Brug lovers versus Daturas

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I think they are both lovely and they both smell great! I like dats and brugs both!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

There you go Louise another friend of mine! I agree too! I still owe you that magic powdwr girl, need to sent it soon with the recipe, lol!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh no hurry girl I know you have your pan in many fires lol. I am the patient type. But don't tell my hubby I said that he would laugh and call me a liar lol.

This week coming and i promise!

Cumberland, MD(Zone 6a)

The first brug I bought was not a brug, it was a dat. I like & grow both but the brugs are my favorite, maybe because they are so much more trouble than the dats (what am I thinking!). I guess I take the dats for granted since they are so easy for me. If I join another forum, I will just see a bunch more dats that I will want. I don't have room due to all the brugs hogging all available space.

Clemen, I have 12 brugs, and one double/tripple/quad yellow dat, and I love them both. My dat does not smell real sweet, but it does smell good. Kinda spicy smelling! I bought my dat a t a nursery in San Antonio in June of this year, and in just 2 months it went from a scraggly little 2 foot plant to this! The blooms have all been beautiful. I have had a few double blooms, but most have been triples, and a few quads! It is so amazing to sit and wait for the next bloom to open to see how many skirts she will have?
I have not yet had any buds on my brugs but am anxiuosly waiitng for them!!!
All my plants are in pots with miracle grow soil, and I use Miracle grow fertilizer once a week.

This year I had a white Dat that I almost believed was a brug! The flowers were almost 8-10 inches long, single white and smelled heavenly. I have no clue which variety it is, it has spread all over my walkway (laying flat) and has bloomed for most of the past 6 weeks. I have lots of brugs and they seem to grow and bloom better in the shade for me. The dats don't get enough sun in my yard.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Linda,
you are lucky to have a good thumb with the dats. Mine have all grown this summer but it was thanks to the help of quite a few gardeners here at DG. It was so hard to have them germinate that quite a few people just send me the plants all grown, lol. I have learned to love them just as the brugs, although now that I see they have tons of seedpods, they have stopped flowering somewhat and the flowers seemed to have gotten alot smaller.

Linda Kay,

I have had great luck with the brugs including cuttings that I received this year in the Spring. I cannot believe that they are all blooming. I use bloom plus fertilizer for them, it has a high middle Number of phosphate, over 50 and I use it weekly along with the fish emulsion. Your white datura is just lovely!

Ibartoo,
I now which dat you are talking about but I do not know the name. It spreads like a blanket right and the flowers are so big they are just amazing. I have seen that one on one of my neighbors yards, I only wish I could go and steal at least one seedpod, lol, For some reason or another my brugs bloom better in the sun than the shade and that is the contrary of yours. How weird is that!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Clemen I have the common white sprawly one too if you want seeds. Funny thing I had some pop on the side of my driveway in the gravel and they are flowering. Got absolutely no water except rain and they look better than all the others lol. They are tough plants.

Chesapeake Beach, MD

I have grown the purple and yellow varieties and the seeds came up in about 4 days like tomato plants do. Much easier to germinate than brugs but I don't think I will grow them again next year because they may promote viruses in brugs.

I love the flowers and the plants bloom prolifically over the season (always in bloom) but if you break some of the plant off they smell awful. Also, they have a good fragerance but nothing to rival brugs.

Since they weren't supposed to be hardy in my area (7b) the mother plant didn't come back but to my surprise, I found a couple of volunteers from the seed pods I didn't harvest.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Billie I have had the white ones come back from the roots here. Datura metel I believe.

Chesapeake Beach, MD

The ones I had come back from seeds were the triple purple ones.

Am I correct in understanding that you can take in dats and overwinter like brugs?

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Louise and Billie, so I do not have to save those dat seeds??? I thought they would not survive the harsh NY winter, now I am confused!

Chesapeake Beach, MD

Clemen, I'm not sure. We had a truly mild winter last year and I am hazarding a guess that is why the seeds survived. I wouldn't chance it with all my seeds. Keep some as back up but experiment and see if any survive.

I have some young dats and I am going to experiment and see if I cut them off at ground level and mulch (8 - 10 inches) if they will come back.

I have always grown mine in pots which of course are above ground and I found the volunteer plants growing in the pots of other plants that were surrounding the pot with the last years dats in it.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Billie good luck mulching them, your zone is just a little milder than mine. I will still bring the pots inside and keep the seed pots in paper bags and hopefully I will be able to grow more dats in the spring and Summer, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, hopefully i will get them to germinate, my big problem over here in NY!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Clemen I picked all my purple seeds so I cannot say whether they reseed. The white ones pop up allllllllll over the place. I gave away close to fifty plants this year and killed off hundreds from reseeding white ones. If I every have enough of the purple to let them fall on the ground I will let you know if they reseed. lol

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Jezzz Louise so they survive the winter, it is hard to believe, you know that I had such a hard time getting them to thrive and germinate! So you are giving me hopes for next season, dats that is. As far as brugs go, I got some seeds from a DG friend this summer and now i can just see a tiny bruggie comng up, still you can see the seed shell, These seeds are so temperamental, if that word exist in the English dictionary, English NOt my first language, lol, but I love you all!

If it still has the seed coat attached I heard if you keep misting them it helps them detach without breaking the head off.

Pawleys Island, SC

Clemen, I will gladly share some seeds with you from my white one. I just love it. I would love to have some other colors too, but my seedlings didn't make it. I guess mine do better in the shade because it is just so hot. I am very close to the beach too so that may have something to do with it needing protection from the sun.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Ibartoo, I will have plenty of seeds and will glady trade with you too. I will have triple yellow and purple dat.

You are a true expert Luoise!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Okay I am confused... I have had old fashioned moon flowers for years and they look like taters55 plant.. I collect the round prickly seed pods and give them in my seed gift bags every year, and I also tranplant them in the spring when they show up where I don't want them, they are huge white trumpets, smeell lovely ad the bees love them too. Is this a datura plant then?
