Thanks Sally! That brings back memories. When the Daniel Boone show, with Fess Parker was popular, we used to play Daniel Boone. My older brother always made me the indian who had to be tied to the tree! On rainy days, my mother often found me tied to the basement banister!!!!
I live right beside Valley Forge National Park and the Park Rangers often give women warnings re solitary ventures as there have been molestation incidents. I'm afraid that I can't run as fast as I used to and now take such advice seriously.
Toadstools and fungi
Anymore you are not safe anywhere, even in parking lots. You have to be very alert at all times.
As for most kids I don't think they know how to play like we did, I never see parents outside with their kids, playing ball, building snowmen and forts in the winter. Well at least the parents know where they are... in front of TV or the computer.
Happy fungi hunting, all !
Great pic, looks like the middle one is getting ready to gobble up the others. lol
Those are so cute, remember the Chinese mushrooms in Disney's Fantasia?
Oh- we had a big willow tree falabout eight years ago. Turned out it had major rot inside. We had some great fungi on that stump area for a few years. I think those pics are lost- we lost a computer hard drive about three years ago. I'm trying to help the fungi- I buried a few pieces of the willow back in the corner, but I don't often go back to look.
Sally, I have lost a few pictures to computer death too. And you think some of the flower/fingi pictures are not worth saving to disks until you need them. "Been there, done that!"
I have a crazy number of flower and garden pictures at this point. I think I'll start a thread about how do you handle all these pictures...
Hi stormyla- crossposted!

Every once in awhile nature puts on a great show. This year is a great fungi year. In our area we have not had nice study rain throughout the whole spring and early summer for a lot of years. I don't know the water table facts but we sure have had nice rain thus far this year.
There is a large maple tree aroung the corner from us, It has this very large growth of fungus that grows every year. It grows gets large, dries up and sometimes some kids decide to knock it off. The tree is very healthy. The bark in that area had some damage a long time ago before the fungus started to grow.
Fungi on trees are there because there is work for it to do. It is commonly called punk. It is cleaning up rot that reflects some injury or disease. Leave it on the tree to do as much good as it can do. When it is very hard and dried you may remove it if you wish. It does no harm left alone. You can take a dry growth, knock it apart into small pieces and use it to be lighted to create smoke that will keep the skeeters away. The punk sticks you buy is that punk ground into a fine granular material with flour paste rolled on a stick. Lots of campers and fishermen use those punk sticks for that purpose. They can be home made but most purchase them. It's a fun kid project. We made them by the thousands as a boy scout camping project. Never saw a kid that did not like to play when the result was smoke. A food processer will grind them into usable granular form. Don't let the wives see you grinding the thunder out of them in the kitchen. It' OK here. My wife is tinker trained. I've made many a unmentionable messes to clean up over the years. It's not any worse than my fumble fingers making home made bread. Now that's a mess by the time I finish playing with flour. :)
Thanks, Lady & Doc, I'll leave it alone. It was never there before, maybe all of the wet weather this year caused it. There is a dead large limb in the tree that I can't reach, even with the tall ladder & pole saw. Guess I'll have to spring for some tree work. Usually I would just let a storm knock it down, but this one is right over the driveway.
I once knew someone who had a pet snake. He used to grind up live rats in the blender to feed it!!!!!!
Rats! Lordy Lordy..........why not just put one in the cage and let the snake do its thing. I say "rats" to grinding for any reason. :)
That one's just too cute sally!
This is not quite FUNGI 101 but we sure are getting to see lots of them and learning some of the basic understanding of them and why so many this year.
Lady, I think you win "Best of Show" for that 2nd Mushroom that you posted. I don't think I've ever seen a prettier one!!!!
Thanks stormy. It's fun to explore looking for new ones and mine are just in my yard which is not really that big. I am sure as the summer progresses there will be new discoveries.
Sally thats a nice one by the pot! "Pleated" I like that.
Doc thanks for the encouragement to keep posting. I'm sure you have a lot more to say but you want to keep this thread safe and I think thats a good idea. The beauty of nature is sometimes better left as a feast for the eyes.
LOL what a combo pot! Maybe they will grow big enough to act as umbrellas for your cacti.
That is pretty funny, Claypa! Good idea, Lady
Little Golden Books has one on the mushrooms and fungi. Mine is up at our hunting camp or I could name it accruately. Someone always has his nose in it when we are in camp.
Doc, That's totally charming!
From above--the biggest one is seven inches across
stormyla- I think you have cup fungus there. They'll get seeds inside a cup. I had no idea any fungus made seeds until I got those.
Doc- as a kid I spent a lot of time paging thru Golden Nature guides. Still have some for my kids, or have replaced with new ones. (Inside is exactly the same as the 60's versions)
Sally those are nice srooms! Glad you have joined in on the fun.
