Friends,
Tonight I've learned that the members of Dave's Garden, led by Karma, have been planning a nice surprise gesture toward Trish and I.
This is thrilling, and we're overcome with happiness to know that the members here care about us and want to thank us with a tangible gift.
Our emotions, however, turned to disappointment when we learned that the members were wanting to help us with a gift of either money or hardware for the server.
Let me be clear: We don't need any money (or hardware) from the members. Even moreso, we are actually /incapable/ of accepting the same from you guys and gals. We do not have the ability to accept this kind of gift from ya'll.
To clear up confusion about the planned hardware upgrade of Dave's Garden: I'm trying to find a garden-related company to supply us with the hardware in exchange for a nice mention on our site. I am all to happy to make this kind of exchange with a gardening company. I am not at all happy to make this kind of exchange with our members.
Trish and I believe it is simply unacceptable for us to accept any kind of monetary gift. We lump into this purchased gifts like hardware.
Thank you, Karma, for the gesture and rallying all the members (I have no idea of the number, but I believe it's a lot) to the cause. It's a thrill and a privilige to serve this audience. But this is not the way I want to pay for the site, nor is it the way I want to obtain money to pay for our family's expenses.
This post is to officially let you guys know that we're appreciative beyond words of the gesture, but we are not able to accept a purchased gift or money from our members.
If you want to thank us for our work on Dave's Garden, there are exactly 3 things that you can do for us right now:
1. Send us plants and seeds. We've moved to a new farm this winter, and we're scrambling to gather seeds and plants for the place. We know that when you combine all the members here, just about every species of plant is represented. We want in on this action. :-) Plants, Plants, Seeds, and more Plants is what we would love to get. We also would like post cards so we can hang them on the wall.
2. Tell your friends about Dave's. Each and every member here is valuable to us, and makes the site better. Add stuff to the Plants Database, keep your seedlist up to date, allow newbies to get seeds from you by SASE (if you have excess seed), and, in general, keep with the spirit that DG was founded upon.
and finally
3. Start thinking about the future of Dave's Garden. Trish and I have been working together for several months now, planning for the day when we turn Dave's Garden into more than what it is. We believe that there is room for Dave's Garden to become a business, but not in the traditional sense. We want to money, but the problem is: Dave's Garden is a website that is "By Gardeners, for Gardeners". Since everybody has a hand in making DG what it is, everybody should have the opportunity to profit from any money-making opportunies that come about.
We're planning to open a store front where our members may sell anything that they like (but preferably in the gardening or crafting area). This will make everybody money. The more stuff that gets sold, the more everybody will win.
I won't go into details here, because Trish has already started a new thread with our plan. The thread is here:
http://davesgarden.com/showthread/dg/8625.html
In summary: if you really want to show your appreciation to us, we'd love nothing more than for you to help Dave's grow and start planning for the future storefront.
Thanks,
Dave
How to help Dave's Garden
Dave
I need your mailing address again. I was doing some house
cleaning and accidentally zapped your address.
Any seed in particular that you are looking for?
Bud
WELL SAID DAVE !!! You are a MAN of the Earth that I understand and respect !!! ROCK ON TO INFINITY !!!
Hey Dave and Trish: Could you guys post a list of the plants and seeds, that you want and need. Maybe on your page, or on a forum. As far as plants go, it will have to be when winter is over and the snow is gone, here in the north. We really do appreciate all that you have done for us. I check in here almost every day after work. Oh,the heck with it, after I get supper dishes done, I am usually here until it is time for bed. That is how much davesgarden means to alot of us. Debby
Dave, I'd love to send you some seeds!!! If you would, please include your address in the next newsletter so that we can surprise you and Trish with a little package. I have to echo Bud's question...are there any certain varieties of crops you'd like to have? :)

Dave, When I learned of Karma's plan I emailed a handful of folks at the Farm Forum and told them what was going on. I am so sorry. Can you forgive me? I guess I wanted to help but went about it the wrong way. I would love to send you some of my Iris' I have and a couple of other things. You guys are some of the nicest folks and we all appreciate the hard work you do for us. You & Trish sure have alot of integrity and that is so hard to find these days. Blessings to ya'll, Lisa
Hi all and thanks for the posts!
jmL: Please don't apologize! We really want everyone to know that we couldn't imagine a nicer gesture toward us! The thing is: we are rewarded enough simply by your presence and contributions to the site. We cannot in good faith accept any kind of monetary gift.
We do encourage seeds and plants (we'll get a list together!) and get our real reward when we see everyone enjoying the site! That's the best part of doing DG.
And, of course, maybe one day we'll all pay our mortgages selling stuff online. ;-)
Dave
Well Karma, it was a grand gesture! I, too, agree that this is a wonderful site, and so peaceful as gardening should be.
I'm still a newbie to the site; and a newbie to trading (just got started in the fall), but have to say I have "met" the nicest people here!
Dave and Trish, I will gladly send seeds and plants (when the snow is gone!); hmmmmmmmmmmmmm........do you have a pond? :)
Becky G.
Everyone at DG and especially Karma,
You all are such kind, loving, and sharing folks! I personally want to apologize for any inconvenience I have caused anyone. And Karma, you're the greatest! Thanks for all the great fun!
Now let the trading begin! And God Bless our new storefront!
Dave and Trish: Daylilies and iris are ready to ship, need an address! Trish do you want rose cuttings? All you have to do is stick them in the ground and they'll make it with water, 50% of the time, lol. I like those odds.
I've already promised all the roses I've rooted this winter or would send you some. Can send Brugs, yellow or pink.
Grits
Dave, & Trish, I would like to send some iris(DH's family's heirloom & others), daylilies, and many many other seeds and plants. I too need a surface mailing address.
This is one of the most wonderful gardener/gardening sites I have ever found on the internet. I appreciate it more than words can say. The people who come here are great. It's kind of taking a trip to heaven without even having to die.
May God's richest blessing be poured out on all of you, especially Dave and Trish.
Hi everyone. Thanks for all the E-mails!
Last night at midnight we were up talking about this stuff, and Trish has written up a post. Before we could send it, though, a car crashed in front of our house and knocked out our phone line!!!
Today the lines are scattered everywhere and our phone is offline. The phone company is making no promises that it will be fixed anytime soon! We might be offline for a week or more. :(
I brought my laptop up to my neighbor's house and logged in real quick to see how everything is going and stuff, and to post this that Trish wrote last night. Just an FYI - we'll be offline for a while and won't be able to get here and make any posts or read anything.
Trish's post follows after this.
Thanks again everybody!~
Dave
Hi Dave! You have my sympathy on this. A car went into our front garden a number of years ago, demolishing our gateposts and landing amongst the daffodils. The important thing is no-one's hurt. Hope this gets fixed soon. Good luck!
Dave and Trish - I'm sure you know that I don't have a garden yet until I move into our house and then perhaps not for at least a year, but that does not mean that I cannot contribute. Please mail me and tell me what are your favourite things. Thankyou for being the people that you are. God bless.
