Tags process is timing out

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

The long delay when adding tags is making this feature very difficult to use :~(

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I agree. Lots of times when I try to tag something my computer freezes up and I have to do a hard shut down.

Dave, is there some way to remedy this? The old 'favorites' worked so much better.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm afraid I agree. I love the tags but it is so slow that it renders them useless.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Favorites preferred.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Favorites preferred here too.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think the "tags" feature has wonderful possibilities, but I agree that the time it takes to try to tag a page is making it difficult to add tags. After several tries, I often give up. And I have a reasonably fast cable connection.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

What a relief--I thought my computer had a virus! I tried to add a tag, and my computer froze up, too, and I had to restart. I tried three times, same result.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

No, it is not our computers. I had the same problem on both computers at home on cable and on ATT high speed and on the computer at work. The delay is here as the program searches and loads all the tags now in use. It bogs down to a crawl and sometimes freezes.

I am relieved to see that I am not alone. In fact, I posted about this problem on the computer forum and was surprised when I only got one reply.

I have the same problem. I really like the tags, but would like the option to just create and use my own. The thing with favorites is, there's no sorting ability.

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

Is this a recent development? I've not had this problem, but then I've not used tagging for several weeks either.

It's very, very slow, though I like the feature it has to offer! Can the bugs be worked out? It's taking so long to tag any item. I avoid tagging some of my most favorites that I would have tagged otherwise.

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

I just went in and tagged a thread to see if I would have the same problem. Nope, it tagged fine and only took about two seconds. Are you all using a dial-up connection?

I prefer the tags because then I can put in my own title which is easier for me to find the info again and also remember why I saved it.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm on high-speed.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I also have trouble with the tags....I love using them, but it is so slow.

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

Hmmm, if you're not using a dial-up connection, then it must be something else. I can't imagine what the difference could be as I'm just not having the problem at all. The tags save immediately for me.

I just tried to tag this thread - this is the screen I saw for almost 1 minute. Then when the tag screen finally came up and I tried to type in the name for the tag it only showed the first keystroke for about 15 seconds or so before the following keystrokes showed up. It does this every time.

I managed to tag a couple of threads yesterday in a few minutes but sometimes it takes up to 3 minutes for it to work. I have DSL and it just doesn't seem to matter when it comes to tagging.

Edited to add: 9:20 a.m. Sunday it seems much faster with minimal delay. Slower traffic?

It's not a question then of internet speed. Cable and DSL are both faster connections than mine. I have satellite internet, which is high speed, but still slower than cable and DSL.

Also, it's not the browser either. I'm using Mozilla, but so are others, too.

Karen

this is what I got immediately:

I have DSL and it acts the same with Seamonkey, Firefox, and IE.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I just tried again and it took 24 seconds for it to come up where I could type in a tag for this thread. That is a lot faster than it was a few nights ago when it timed out after 3 minutes and then when I went back it took 90 seconds but let me tag. I am guessing that the more people using the server the slower it is. Sunday afternoons are aparently not too busy while weekday evenings are.

But for a site that loads pages in nano seconds a minute to 3 minutes is out there!

I guess we should have told y'all that tagging is meant to be a leisurely activity; hence the deliberate delays, which give you time to go grab a cup of coffee or tea or whatever while you wait (tongue firmly in cheek!)

Seriously - I asked Dave about the slowness on tagging, and he said he had some ideas to make it zippier. Stay tuned ;o)

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, Terry! Thanks!

I'm going to get a cuppa while I tag this thread! :-)

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Terry, I was starting to think no one in management was reading any of this. Guess I'll fix a pot of Java and wait it out.

I tried the tagging thing for the first time to day and I have ADSL running at 1.5 mbps I too find it very slow. Most pages on DG come up without noticeable time lags, but the tagging page is taking several seconds for me, as do any threads in the forums which exceed about 150 posts. Why is it necessary to pull up the whole existing list of tags before you can start typing?

The thing I miss most about the old style Favourites was the "one click and your done" effect. The tagging function is great if you want to build a classification meta-data for everyone to use, but I still like my Favourites page for easy reach for things I view often like the Grammar Primer and the Writers topic list. I have only 8 Favourites on my page but I regret the fact that I can no longer add to the list if I find something else I know I am going to refer to regularly.

In my opinion, the two concepts are not interchangeable!

I hope that Dave finds time to address this problem soon. I can take a nap at times waiting to tag something.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Me too... I've gone back to bookmarking my favorite posts with my browser rather than using tags... I'll tag them once the system is more friendly again.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I'm having the same problem with the tags. I have yet to add any due to the screen freezing up.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Good news! JoanJ just posted a thread to let us know that this problem seems to have been addressed... I tagged a page just now, and the tag went through in a flash.

:-)

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

how do you tag a page

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Exciting News.....thanks for sharing the update

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

When you're on the page or the post, click on the little yellow "file folder" symbol in the top right corner (the one that used to be used for "favorites"). Then you'll be prompted to input one or more "tags" (names to use to find the information again), separated by commas.

Here's a thread with some good info on tags: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/805318/

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

thanks jill

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Dave has been working on the tags - and I'm sure will continue working to improve the functionality ;o)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

wow! He sure has! I quickly stopped tagging things because of how long it took me. I always thought it was cus I'm on dial-up.

Just now though I tried tagging this thread and the process went through in a heart-beat! I'm impressed.

Also noticed it was set up now very nicely, so much cleaner and much more easy to navigate.

Thanks Dave! And thanks to the messenger, too, Terry!
