Chestnut or Chinkapin

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

I saw these small trees last year and thought they were one of the oaks, Quercus prinus, prinoides, michauxii or something along those lines... all of which (I think) are in this same forest in Maryland. Then yesterday I saw these flowers on them.

The leaves are bigger than the descriptions I see for Allegheny Chinkapin , Castanea pumila, but I have a hard time believing they're American Chestnuts, Castanea dentata, the only likely candidates for Maryland on the USDA site. No visible ancient stumps or anything like that. I was able to take some decent pics of the flowers

The last pic looks like male flowers and these look like female maybe.

Maybe both male and female?

The trees are small, 12' / 3m or so and smaller. The leaves are 3-4" wide (8-10 cm) Didn't see any bigger ones, but I'm not sure about that. Any ideas? Are these Allegheny Chinkapins? I guess it's just wishful thinking these could be American Chestnuts.

I'd suspect C. pumila - some quite similar pics here: http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/trees/capu.html

I can only see male catkins in your pics.

Okay, thanks Resin. That looks more like it than the descriptions I've read.
