Well Gail, you put down 1 leaf and you know what happens *lol* Silly me, can't throw them away......no........we have to start them ALL *lol*

What a beautiful orchid Gail *no smilie* *lol*

Speaking of orchids, went for a walk in the woods tonight and here are some of my girls

This one is VERY special to me. It's not a one of a kind but is very rare. There are usually a group of 5-7 of them but something stepped on them this year and this is my only survivor. I'm grateful to have at least 1 to share with you all :)

This is the result of last years pollinating.
I am SO proud.
Lady slippers rarely get pollinated as bees are seldom in the woods and once a bee gets stuck in a lady slipper it learns to never go back.
So.........I run around playing bee getting bit by ticks and mosquitos to be sure that my ladies will continue on and that my grandchildren will be able to enjoy them someday. It takes 3 years for a seed to reach blooming size and out of the 1000's of seeds, maybe only 1 or 2 will land in the "right" spot to grow.

Oh well, I will continue to keep trying. I've been doing it for 2 years now. This will make the 3rd year :)

These ladies are a VERY dark raspberry color and not the normal light pink. They are the ones I pictured the pods above from. We want LOTS of this color *lol*

beautiful pictures and I sometimes wish we had your cold weather to grow plants that we can't grow here, but everyone grows different plants depending on the zones.

I don't know what I am doing wrong but sinningia Playful Porpoise blooms all droop........nothing to write home about

She's still beautiful in my eyes Gail :)
Give her a little stick to lean on. Maybe she's just too young to be puttin' on blooms yet. She sure is pretty though. Love the coloring and "fullness" of her :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You may be right, Kim, as she is such a young plant and has buds all over her. I think maybe the stems just aren't strong enough yet to support such huge blooms.

One would think I am having a real baby as nervous as I get thinking about repotting these this weekend in my own soil mix and taking cuttings!!!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Dimmer nice haul..LOL..Kim is a sweetheart for sure : )
Kim those lady slippers are so neat looking..You even hybridize them? That is too cool that you do that..I can just see you buzzing around polinating them..lol..thats dedication for sure! You grow girl! I am really impressed. Those are so lovely!
Gail that sinningia is really cute..maybe when it gets older it might hold the blooms different...still neat looking tho the way it is...

(Zone 1)

Wonderful blooms everyone!

Kim: I adore Lady Slippers ... sure wish they grew in Florida! I agree with Gail ... there are so many things y'all northerners can grow that won't do well in the heat of the south. But, then again - there are so many things we grow in the ground as landscape plants down here that can only be grown as houseplants in the north.

I love vacationing in the mountains of N.C. and Tennessee and seeing all the beautiful plants that I can't grow this far south. And, we went to upstate N.Y. a few years ago to visit my husband's brother and his family and I was in awe of some of the plants I saw blooming there! I so wish I could grow peonies here!! And, there were some really, really gorgeous clematis vines that I wanted to bring home too! Even when I visit my sister in North Georgia I always oooh and aaah over some of the plants I see there. She has a magnolia tree that is just soo gorgeous! I think she called it Lady Jane Magnolia. And, Japanese Maples! And, Tulips, Daffodils ... all those pretty spring blooms.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

gessiegal;
i believe that sinningia is suppose to droop, thats just the wasy it is.lol

We went to Disney in 1999 Lin and I cried when I had to come home. The flowers were simply amazing!
The tropicals you can grow down south are just SO awesome. Mimosa trees, OMG the list goes on and on.
Everything just seems to grow with no problems as your humidity is just perfect.
I will say that WHEN our growing season is here, it is very nice. However, it is VERY short. We are cold and dark for about 6 months out of the year. It's dark by 3:30 in the winter and things really struggle hard due to lack of light here. So although the blooms are very pretty and I cherish each and every one, they only last a short time and the fall quickly arrives. It seems in Maine, we are one of the last to get spring (except this year for some reason) and the first to get frost. June, July, August are really summer here and usually Sept, October are fall. November - April (6 months) I would say are winter and May is spring. November - April is VERY hard though. It's long, dark, and cold. People with Seasonal Affect Disorder (depression) really struggle these months (such as me) and I am one of the lucky ones as I have my babies and my stand to help get me through those months. I don't know what I'd do without it. I also crochet alot during those months too.

Yes Nancy, I even pollinate the lady slippers *lol* What a nut huh?

Hope you all have a great day :)

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Good morning Kim, Lin and Bonnie!

I only made it through the winters in the mountains of New Mexico for 11 years with gro lights all over my house. Maybe I had Seasonal Affect Disorder but with all my gro lights going I was a happy camper.

Bonnie, glad to know that Playful Porpoise just blooms that way. thanks

Kim, we don't even have 4 seasons here. We go from February and March being spring to summer until cooler weather in November. December is usually pretty weather also. January is the pits! (LOL) For some reason we just don't get sun in January. One year in Houston my neighbor and I counted 28 days straight that we didn't have a glimpse of the sun in January.

Here is what bloomed for me today... Or should I say bloomed extras...I don't know the name of her but I think she is pretty.

Good Morning All, been a busy week here after being gone several days last weekend and then "playing" here most all day on Monday! ^_^

Kim I was so happy to see that Alsobia Miguel blooming for you, it is so beautiful, I am envious!! I love those blooms!! I had two adult sized plants (Cygnet and Miguel) that never bloomed for me, never! So I tore them all down and sent off all the stolons but a very few. I have maybe half a dozen in a salad bowl terrarium and still nothing! I'll give them through the summer and then they're out of here!! LOL

I had to goggle Lady Slippers as I had never heard of them, since the seasons and the weather you describe are identical to mine (except I get more snow!) I'm surprised I don't see them here?? I'll have to research.....

Gail the streps are gorgeous and I love Playful Porpoise ...... but Merry Christmas takes the cake, gorgeous! I'm glad you finally picked up Dimmer's package, I've been waiting and waiting to see you post about it!! So funny!!!! I think we need a picture with you wearing the doo rag and with all the key chains attached! LOL

I've a couple new streps blooming but haven't gotten pictures yet .... ...so back to my old standbys that I'm enjoying each day ......Peridot's Kitalope from Monday....Love it!

I think the Roulette Cherry is open all the way now... I have to say it is as pretty as it's picture. I am glad I taped the bend in the stem... I am thinking of cutting the stem off after this bloom dies. There are three more on the stem but they are not ready to bloom yets. I have another stem coming with blooms on it so thought the bent one may take allot out of the plant, but hey what do I know so if it were your stem would you cut it?
Thanks,
Susan

Brenda,
So pretty.. I have a few of them and can't wait for them to start blooming..... You should get a box on Monday... It is going out today...

Susan that dark purple strep is so pretty!! The second fantasy strep that you posted looks just like my Party Boy so I'd say that's what it is. With the Fantasies it's easier to identify and give them a name, they're not that many out there yet!

Here's my Bristol's Sixth Sense from about two weeks ago .... now all of the sudden just out of the blue it has flopped over and looks like it's on it's last leg! Hate when that happens. It looks like over watering but it was in a self watering pot and has done well in for a year???? I need to un-pot and see what's going on I guess....

Cherry Roulette is to die for Susan!!! I am so excited to get my box!

It was a good idea to tape that stem it looks like, I don't know what I'd do, it might be interesting to see if the other blooms open with a taped stem. ^_^

Gotta get DH out the door and the grandkids settled in, hope to be back later.... can't leave without a picture though.....Bristol's Blue Bopper!

Thanks for the name Brenda... I will put an ID on it after this... Yup your box should come on Monday... It is a very big leaf so you should do fine with rooting it....
Ok gotta run for a few...

Susan

great pics and I just love all those Bristol streps. I don't have very many as I probably need to be ordering from Rob himself.

Love the Peridot's Kitlope and another yummy picture of Roulette Cherry.

I just love Brennan's orchids as they send full grown plants....I think you told me about them, Brenda.

Here are some pics I took as I unloaded my boxes today. Here is a pic of Raspberry Truffles, Shenandoah Sugarplum and Bristol's Very Berry as I sold them at the sale and one called Shenandoah summer with the tiniest blooms as small as Thumbelina but a dark raspberry color and white edges.

I ordered morning glory plants from the DG Marketplace and I don't have the vine I ordered also. they are healthy plants.
Good to see you back and posting, Brenda.

I just remembered that when I saw Brenda's pics from her trip that I forgot to post a picture of two of my kids I haven't posted. The grandchildren have all been posted before.
(I am certainly glad they don't belong to Dave's Gardens)

Gail, GREAT order and everything looks so healthy too :) Gotta love orders like that.
Your children are such lookers, along with your grandchildren. You done did good :)
Maybe when I get home today from work I can post a few pictures before we leave for groceries :)
Not really any new blooms but maybe I have SOMETHING to share (even if I have to go looking in the woods for something *lol*).
It was funny, when I came in last night, I stripped down to nothing and asked hubby to check me for ticks. I just felt like they were all over me *lol* They weren't of course but I just felt like they were *lol*
Brenda, that Blue Bopper is awesome so is Peridot's Kitlope. You really do GREAT with streps and kohleria :)
Susan, that Roulette is just stunning!
Been trying to organize my pictures a little so that when I do my "she's having my baby" thread this fall I will have an organized folder of parent pictures *lol*. What alot of work *lol*

Nancy, I will love your strep leaves next week plus I owe you some things I couldn't get in the last box. Verrrry excited.

I am just flat jealous that Kim can hybridize as it makes no sense to me (LOL)

Brenda, I owe you the leaves I didn't send last time as I couldn't find the plants (surprised?) and I also am home by myself now and can't wait to get some of your strep leaves.

If I say so out loud who I owe plants to I won't forget or I will be very embarrassed. I owe Jan, Rain, Brenda, Nancy, Dimmer, Kim and Nan........uh oh......I said it out loud.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi, Kim!
I got an email from a friend the other day who said she was covered in chigger bites and was miserable. I told her my mother always used clear finger nail polish on us (even where chiggers shouldn't be)!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

OK, now this is going to sound just foolish.....ummmm.....what is a chigger? Is it a mosquito or no see-um?

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

A Chigger is the larva of the red mite.Almost so tiny, You can't see them. They attach to various animals including humans and feed on skin, often causing itching. Extreme itching and red sores.Lou

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

gail;
you have beautiful kids. & flowers of course.lol
bonnie

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

My mom grew up in OK and she still talks about chiggers, they sound nasty and miserable!! I'll stick with checking for ticks! LOL

Gail glad to hear your ready for your leaves!!! I'll get them sent off asap..... You don't owe me a thing!! 25 leaves and two plants was way generous already!!! Having to steal pictures of your kids while driving is funny ! You've got some excellent genes carrying on in your family........ beautiful kids and grandkids!!

Check out this Kohleria with rhizomes growing along the stems??? I think Jan posted one like this before ..... did we figure out why they do this?? Interesting......
