Daily Pics - Vol. #113

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

We just came from here ........ http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/853887/

Excellent photos everyone on the previous thread !!! I'll begin the new thread with a photo taken last weekend of a nesting Killdeer. A week earlier, I accidentally found the nest only because I saw the Killdeer performing her injured act, as I pulled into a parking lot. Seeing the fragility of the nesting site, I alerted the park rangers so they could place orange cones around the nesting site. A stone parking lot seems to be a favorite nesting site for the Killdeer.

What a wonderful start to the new thread Linthicum; the Flickers I see are so shy. All your photos are just so great. I especially like the one with the worm

So heartwarmed over all the pictures in the last thread everyone! By the time I was done typing the following the new thread was started so I’m cutting and pasting!

Quoting:
Robin this morning doing my morning outside chores. GM

heehee GM, I can't get the birds to help me with the chores one little bit! What's your secret?? just teasing of course :-)
Jane.. those are the cutest pictures ever! (baby quail)
Nice photos Janet! The nests birds make are just amazing!!
Pelle, lovely flight photo! I've given up on trying to get them. Interesting HF; wonder if the boys will find her mysterious & sexy!
Elphaba... I thought that was a wing pattern. Poor thing! And those Dove nests, amazing they have any success. Pitiful building if you can even call it building. I was feeling sorry for Rudi too. Day before yesterday she started bringing 2 babies to feed not 1. I'm in trouble now, I'll never have enough meat scraps for 4 roadrunners, yikes.

I have a hard time to keep some feeders filled for the Woodpecker. Grackles are been real nuisance and emptying most of the feeders. This poor fella was here to check if there was any food left.

I wonder if he could add one more piece of grass, in that beak! :))

LOL, burn!

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

linthicum, beautiful photos, as usual.

The Savannah Sparrows use the fence around the back side of Anchorage International Airport, to perch on. This evening I drover alone the road, on the out side of the fence, looking for them. I saw lots of sparrows, but most wouldn't let me close enough for a picture. This bird was the exception. I finally got some good closeup pictures. But, I had to shoot this picture though the chain link fence.

Linth, just gorgeous. If you go back to that parking lot and can get a long shot picture of the cones and nest, I'd love to see it.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the new thread Linth and also for the gorgeous shots!

Great pics on this thread so far as well as the previous thread everyone!

Burn...that last shot cracks me up!

Pelle...Awesome shot of the Red Tailed Hawk on the previous thread!

Here is a poor pic of the Eastern Phoebe babies that are in the barn. The nest is right up to the ceiling making for poor shooting conditions! I think there are 4 babies, as well as two Barn Swallow nests with babies also. They are in a darker area so couldn't get pics of those. I guess the baby Karma worked Mrs. Ed and Nanny!!

This Mockingbird was strutting on the back lawn yesterday...witnessed it several times. He would lift up his wings and then just sort of strut around. Don't know what it means but someone on this forum surely does!

More weird stuff...this Eastern Bluebird landed in the daylily bed and laid flat on his belly! I've never seen that happen before either...the female was above in the tree spreading her tail feathers! I can imagine what it means....

Oh my Rose, where to begin. First of all, you need to give me that camera and lens, and then teach me your tricks. *waves hypnotic spiraling watch*.

All of these are just gorgeous. Can't believe now you've made a COWBIRD look good. Just lovely.

I remember a thread somewhere about a bluejay or thrasher (can't remember) displaying that same activity with the wings on the ground. Don't remember the conclusion of that discussion either. But you're right, someone will know about all of this stuff.

Perhaps the mockingbird thinks you're cute and is trying to impress you with his stuff!

LOL Mrs. Ed

Beautiful shot of the Redheaded Woodpecker rose!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL Mrs. Ed! Thanks Nanny!

Resin...was he really sunbathing?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yep, it is showing the normal posture for sunbathing birds, spreadeagled, and with the rump feathers erected so the sun shines directly onto the preen gland, this helps it with preen oil production.

Resin

no kidding.

amazing.

Great pics Rose! I had a Robin doing the same sunbathing yesterday.
