Hi all,
Was just wondering what program for the computer is needed for labeling seeds. I need a more professional look than just printing it on a sticky note...LOL
Any and all ideas welcome!!
Printing labels
I use Word.
I've also used Avery's web site to create labels.

Thanks!!
So, when you print up a sheet of labels can you make each label different, or just print a few at a time?
I can sense this is going to be another long learning curve...
I've actually done it both ways.
I think when i've used WORD, i have done individual labels, like for my hostas.
and i know i used Avery for my Christmas card labels ... i think with that one, i imported my data for my mailing list [so that again, would be individual]
for doing all of the same info on each label ... i do think that is easier. I've done it -- but honestly can't recall the occasion.
You can do it both ways.

I use MS Word and first create a blank "table" for each size of Zip-lock baggie I want to label.
I just tuck the labels inside the baggies: no tape no glue.
The lines (Borders) that mark each cell let you know how much text will fit on each label.,
I print double-sided, and create 2 tables for each 8.5" x 11" page I'm going to print.
My blank template reminds me how they line up: the left-page row is numbered 1-2-3-4
and the right-page rows are numbered 4-3-2-1.
A little juggling, like adjusting the left margin 0.03" at a time, will let all the lines line up exactly on both sides of the page. You can have twice as much text for each baggie. Using a 10-point font, I can record most of what I know on one label.
I usually put the common name at the top, 14-point bold or larger.
The Latin name can be italicized, and I usually make it 9-point.
Let's see if I can attach a sample JPG ...

I do similarly and print onto just paper*, but in an avery label template that makes horizontal labels, 30 per page. This size fits easily into a 2"x3" ziplock baggie. I can't remember what the avery number is (the list is in Word under Labels). I print just the basics - Common name & latin name across the top, special thing (color, height, whatever is the special aspect) in the middle, and my screenname and the seed date (G 10 for gathered in 2010) across the bottom.
*I tuck them into the ziplocks too. That way it's really really easy to reuse the baggie - sticky labels often tear the plastic, and they just cost more to make.
If I'm doing a whole bunch of packets at once, I computer print all of it, but I also keep a sheet of blanks handy that just has my screenname and the current year printed on them for quicky random packets.
I'm most proud of the 'double-sided' feature of my tables. I like verbose labels! I always record sowing depth, "thin to" distance, +/- stratification, anuual/perrenial/bi and season to sow, though sowing methods sometimes have multiple options.
Thanks for reminding me I should include "color". And "partial shade". Best soil type. Watering requriments ....
Now I have to decide whether to use a smaller font, or shop for 8.5"x11" baggies! :-)
