Joeswife, I see some beautiful cut flowers, but I don't see any brugs? But why would you want to cut it or dig it up?

joeswife, you have that planted in the ground? I would wait until the last possible minute to cut it off and root the top in a bucket. I mean right before a frost. Are you coming to the midwest roundup near kansas city?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

yes in the ground and by the fence rail too , sheesh, didn't know about a round up... would love to go, what is it all about? cut it?? *gulp* I realy didn't think it would die durig winter since i first saw these in a town called niagra on the lake in canada and they were in the ground there and it is freezing up there.. what do they do wrap them up??

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

maybe they plant them and remove them...not sure. You in zone 5 or 6? Roundup this weekend saturday. You should come! Plenty of plants for everyone you don't even have to bring anything cept a potluck something and some lawn chairs. I can bring you a potted brug.

Oh i read up higher. zone 5 definitely NOT hardy. You can dig it up and pot or bag it for the winter right before frost. Or you can cut it off and root the big stalk all winter in a bucket of water. Either way I would wait until the day of the first frost warning. It will not live outside over winter at all.

I work on this coming saturday dang it .. how long and where at? I am close to Wichita, Ks..and what do you mean by "bag it for winter"? can I cut the tip and wrap the rest and mulch? I have alot of things that winter over here that aren't supposed to because I pile the leaves I rake up about three feet tall all over the gardens.. my border dahlias and red geraniums lasted and came back strong from the winter last year...

It wouldn't hurt to try to mulch once you have removed the top. It would probably have to be fairly deep and rather wide. You might try what a DGer does with his tropical plants (I can't find one of his postings to see where he lives. He uses compost and piles it about 2' - 3' deep. The decomposition produces heat that keeps the roots warm. Dahlias and some geraniums are hardier. Brugs are more semi-tropical to tropical — need protection in zones 7 & 8. In zone 8, most Brugs are root hardy, but die down to the ground. Zone 7 is iffy with some Brugs. Even zone 8 is iffy with some Brugs.

Dig up the plant rootball and all and put it in a plastic bag and bring it in. strip all the leaves off and give it just a little water through the winter. You can pot it and keep it going over the winter if you have a sunny place for it. I still doubt it will come back. It is a very tender tropical. No harm trying though. I would still cut the top off and bring it in and put it in a pail of water. It will root over the winter and you can plant it out in the spring. Still remove all the leaves and cut it to the ground for your pail.
