Hosta Pics

I think the rogue lily is an Asiatic, don't know for sure. Glad to know they grow in any light. I love Asiatics but they multiply like rabbits, i'm always giving away the babies from the nursery I have.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

If it is an Asiatic, which I am not doubting, the strain I have has several shades of pink thru white...It seems like everytime I relocate something, there is a baby in the dirt or in the mulch!

Victor, I was looking for that Mayapple for a few hours...any luck finding the plant for sale, and not just the seed? I did find one vendor but they are in Canada. Let me know if you have any more luck than I did!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Louise. I added more toad lilies this spring and once the cimicifuga mature it should be great. I would like to widen that bed, but the kids play there the most.

Here, Thom.

Thank you. Now I will have to put together a $35 order...lol.

Al,
You mean human children? Isn't that the biggest pain, when you say "well, kids, from here to there is going to be a new flower bed" and they look up at you with those little faces and say "but where will we do cartwheels/hold cheerleading practice/play volleyball/play softball/camp out, Mom/Dad/Step-parent?" What can you say?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

You can say, "Now you'll be digging, weeding, deadheading, mulching... Muha-ha-ha-ha"

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Harper!! Offer to buy nice pink gardening gloves!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

That's the least I could do! I'd buy shovels and pick axes, the works!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I usually tell them to buy their own house and then they can do whatever they want!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I think "June" has to be the perfect Hosta. Except for that pesky HVX thing with the Halcyon family. Mine is from a local nursery, but I think I am going to go ahead and order what I hope is a clean one from a reputable source, because I'd hate to not have this hosta in my garden, even temporarily.

Do any of you guys' kids actually like working in the garden? I don't have kids myself, but I can remember having zero interest in it when I was a kid..I had zero interest until the last couple years, actually.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I love June and have it in various light conditions right up to full sun. It looks great in all. My kids like it up to a point. They each have their own small garden in a half whiskey barrel planter.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

My kids will help out now and then, they like cutting flowers - not sure if that is really helping though.

That's a nice idea, Victor. I think I was turned off to gardening at a young age when we planted lima beans in margarine containers in Elementary school. Of course mine didn't sprout!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh yes, who didn't do that one?! I think mine was a dud also. Here's June from the other day. You can see how they're brighter and more gold toward the front where they get more sun.

Gorgeous! Yep, it really is the perfect hosta.
How old are those?

While I failed at Lima beans, I did have more success planting sunflowers from the seeds I took out of my hamster's food.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They've been divided once - two years ago. Before that - had them about four years.

Do you have Paul's Glory? It's a nice one but gets pretty big. Very thick substantial puckering leaves.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I do, and I'm afraid it will be too big. I just bought it last year, and it grew tremendously in just one season...I'm a little scared to see what it will do this season. Darn slugs got to it before the leaves started to thicken up, too. Hm, I wonder if I could replace Parhelion with that one....do you think PG would look ok with a few hours of afternoon sun? I hate the bleached out look.

Do you do anything to contain your Creeping Jenny or do the other plants come up thru it just fine in the Spring?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Just a few hours should be okay. Jenny is no problem - I love her! Plants come right through.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Here is 'Embroidery'...it's a really unusual hosta. The leaves are all undulating, and there is almost no rhyme nor reason to the way it grows. I won this as an auction last year on ebay, so this is the first real year with it.

That's good to know, since it really grows like crazy. I have it planted on the right half of this bed, and I wasn't sure if it would start to inhibit the ferns and hosta.

I googled Paul's Glory, and it is one of those that bleaches almost white in some sun..not sure if I have enough to do that. It gets dappled shade all day where I have it now, and is golden chartruese by summer's end. I think I may end up putting Stained Glass in place of Parhelion, and then PG where SG was.

That must be one of the "hot" hosta to have, Hem, because I keep hearing of that one this year. That's the first pic I've seen. Do you have Manhattan? That's one I bought last year on impulse, and it's also supposed to be a very busy looking one, with lots of puckers and ripples.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I know it's unusual, it doesn't grow very quickly, and it's sort of flimsy. The thing I like about it, besides being sort of pie crusted, seer suckered, and the edges undulate like they do, it's also has a bit of variegation...not sure if the pic that I post it shows it or not, but the outside edge is a darker green than the inside of the leaf...I was not aware of this at the time that I bid on it. If I remember it was about $45 or so last year...I think Jim has it for sale at Jim'sHostas...not sure how much he charges though. I do not have Manhattan. I came up with a list, and have been working on that list. There are about 20 or so on it, some cheaper, under $10, some not so...lol. I'm going to attempt to stick to my hosta guns, and work just on the list that I compiled. Try...try...and try...lol.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I love that bed Noreaster. I've been wanting a birch, but I need to find a spot for it.

(Zone 4a)

I have 2 different kinds of hosta's but I don't know their names...

Noreaster- my son LOVES helping me, but of course all he wants to plant are BLUE flowers. He's 5 but he'll dig holes and push the empty wheelbarrow, water. He knows the name of a lot of the flowers too. I'm hoping I can teach my almost 2 yr old to be the same way.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Blue Flowers? Thats my kinda boy!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Somehow I knew you would say that, Celeste!
Taelar loves to garden, too, and knows a lot of plant names. But, she likes the worms the best!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

My 14 yo DD#2 loves to choose pink flowers - annuals, perennials, roses, azaleas, she doesn't care or even notice as long as they are PINK. We buy her a few and then she forgets about them. One year we spent a lot on annuals SHE was going to plant in HER window box and ... she forgot about them. I was able to resuscitate some but not all. This year I let her choose one (1) pink impatiens from the flat of mixed impatiens.

But understand, this kid has been pressed into service "helping" me with flower gardens since she was young - well, obviously, she's still young! She's proud of my garden, but it's MY garden, not HER garden. Although she does talk about what kind of garden she wants to have when she grows up and has a house of her own. I sure didn't think about gardening at all, either way, when I was fourteen!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Here is another favorite...not sure if this is 'Big Daddy' or not...it's a pretty large hosta, and the cupping is HUGE sometimes.

Thanks for sharing all these wonderful hosta pictures, everyone. Just what I needed - more temptation to buy more plants!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thom I have just planted Big Daddys and they have longer smoother leaves.
