So to all of those brug lovers, how come you are not in the datura forum, they are similar, but not as popular. I've only had one brug for many years until DG, I got cuttings from a very dear gardener, thanks to him, he knows who he is, will not say his name so i do not get him in trouble, so why you brug people are not active in the datura section???? Your thoughts would be appreciated! i am growing Daturas now, Clemen
Brug lovers versus Daturas
To me, Datura is not as appealing as Brugmansia. Dat's flowers last for a shorter time than Brug's. Brugs grow much taller than Dats. Dat's flowers face upright and Dat's are downward facing. Brugs have larger flowers. I've never smelled any fragrance from a Dat that comes close to the Brug scents.
Just my opinion. ;-)
Brugs don't make pests of themselves as Daturas tend to do if the seed is allowed to mature. I also tend to associate Dats with Jimson Weed, an invasive weed around here.
T, thanks for your answer, I just happen to like both flower types, one upwards, one downwards, good observations though, since i do not have any experience with the "devil ones" versus the "angel one" So now I wonder, are the angel ones named angels because of their smell?? Clemen
i love dats but cant seem to get them to germinate for me. brugs i love too but dont seem to like me either.
Betttd, what does the watsom weed looks like? You know I am in NY, weather colder than yours, so Datura seeds are not a problem, neither are the brugs, they die in the winter, unless they are brought indoors....Imzaadi, I wish they would love you , and prayers if you have new babies growing Clemen
Angel's trumpets point down from above, Devil trumpets point up from below.
That is the reason for the names, and not the scent, although the scent can be heavenly!
Clemen, here's some information on Jimson Weed, Datura stramonium

I stopped growing datura a few years ago, I had so much problem with them getting to a nice big blooming size them getting a fungus and dieing in the middle of summer. I live in northern NY but found they became weeds. Last year we still had them coming up in the garden. I do like them, and grew them for years, but I was so afraid my brugs might get the what ever it was that was killing the dats I stopped growing them.
Thanks for the link Betty! That is the flower that I see growing on a tree bark every year. The datura I am growing is double purple and double yellow. Let's see what happens, I think I am not going to put them in the ground, just pots, in order to prevent them from becoming weeds. I have seen the seed pods, they are big with lots and lots of seeds!
I love them both. I went out to my porch one night last summer and was startled by the strong perfume that I smelled. It was as though some woman with too much on had just walked by. I tracked it down to my triple yellow. It was heavenly. That being said so does my Dr. Suess and some other brugs as well. I like the purple of the daturas and the long trumpet shape and "whiskers" of the brugs. Both have a lot to offer.
Anne
(and I do watch the datura thread, too. lol)
Anne, so I guess the Daturas have a smell too! I was not aware of it. Thaks for the info. I transplanted the little babies to bigger pots, and two of them, I planted in the ground. Clem
Yes they do. I don't think that my purple/white one has a fragrance but the yellow definitely does.
Anne
So now I will not only be dreaming of my new Daturas but of nice fragrance, thanks Anne!
No prob. I'm a great enabler.
Anne
(pssst, I have seeds)
Annie, you are so bad, why are you telling me you have seeds? Want to trade some? or send you postage? You know I was in College Station some 20 + something years ago, my cousins went to a university there, I remember. At the time, I was not in college, but went to a boarding school in Dallas, so it was easy for me to go an visit the cousins. I really liked College Station and I thought it was such a young town, maybe because of the students there! Clemen
I love both. I just discovered the datura metel double purple last year and i think one is coming up that I direct sowed a couple months ago. This is so cool. I've got a bunch or brug versicolor plants that I started from cuttings and a couple unknown rooted cuttings from a trade. I've want to start datura lilac de fleur I think I will direct sow under my mini spray irrigation since starting in containers they just rotted. Love them all. We had a particularly cold May and My large brug versicolor isn't blooming yet I can't wait for those flowers Does anyone know when they start blooming in zone 9? This one seems to be a little stingy with flowering I wonder why. I has several flushes of blooms but some times the time inbetween in just a little to long for my liking. I've noticed some brugs flower more heavily but the texture of the petals on mine is very delicate, I really love it.
Wnderearth, try giving some fertilizer, I use blooms plus on mine weekly in the summer, and it never stops blooming. Good luck with all of the seeds you are planting and your new cuttings. Two of the cuttings that I got from someone this Spring already have leaves, it is great!
I am sure everything will look lovely on your yard once they all bloom, Clem
I started some double yellow, double purple, tripple white and lilac de fleur. All are doing great. I have several buds on the lilac de fleur and still have them in 1 gallon pots. I have planted some in the ground and some in plantings in large pots. I am so excited to see the blooms. My brugs are doing better, coming out of the cool garage and not much light the leaves are still a little yellow, but coming on strong. I am fertilizing the brugs about once a week and am going to put some Millers Rose Food in the pots.
My ree, how cold is your garage in the winter? and what is Miller rose Food? Clem
cm, the garage gets to almost freezing. The plants have overwintered well in there. I did put a 60 watt bulb in there during the coldest days in January. This year I am going to try to make a little greenhouse in the garage so I can keep it a little warmer and have grow lights. The only light was the 3' x 6' south window.
Millers Rose Food is from Millers Beef Company about 20 miles away. It is a huge meat processing company. They are now making many products for the garden from the waste, they also truck some things in to add to what they have. They have come up with a fertilizer that really gets the plants growing, vegies and flowers. It smells terrible for a couple of days then it is ok. Mine are looking the best yet. Many buds.
I am also using the 'recipe' from the brug forum.
Thanks for the info myree, interesting that you leave them in an almost frozen garage! That fetilizer sounds mighty good, hey if it smells for a little while, but is good for the plants, go for it. That's like when I put cow manure or fish emulsion, my darling hubbie complaints, but I just don't listen to him lol. Clem
I have had both my daturas seemed to die fast in Raleigh and I have no seeds right now. I will try to grow them here sooner or later. my burgs grow great in pot and I just put pots out in the yard and keep them fert. and watered and watch them grow.I am gonna try and plant some in the ground here at the coast to see if they will regrow next year with out me haveing to keep them in pots.
Lavina.
Lavina, wish you good luck! i hope the brugs won't die if you leave them in the ground. i am in the same zone as you, and the brugs die over here. I'll be carefull. Clem
I tried to grow datura seeds, but didnt realize that they like cold dark to germinate. Thought that was interesting since brugs are the opposite lol!
My brug seeds germinated really fast and 3/5 have made it :o) whoo hoo!
I love daturas and have them every year. The sprawly white one has the best fragrance to me. I now have 11 little brug seedlings so we shall see how that one goes. So far so good.
I've never grown any from seeds, the daturas I ordered ( 4 of them), two are in pots, two in the ground, and the ones in the ground do not look so good. I think I am going to pot them again.
clem.. the weather has been cold and damp.. are both the potted and in the ground ones in full sun.. nottoo late for sowing seeds.. Imight havesome here... Ihad one white one with apicotee edgeing of yellow.. seeds seemed to recreate this about 25% of the time.. otherwise it was white.. and some seeds purple triple flowers .. Missouri marble I think.. I just planted a bunch at mothers.. in between her brugs..Gordon
Lavina,
Just a thought. I live in zone 9 and my brugs lose all thier leaves and usually a few inches of stems. They are borderline hardy here. My guess is that zone 7 is going to be a strech but if you don't mind e
experimenting. Ahh toddlers! They litterally push my buttons.hehe gotta go : )
Gordon, the ones in the pots are where i live in Garden City, in pots, part sun/part shade. The ones on the ground are in my house in Freeport, LI, on a canal, full sun, maybe they do not like the salty weather, sand/dirt, I don't know. Tonight, before I left and watered everything, oh my they are getting smaller and sadder, and just think that I spent $11 for each, I must save them. I will lift them from where they are on Wednesday, I cannot do it tomorrow, need to go to the office. I would not mind trying seeds, if you have some, let me know. Thank you Gordon, And yes the weather has been strange. Today it was too windy, could not even make it out on the boat. Anyway, Thanks for thinking of me! My address is on the exchange and if I can send you something, it would be my pleasure. Your advise is always so on the dot. Clemen
I hoped to get mine outta pots and in the ground this week end but oh well maybe one afternoon this week and maybe they will be ok I have lots of pine straw to mulch them with. Mine are so small compared to the pictues I see on here. I can hardley wait till they bloom.
Lavina
Lavina, you are putting brugs in the ground not daturas right?
Burgs in the ground and 1 datura.
A few years ago I had Metal what ever and it did great at the foot of my steps in Raleigh. We will see how this white one does and I just got it from a neighbor yesterday.
Lavina
Good luck wit them!
Clem..just d mailme your address... I'm not sure where the address exchange is...I've some of the purple also I think... interested ??
Gordon
I have a bunch of brugs and quite a few Dats. Dats flower 10 x as much here as brugs. I have found a new one Datura Inoxia that is very fragrant and needs a weedeater or roundup to kill. I like them all.
Jim
Good point Jim, did not know that! Clem
clemen, i am an avid true angle trumpet. i'm no way downing datura's. but to me, they r not in the same ballgame. not near as pretty. they r what we used to call hogweeds when i was a kid. just my opinion though.
Hi wolfie friend, I do love both angels and devils, but agree that the angels are prettier!, well it depends, there are beautifull dats too and lovely fragrances. Thanks for reviving my thread! Clem
