Frizzles & Silkies & Sizzles..Oh My!

Cave Creek, AZ

Their everywhere, their everywhere!!! I've got chickie babies everywhere! WooHoo!! Working on my third generation of Sizzles, breeding crosses to crosses trying to stabilize my lines. I've got six hens brooding & due to hatch over the next two weeks. I've got 36 chicks, 4 days & younger in the nurseries, with more due in the next week & almost thirty eggs in the incubator! I've also got almost thirty already moved to the outside chick house from earlier hatches ranging in age from 2 to 4 months. The earlier chicks have several who seem to be developing into Frilkies (Frizzled Silkies), all of them Blue Splash. Some of the 4 day olds are already starting to curl as well and I've got a couple who appear to be a powder blue. It's so kool watching all the possibilities develop..I just had to share!!

Any other Sizzle fans out there who would like to share info, I'd love to hear from you!!

This is Winston, my smooth Sizzle roo. He is dark blue, has 5 toes, dark skin, a top knot & a silkie comb but in red. I'm just starting to get chicks from him breed to my curly coated sizzle girls.

This is Clyde, my Frilkie (aka Frizzled Silkie) Roo. He is black with red highlights in his neck, has a red silkie comb, top knot, blue skin & 5 toes. He is a good producer too. He is also looking for a new home as he tend to produce only black & I'm into blues.

This is Una Blue, my best example of what I think a Sizzle should look like. She is dark blue, with a great top knot, five toes, blue skin and a very nice frizzled coat. I'm just starting to hatch her chicks bred to Winston the smooth Sizzle roo.

Sorry, the last pic is my second best Sizzle hen, who is black. This is Una Blue. She has a better head and is dark blue.

Ok, those are the three main coat types I'm getting, with variations on the combs, # of toes, skin color & top knots. From this years crop I'm probably only going to keep birds with 5 toes, unless they have some really good other qualities. I'm also bringing blue spash color into the mix which has given me some dark chicks with light color flight feathers. They may outgrow them but, they sure are different for now! Most are way to small yet to tell what they are going to do, except the curlies start to curl as soon as the wing feathers start to come in. I have a much larger percetage of silkie coat types & several of them are curling, all of them blue splash. Really wild!

This last pic is Fancy Pants Pete, my Frizzle Cochin greatgrand papa of this generation.

Will get more pics of the latest two batches up tomorrow. Thanks for your interest!

i would be happy to take him!

thanks heaps for that and i got a question with the frizzles do they have feathered legs

Cave Creek, AZ

Frizzle is not a breed actually, it's a genetic feather mutation and is possible in all/most breeds. Mine have feathered feet because they are Silkie/Frizzled Cochan crosses. I have heard of frizzled polish crossed with silkie also. Good heads, but not as good feathered feet. I've been considering getting a frizzled polish roo to see what it does for my heads bred to my Sizzles.

The thing with the frizzle genetics is, you shouldn't breed curly to curly because you can end up with bald. That's why I have so many roos. If I remember my percentages right, if you breed a frizzle to a smooth feather you will get 25% smooth, 25% smooth with frizzle genes & 50% frizzle. If you breed the frizzles back to a smooth with frizzle genes you get a higher percent of frizzle coats.

Thanks Tamara;

I don't know if Clyd would produce blues breed back to splashes. I have only got blacks out of him so far bred to blues & blacks. I have to go back and reread the materials about reds in the blue genetics. I know it's there in both dogs & horses. I've got a couple of blue & splash possable replacments for Clyd coming up & just find it best to retire him from my program.

Clyd is quite the Roo's Roo. He is an agressive breeder and needs several hens at least. He's a crower but not a fighter. He's not fond of being handled although he's not aggressive about it, just flighty. If you want to cover the cost of shipping him, I'll give him to you in exchange for reports back about what he produces for you.

I have several young frizzle roos & smooth frizzle hens I don't need if anyone has a use for them. I also have a beautiful Buff roo (in pic) that I got as part of a trade that needs a new home also as I don't breed buffs. I named him Ahnold..cause he's buff!

well, all year my kid have asked for silkies. finally got three silky eggs in a swap, only one was any good and died in shell before pipping. if you want to dmail me shipping costs i will see what i can do.

we certainly have nice townhouses for the bantams to live in! and the kids would absolutely LOVE them to pieces. Peter's birthday party is Friday...

i guess they would have been tested for AI, P&T? you need that to ship into Texas...

so Clyde and Ahnold are a definite, send me pics and prices of the others?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i was gona say brown leghorn, but then saw the leg color... what is he?

i mean besides gorgeous!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

yeah!! someone has sizzles besides me kool!! love the pics especially the blue and black girls!!

i have sizzles and bantam frizzled cochins. when i hatched my sizzles out i got 4 different featherings. see if i can explain them all. sizzle(barbed feathers that curl backwards), smooth sizzle(barbed feathers flat like normal feathers), frizzled silkie,( silkie feathering that is shredded but curl backwards) and silkie(they look identical to silkie u can't tell they r crosses). mine r 3rd and 4th generations i'm working on 5th generation crossing them to showgirls and silkies to see what i get from them to work with. if u breed a blue or a black to a splash u will get = blue, black or splash with either color. splash to splash =splash. u can breed frizzle gene to frizzle gene but not more than 2 years of breeding or it will throw curlies. at some point u need to to get the better qualities from them.
hope this helps,
silkie

hi Sarah, looking forward to hearing from you! we are preparing a place for the fellas...

Bremen, KY

actually frizzle genetics work like this. It is a dominant gene, you need one to make one, so all non frizzled babies will not produce a frizzle unless bred to a frizzle. They can not hide the gene, carry it etc. If you double it, it causes horrible problems. So if anyone says you have a smooth feathered bird that is carrying frizzle, they are very wrong.

Katie

(Zone 7b)

Question: I had some red frizzle and thier babys and i hatched 12 it was 7 frizzled and 5 non so the smooth if bred to a smooth would only have smooth??

But if i breed a frizzle to one of the smooth i will get frizzle and smooth??
