Sally & Lady, Those are all really neat! Lady, I've never seen any of those pyramidal shaped ones here, nor any like yours Sally. I wonder what determines the mix.
Are either of you familiar with Kennett Square, Pa.? It's about 25-30 miles from here and they call it the mushroom capital. The whole area has a wonderful smell.
Toadstools and fungi
Oh, Stormy, Sally and I went on the Longwood garden trip in the spring, Kennett Square, Pa is right there. I did not have time to spend there at KS but I did have some wonderful mushroom soup for lunch at Longwood gardens. Another reason to go back! : )
snort chuckle, are we familiar with Kennett Square...
But why is it the mushroom captial? I mean I know they grow a lot of mushrooms, but why did that come about.
The vollume of mushrooms grown in the Kennett Square area is the largest in the state and maybe largest in the Northeast. The bedding is horse poop and straw, sawdust or both. The finished or bedding waste makes great garden soil building organic matter.
First European shrooms imported here by 2 kennett farmers. One had a greenhouse and wanted a use for the space under his carnation racks. Voila, shroom bed. They started a business and ultimately developed a spawn that is still used today for most US shrooms.
By 1930's 85% of US shrooms were grown in Kennett. Today it's Pa.'s 4th cash crop.
I love those mushrooms when they are fresh.....really fresh. That is a condition hard to come by these days. The farmers markets somehow have nice produce most of the time but the big box stores apparently have to much packing and shipping time to deal with.
stormyla- you're a font of fungi!
I am wondering if the bountiful organic s at docgipe's place means tons of mushrooms.
Yes indeed Sally, They are what grows best in my garden!!!!! I'll bet he gets some good ones! Wonder if DOC's are all orange from mixing with those pumpkin seeds??? I've seen lots of photos of the orange ones, but never came across one in person.
Orange from a fungi-pumpkin mix up...........nope! I'm still trying to get an orange pumpkin using orange genetics into a big yeller. Actually I am enjoying the work of others this year. For whatever reason I have had few fungi show this year. We have lots of the organic material around that should bring them on. You all have been amusing me with your fungi pix.
doc- my theory is that you have so much good life for the fungi bodies, they don't feel the need to breed.
Stormy, I had a orange/red stink horn in my flowerbed once, I need to weed out that bed sometime. I'll keep an eye out for one this year.
Gosh Lady, I'm jealous! I don't have any near that big. Several years back I had a button type one that must have been equivalant to 4lbs. of mushrooms! But nothing large since.
I like that first one, kind of reminds me of a school desk.
I'm glad you made it back up!!!!!!!!
Lady, I don't know what a stinkhorn is. Guess I'll have to buy a mushroom book. Another passion born!!!! I injured my foot this summer or I would be out woods walking. Now, I'm just hobbling all around the garden. No high heels or pavement pounding in New York with my nieces for me right now. But they are begging me to come up and spend a weekend with them to go out to Coney Island. Disney has bought up all of the property and will be tearing down the boardwalk and building a theme park right in Brooklyn!
Wow! Looks like you stained and varnished them. Stormy, you need to get another hobby! LOL
4 lbs. that one big shroom!

Here is a link to Stinkhorns.
Did you say Disney! Now you really got my attention! Hope your foot is better soon!
Lady, ROFLOL! I certainly would have noticed one of them.... I do have another hobby, it's called CRITTER CONTROL! Now I even dream about voles and groundhogs!!! I really do need to get a life.
I have been reading about your Critter Control, maybe if you grow more toadstools flavored just for your Critters that would take care of the problem. "Eat toadstools and die"!
Great idea! Maybe I'll have to go down to Kennett and get some of that good fertilizer!! I think some of them were chomping away on the ones that looked like Jelly Fish. Bon Appetite!
I'd love to host "The last supper"!
Stormy, you win the Strange Award . I like the 2nd pic, all you need is a pair of little legs with stripe stockings and red shoes. "Ding Dong the witch is dead" Sorry, could not resist!
Cute- never seen that before
Oh I think I saw the muffin ones at apark on Monday.
One camera is away with DD and other is AWOL--feel like my right hand is cut off...have the sick feeling there was a small but hundred dollar bag left at the last hotel.on our trip..
Amazing as it may seem.....lost and found works some of the time. Cross your fingers and call. You might get lucky. I left a valued item once at Gaithersburg, Md. Hilton. Low and behold it had been turned in. It could have been fenced easily. I gave that gal a nice tip.
Sure is wonderful when somebody is honest!!!!! My young son found a twenty dollar bill floating around the water park once. We gave it to the office. At the end of the day, it had been claimed, or else the office people had a good start toawrds their dinner. who knows for sure. B ut we sure hope that someones day was not ruined as it would have been had they completely lost the 20.
You're right- I should call that last hotel again.
