It's raining again today.....

Tils' skeeter braclets' can be found at Wal-Mart garden center or any other I would imagine. I've used them for years and they work all the time. You can wear them or your hat or the wrists of your gloves or up on your sleeves. If you keep them in their little plastic cases they last for years and they glow in the dark. How neat is that.

Eugene, OR

That is REALLY neat. Don't know how I could miss them at Wal-Mart. At the top of my list next time I go shopping. Thank you so much!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I like them most, because you don't have to spray stuff on you and smell when you go in, just take them off and into there cases, wish I knew about them years ago.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Do they have a brand name - I'd like to check to see if they have them over here. See if they work against the midges.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

You know when I don't throw a package away and keep it, nobody wants to know but when I do, Be Da##.
Hope Willow knows.
Sorry

I know that feeling - but its usually to do with instructions with me - 'Yea yea I know how to do this', and then after the recycling has gone - 'now, which end is up?'

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I goodle it, there are alot out there.

Thanks Tills - I hadn't even realized these existed. I'll find one locally.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I will look for the name next time I go in. They work for gnats.

I had a most wonderful night and a whole day at Carlas, Me and her fur babies hit it off real good, they love me, mostly Desi. She is just to cute, when I was getting ready to leave, she wanted to get in my lap top case.

This is her, trying to get my hand.

Opps wrong tread.

How could I have missed Laurie's Pixy rant?? And such a good one! Entirely appropriate, I must say. There is nothing I hate more than being required to have Cont. Ed Units and having to pay for a class I could teach blindfolded!! Makes me want to spit nails. If I had to waste a beautiful day inside as well, I believe the old blood pressure would skyrocket. I just love how they repackage the same old thing and then try to sell it as 'new'. AAAARRRHHHH!!
I believe we could make a case for gardening therapy. It's been known to happen. I'm wondering how we could get credit for reading gardening books?? A case study on the effects of gardening on specific mental conditions?? Should I begin to write up a proposal???

Okay, enough of that. Today was AWESOME!! Finally the correct type of weather for my constitution. The plants are positively singing! Only problem is that with this fabulous weather the true size of my plants is becoming apparent and Soferdig's words are coming back to haunt me. Too many plants!! And more came in the mail today. What's a girl to do??
What was that I was saying about the effects of gardening on certain mental conditions?? I believe I have one of those, and the gardening only makes it worse! something so incredibly soooottthhhinnngggg about potting up baby plants!

That's okay, Tills, because it's a really cute photo!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks, I took me 5 shots to get a good one. ^_^

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

I am sure we can make a case for digging, planting and dog playing as mental health essentials! Not to mention ranting.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Ahhh ~ three beautiful days in a row...what could be better (besides three beautiful MONTHS in a row?)

I believe each day should include a good ranting if need be...nothing like venting out to the universe to clear the head. Not to mention, what seems so huge when it's locked inside the head seems to diminish in size and power once it's thrown out there. Then one can easily move forward to the more important things in life, those mentioned above...digging, planting, furbaby lovin', etc.

Yes! Rant on!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I can't believe it was crappy today and is supposed to rain tomorrow! Earlier it was forcasted sun all week and I planned on that!

Ohhhhh i'm sooo very, very sorry for all up there! We're finally getting a decent run of weather! since Saturday it has been nice every day until this morning!!!! I think I'll have to post a "sun" picture. This morning there was some drizzle and fog, that hung around until the afternoon. But, it wasn't Bad. A few days ago they were saying a fair chance of rain off and on from this fri. through Sund, but now they have chance that to just Friday!!!!! still a small chance on the other two days, but I'm crossing my fingers!! How is everyone up there for waterlevels? I'm just curious becouse I drive past at least two, sometimes three, dams every day, and boy have they been the highlight of the conversations for the last month. They're all much higher than their high levels and for quite a while now. Every now and then they open all the flood gates for a while and then shut after 10 or 12 hours. It's strange!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ok.... picture with sun. Hopefully to send some good sun karma your way!

Redchic, I saw a show on TV last night about dams - a big part was on those in your area - beautiful, but a bit scary too.

Gwen, I'm with you - I was absolutely devastated yesterday when I woke up to rain. It caught me completely by surprise. I don't get out much anyway because of Steve's illness, but I do at least manage an hour here and there if the weather is good.

Poulsbo, WA

Lovely photo redchic, it belongs in a garden magazine.

Murmur, sorry to hear about your depressing day. Having the sun out makes such a difference when you are struggling with illness. My prayers go to you.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Is that purplish shrub cercis canadensis "Forest Pansy"? I so love that. Does it stay smaller than the regular redbud?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

That is a nice sun picture. Thanks

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Murmur, I'm very curious.... what was the show on the dams and aired on what channel? I would love to see it! and to know what was scary about it!!! Was todays' weather any better for you? I sure hope so!

Thanks Neo and Willow, you're waaay to kind! Believe me, I crop the picture to keep out the most of the weeds!

Hey Katie! That definitely is Forest Pansy!! Good call!! Ummm, I don't think that it is really any noticeable amount smaller than any of the other Cercis Canadensis varieties. It is a little smaller than cercis texensis, and the straight species of cercis occidentalis. But, I prune mine once every year to keep them reasonable. I cut them back to about 7-8' every spring and they'll be 10'+ by fall. This is a view of that tree from the back side, about 9' tall now (not including that stray branch on top that's going to be cut off).

It may have been the history channel, but I'm not sure (DH had it on, then fell asleep but I ended up watching some of it). It was, unfortunately, showing how most dams were built too long ago to have been done in the safest method (ie seismic and geologic considerations). It did emphasize that most dams now are having improvements done and are watched very, very closely for any signs of problems. The three in your area are being monitored really well. The scary part was when they showed what COULD happen. Sorry I don't have better information for you.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

redchic - So the cercis is amenable to being kept down under 10 feet? I have an area where I want to keep a 10' tree, but I'm not sure what to put there. I love the leaves on that Forest Pansy - it made quite an impression on me at the nursery. You've kep yours a very lovely shape.

Carole - I know what you mean about picking up miscellaneous pieces of information on the television. I end up with those tidbits from programs I'm "not really watching" all the time.

Poulsbo, WA

Murmur, I watched it, too. It was either the science channel or the history channel, because that is only television I watch.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the info Murmur and Neo. I will have to check that out. I think with a little resourcefullness I may be able to track down the next airing then. Thanks!! As far as better information goes, that's exactly what I was expecting. I think concernig water levels... if they don't get many feet higher, they'd all be fine. In the event of an earthquake, who knows.... if just one fails, it will be bad but not catastophic for the larger towns (half of my town would be wiped off the map). But, if it's a domino effect all of the willamette valley would have catastrophic issues and my little area would fare better than the rest!! But, let's not think about that!!!

Thanks Katie, yep it's quite amenable to being kept under 10. But, is you wanted to keep it between say 8 and 10 it might require a light pruning in the summer as well. In the last few years they've ranged between 10 and 11' by the end of summer. But, I have another one that I keep to between 4 and 5' as well and I only prune it once a year as well (it's an addiction, I love that tree)! Sometimes though, the deer help with pruning that one and strangely enough they don't tough the other two!! Again, I'm not on my home computer for the next fews days. But, I think I posted a picture of that one on another forum. If I can find it... I'll link it if you would like?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Redchic - thanks for the information. I just didn't realize that you could control the size of the tree successfully over a long period of time. I'm sure it depends on the tree and how you do it. I just want them to continue to look informal and natural.

I can wait until you're home. If you can remember to share the link once you're home, that would be great.

Hey Katie. Well, I finally returned home this evening, but I didn't get there until almost 8:45 with just a little light left, and the sprinkler was on, so I didn't have much of a chence to adjust the camera for the light and all that so that's why the dogwood behind this has glowing white flowers and the alstroemeria is neon orange! I figured that it was easier to take a picture that to find the others. However, you must not pay attention to the layout and design of plants here plus all the weeds, etc. I actually had more of this planted well with a decent design and then several years ago a small fire that was started by an idiot shooting at the powerlines above, burnt and killed most everything in this area except the dogwood and cercis, the only thing that was planted since was the alstroemeria and then other projects required less time attention to fix..... so I moved on to them. anyhow, the alstroemeria is about 2' tall, the forest pansy between 4 and 5' and the dogwood is about 7.5' at it's tallest spot.

and here is another angle of it. oh, the dogwood has been there 7 or 8 years and the forest pansy was planted the next year. Don't even ask about the scheme of why they are so close. The cercis had a different shape before the fire that made a little more sense. Someday I may prune it back to that, but i've found that if I leave more for the deer to eat of it they're less likely to make it look iniliated.
