DAILY PICS VOL. 106

Klamath River, CA

Peek-A-Boo........................I'm beginning to think that the white powder some one sprinkled on my thistle has something to do with why all the birds like it.

Very nice pics adel! Grosbeak is so cute!

Gary I love the Sandpiper!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I just love all the yellow and orange bird pics from everyone. Great colors!

Love the arctic tern too - don't they have an ability to fly extremely far or something like that? Something sticks out in my mind that they are very long flyers.

Hi all, gee, I have a lot of pictures to look at!

I want to share with you two new visitors to my backyard, the first from last Thursday -- a Rose Breasted Grosbeak!

He is gorgeous!

The second newcomer, from this morning. A Red Headed Woodpecker!

Red Headed, once more.

Not sure who his little friend is.

Here is another first for me. While I was outside working in my rose bed, I noticed this Robin kept going to the cherry crunch suet cake.

This morning, he returned, and I had my camera ready.

I never before saw a Robin eating suet.

Granny - you are definitely having a black, white and red day!

A first ever for me - an indigo bunting! I was so excited to see it! It's a terrible photo because it was on a bad angle through glass and with glare, but I'm sure it's an indigo bunting. On mother's day no less! What a treat! I sent a photo to my mother too!

Yesterday I put out Grape Jelly for the Orioles instead of Peach Preserves and they ignored it......................the Red Fox loved it.

Granny Grunt, it just may be that the 'cherry' in 'cherry crunch suet' is what your robin was going after. I've never seen robins go after my suet, but then again mine aren't usually of the gourmet variety that yours is.

A few years back I bought some dried grubs which I put out on a brick in the garden. It didn't take long for the robins to find them. I couldn't believe how many of those grubs the robin stuffed in its beak before flying back to feed its nestlings.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Great shots this morning, folks!

Hatfield, PA(Zone 6b)

Here's a Mothers' Day pic from my archives. It shows a surrogate mother watching over two robin eggs while the real mother is out hunting for worms. Actually, though, the real nest was abandoned the previous year, the eggs are artificial, and the surrogate mother is a praying mantis hand puppet.

Thymewarp - that is hilarious!!! What a shot! Very creative!

Yep - they breed in the arctic, and winter right down to the antarctic. One from over here (northeast England) reached Melbourne, Australia, 22,000 km by sea, when only about 4 or 5 months old.

Song Sparrow.

but I'm sure it's an indigo bunting

Yep!

Thanks for the confirmation on the tern Resin. What an amazing feat for a young bird.

I had a special moment earlier, a Baltimore oriole came very close to my front window!

I think he wanted to tell me that the red-headed woodpecker was visiting me too!

Super pics everyone!

GG, Congrats on the beautiful Grosbeak and the Red-headed Woodpecker is so cool!

Claire, great pics! Congrats on the Indigo Bunting!

thyme, Thats too funny!

adel, I love all the wildlife at your place!

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Great pictures folks.

Thanks everyone. Thanks Resin for the Id on the Song Sparrow.

Thymewarp, that Cherry Crunch was definitely a mistake on my part. All of the birds absolutely love it. In fact, if these characters keep eating like they have been the past week, I am going have to come out of retirement to continue feeding them.

Pelle, I am really going to do my best to keep that woodpecker coming back to my place!

Same goes for the Grosbeak.

I haven't posted in a while (moving has a tendency to keep you occupied!) but I had to share this pic of a Little Blue Heron.

Love the Blue Heron!

Rose, I DID send you some Blue Jays. Please let me know if you would like more.

They are eating me out of house and home.

However, I am really pumped! Three new birds to my area in a week. Two today, the Red Headed Woodpecker and an Indigo Bunting. Sorry about the quality of the Bunting's shot, but the sky had darkened and it was beginning to storm.

GG: So what if the shots are a little fuzzy. Just look at the intense blue of your bunting! Oooh. Besides, he probably likes it at your house and will hang around til a sunnier day. :)

Awww, very cute!

Southeastern, CT(Zone 6a)

How cool! Is the nest that out in the open or did you have to hold the tree with one hand and take the picture with the other one?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I did gymnastics to get that pic! I was holding branches with my elbow, camera with one hand, steadying myself with other hand, and on tip-toes, and getting ticks on me all at the same time! But I am determined to document my resident baby birds!

So HOT here the Grackles were all holding their beaks open.

I've been told by several people that Orioles like grape jelly, so I got some and put it out. As was posted The Orioles ignored it, but the Fox thought it was great. This morning I put out Peach Preserves and grape jelly. The Orioles ate the peach and................
