Well it is another hot day in the desert. Late yesterday one of the hummer babies left the nest. I was thrilled for it. Well this morning the nest again had two occupants. I started in the garden at 5:30am and sat down on the back patio around 10am. I usually do not sit outside that time of day but I was hot, tired and just wanted a cold drink of water. To my delight I had two dancing orange dragon flies dipping into the Koi pond. I think they are laying eggs in the pond. Then out of no where came an adult Hummingbird that landed on one of the large flat rocks of the waterfall that flows into the Koi pond. The waterfall is necessary to keep the water cool and place oxygen into the water. The hummingbird rolled under the small trickle and then flew off. She did this three times. I finally got up and got my camera but of course she would not go near the pond as long as I had the camera. I did take a picture of the dragonfly resting on the jasmine branch on the right side of the waterfall. I doubt you can see it because it is the same color as the rock. Have a great evening.

wonderful!! What a nice area. You can keep the heat, but I'd take the pond any minute.

Great photos! We live in east Tn. and usually have a ton of hummingbirds but this year they have been slim. We had a very cool spring and I heard on a gardening radio show this was the reason for the lack of hummers....but I am not sure.

Very nice website and forum!!!!!

Hello from hot Las Vegas. The older, I assume, larger hummer left early yesterday. He kept coming back and the two hummers were doing a lot of communicating. The smaller one had not left the nest. We had a fair amount of wind yesterday and their nest was blowing in the breeze. I was in the courtyard the majority of the morning from 5:30am to about 11:00am. The mother and larger baby hummer kept giving me a hard time. I finally sat down and didn't move and they forgot about me. This was the first time the younger baby left the nest. It was with the encouragemen of the mother and larger baby hummer. Now she has left the nest and has not returned, we thought she had moved on with her sibling and mother. No way, she has moved higher up in the fig vine still in the courtyard area. When my housekeeper saw the hummer as she was cleaning the upstairs patio, she called to me and I ran and got my camera. By the time I got upstairs, the baby hummer had moved into an overhang of fig vine. Looks something like an opened ended cave. When the mother comes by, the baby hummer starts beeping. When the older baby hummer comes by, she is silent. We haven't been on the upstairs patio all day just so the mother can take care of the smaller, more timid one and they can get on their way. The mother has brown wings and a green chest. Both babies have black wings and very white chests. I will miss them but what a wonderful experience to watch the whole process. They got so big in the end, the nest was to small and they were hanging out on both sides.

Incredible pictures and what a unique opporunity to view them up close.

When I got up this morning at 5:30am the temp was 71. That was just wonderful. I walked the dogs and then went into the courtyard just to see if my friends were still around. All three, mother and two baby hummers were having a party going from one hanging part of the fig vine to the next. This part of the climbing fig is at least 30 feet up attached to the overhang by the front door. I do not do well on ladders, I have a balance problem, therefore the fig hangs down about 3 feet because it hasn't been trimmed.. This is where they usually build their nests. I can see them closer from the upstairs patio but again I am leaving them alone to enjoy their new life. There are probably a lot of insects in the vine that mommy can teach them to catch. I think I will put out my feeder tomorrow.
