few of these. Otherwise, it's back to the seed box to see what else I have enough of to send. Will try to get it out tomorrow or Monday at the latest, to be sure it gets to you well before July 4!

Dill Dukat
Cat Grass
Bell Pepper California Wonder 300
Celosia Fresh Look Red
Cucumber, Pearl
Sweet Pea "Bijou"
Tomato "Wayahead"
Four O'Clock, mixed colors
Oriental Poppy

Here is what I ordered from Thompson & Morgan. Just sent DS to the post office to see if it arrived today. Let me know if any of these are particularly good or bad for WSing, or if there is anything you'd particularly like, and I'll try to make that one of the swap items. The chocolate foxglove was a freebie, not one I chose, but looks interesting. Might be a nice contrast in with my burgundy & gold daylilies. . .

Iberis crenata
Amaranthus tricolor Joseph's Coat
Nigella damascena Oxford Blue
Dianthus barbatus nigrescens Sooty
Portulaca Sundial Peach
Viola x wittrockiana Silver Wings
Scabiosa atropurpurea Beaujolais Bonnets
Gaillardia pulchella Razzle Dazzle
Eschscholzia californica Appleblossom
Viola : Chalon Supreme Wildberry Mixed
Matthiola Starlight Scentsation
Viola x williamsii Velour Blue Bronze
Delphinium (Larkspur) ajacis The Seven Dwarfs
Verbena x hybrida Adonis Mango F1. Hybrid
Digitalis Milk Chocolate

Drat, DS got back, and *still* no seeds in today's mail! I guess this is what I get for assuming they'd come promptly enough to include in the swap! Back to the seed box. I do have quite a few seeds that I ordered from Seeds 'n More earlier this spring; I'll have to see what I have enough left of to swap! Had a great ordering experience from them--highly recommend them!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I did get my seeds yesterday, but I did see on their site they are in the middle of inventory, hopefully they didnt forget you. Glad to see someone else going to send veggy seeds, I kinda feel guilty sending so much veggies but i have oodles. hope I wont get in trouble sending a few extra pkt's I do want to add flowers in also.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

L2G, when did you order? You give me hope that mine is coming soon. . . Really, it has not been an unreasonable amt. of time since I ordered, I would just really, really like to send mostly flowers, instead of so many veggies! I didn't see many people WSing veggies this last year, so want to be sure I'm sending things that are actually appropriate for WSing.

York, PA

I am hoping to receive veggie seeds in the swap as I don't really know which kinds are good ones to try. I'm glad to hear there will be a nice variety!

Joanne

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I deleted the email i recieved but it was right at about 6 days if I remember right. Even if you get it out in mail monday it should get to there.

My envelope is ready to be mailed out in the morning! Sending seeds of cleome-white blooms; Joe Pye weed, California poppy- white blooms; agastache 'Lavender anise hyssop' ; celosia 'Pink candles'; persicaria orientalis; horned rampion, plum granny, zinnias, and seeds from cimicifuga simplex 'Elstead' My list is also included in the package. Thanks Anita for organizing this swap. ;0)

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

looks good everyone. I always enjoy seeing what everyone sends. Keep in mind, I do this twice a year.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh, Garden6, those look fantastic. Anita, feel free to just drop her entire packet into my BE! LOL

I need to run up to the PO this morning before they close, and see if my darned order is there yet! DS has a T-ball game at 10:00, so I guess I could check on the way by. I get so impatient waiting for seeds and plants. I have to keep reminding myself that patience is the keystone of gardening. Some things you just can't rush, and the best things are worth waiting for!

LOL! ;0)

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

I have my BE all ready to mail. I put 10 seed packets in, but if my T & M order arrives tomorrow, I will probably remove a few and substitute seeds from my order. I have labels and packets all ready, and know which seeds I will put in, so should only take me a couple of minutes to finish if it does arrive. If not, all is ready to go into the mail on Monday. I don't want to wait any longer for the order, and miss out on the swap altogether! One way or another, it's going out Monday!

Here is what is currently included:

1. Cucumber, Pearl Hybrid
2. Catnip Nepeta cataria
3. Bell Pepper, California Wonder Capsicum annuum
4. Dill, Dukat anethum graveolens
5. Sweet Pea, Bijou lathyrus odoratus
6. Oriental Poppy, Papaver orientalis
7. Cat Grass, Avena sativa
8. Canadian Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis
9. Tomato, Wayahead, Lycopersicon lycopersicum
10. Four O’Clock, Marabilis jalapa

If the other order comes in, I will remove either the catnip or cat grass (or both? Don't know if any of you have cats. . .or dogs. My dog loves the cat grass.) and probably the Bell pepper, since I'm not sure they are actually suitable for WSing--think they prefer bottom heat to germinate. Unless, of course, someone really wants the peppers anyway, even if they don't WS them. . .

If my T&M order arrives, I will substitute in Nigella 'Oxford Blue,' Matthiola 'Starlight Scentsation,' and California Poppy 'Appleblossom.' They all look very appropriate for WSing, and are so lovely! I chose the Matthiola for my son Matthew, who loves scented flowers.

I'm trying to find flowers that incorporate each of my family names: Arthur, Edythe, Dave, Gwen, Lee, Matthew, Justin, and Angela. Thought that might be a fun theme garden. Probably ought to include the IL's John & Joanne, too, huh? Any suggestions?

Angie

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

OK, my T & M order arrived today, and my bubble envelope is on its way to NY! Let me know when it gets there, Anita! I went to the PO this morning, brought my seeds right home, and packed some right back up to send out, and went back to the PO. Poor postmistress was thinking she gave me the wrong package or something.

I think the postmistress was a little confused when I tried to explain that I needed the same amount of postage in stamps to put inside the envelope. I tried to explain it to her, but she finally just said, "Whatever. I'll take your word for it." Don't think she understood that I was including postage so you could send it back to me. Mine was 83 cents, pretty reasonable, I thought!

Thanks again for organizing this, and for making the directions so clear. Building confidence with everything I try here on DG!

Angie

York, PA

I just received my bubble envelope back in the mail this morning! It is shredded beyond belief and inside a plastic baggie looking thing. Only 4 of the seed packets are still there and it looks like they used my return address from inside the bubble envelope to send it back to me. I am so ticked off!!

I am sifting through my seed box as I write, trying to pick replacements for the lost seeds. I should be able to get them to you by Friday if I send them 2 day mail. Does anyone know if mail is delivered on the Fourth of July? If not, they won't get there until Saturday. Let me know what you would like me to do Anita. I don't want to hold up the trade but I certainly don't want to spend the money for overnight delivery.

Joanne

Edited to add: I'm going to run the seeds out to the the post office now and just hope for the best. If they arrive late then just send them back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they get there in time.

There will be no mail on Friday so my seeds will not arrive until Saturday. I'll certainly understand if you need to mail them back to me. Overnight was $16 and just too much to spend on 10 packets of seed.
