What have you bought so far ?? Part 6

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I agree. Buying from any shop where they don't take care of the plant can be so disappointing. It's not good to deprive the plants of water, have them bounce back and then allow them to dry out again. It results in stressed plants.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

It was so sad at Home Depot to see all those wilted full grown plants, like looking at animals in the zoo.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

The girls and I went to Home Depot yesterday and the plants looked just a shade above OK. I guess somebody cares about them at the HD near us. We went for a tomato plant, a pepper plant and some annuals. We came home with a tomato plant (Big Boy), a pepper plant that I don't remember the name of right now, and some impatiens and dianthus.

We wanted more dianthus this year because the ones we planted last year came back looking very full and healthy for this season.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor is that a recently received clematis from Debbie? I can't believe how many stems there are. How did you plant it - sideways. I has usually taken me a couple years to have that much growth.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes Bill - just planted it last month! I plant them at a 45 degree angle with the crown about 1 1/2 to 2 inches below the soil.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

wow thought I was to I have never had that kind of success. may have to dig up a couple and re-plant.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They don't all turn out that great, Bill. I would not disturb it. Maybe that one had an extra big root mass. I've planted some from Debbie that only put up one or two stems too.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have one i planted in a container and buried in the gound - make that three - and all need to be put in the ground so I'll do it with those. i know i have placed all of them in 45 degree angle.
Regardless you are going to have on profuse clem.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It will probably overwhelm the shrub it's supposed to grow on!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

ok i went to mahoney's in winchester to look for two plants. a sagae hosta and that yellow barberry to hold a purple clem. came hoe with red october hosta, snowball and cardinal viburum, and a picky winky hydrangea.
Can't buy a barberry in MA any longer as they have been deemed invasive. And i apparently will need to stop off at mason hollow nursery later in june to get the sagae. which will lead to others.
Victor when you come down to the reunion mahoneys still had the other four Shirazz JM. They are in full sun and look spectatcular!!. just a littlw tease.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That is tempting! I would not put in any more barberries but I'm not removing my mature ones. I have a spray that supposed to make the birds not want to eat the berries.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

What kind of dianthus do you want, Candyce? i have Bath's Pink (which FINALLY bloomed for me this year) and Firewitch to spare, and then there is the immortal annual dianthus, which seems to root well.

Thomaston, CT

I had good luck this winter with my dianthus, too, amy & Candyce---it's blooming very nicely. Bill--nice photos--the area looks great! I finally planted all my annuals, except for the marigolds in the veggie garden. And my container plants. And maybe something for the perennial garden I am now weeding. Gee--guess I'll have to go shopping again--but definately not to Walmarts or HD---their plants are stressed, & neglected. Glad they don't sell dogs!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Amy, did you give me dianthus before? I think I forgot to plant it. :-] Sorry.....

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Amy and Robin,

Anna and I have some dark magenta and some pink variegated Dianthus right now, so anything that would go with those would be awesome to own. I thank you both in advance, especially if you have some that are more pink and more white. I suppose that I could look up those names and see what colors they are ... but, well. Perhaps I will in another hour or so when I am fully awake.

I bought these Primrose Saturday. I left them out Sat. Sun. and Mon. night. Last night stuck them in the GH.

I will put everything in the GH tonight. I think we are going to get bit by Jack.

Wise move, Sherrie. We can wish all we want for nice continual warm weather but Mother Nature always has the last word.

Rushing the season seldom, if ever, works. It's not worth the loss of time, effort and money as well as the plants that will never flourish and never do as well as when we treat them as they want and give them the warm soil they want.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Wise words, pirl.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i gave lots of people Bath's Pink last year. i was so annoyed by it, 'cause it growed and growed, but never bloomed more than one or two flowers. Well, this year, it finally is REALLY blooming...
yay.

i love the Firewitch. It is bright and blooms like crazy.

Amy:

I just looked at your Trade List. I have nothing you want *sigh*.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

o, i meant to see what my dianthus looks like. You can have whatever you want.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Cool!
I'll take you up on that.
Thanks.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Bill, that's interesting about the barberry in Mass. I have a bush in my yard, and every Spring I weed out its' seedlings along with the crabapple seedlings. I wonder if crabapple is considered invasive, too?

Sherrie, I just picked up eight primroses at my local WalMart today - half off! Got two gold, two "blue", two hot pink, and two red.

I was looking at Bluestone's sale online today - think I'm gonna have to indulge!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Go to the Bluestone Sale ,I doubt there is anything left after I was there, my plants come this week. LOL

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

took it all huh, JoAnn?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Good morning Debby.I bought all the hostas I will need for my shade garden, plus more Campanula porschnka(sp) ,Monarde Raspberry and Red,
4 Balamcanda
Heliopsis
Anthemis
Aster pale lavender and purple
two kinds of Lamium
Tierella pink brushes
Tirella cordifolia
All together w/ 25 hostas the list is 70 plants.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Wow, guess you did clean them out! Glad you are less frosty this morning.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I hope we have seen the last of the scarry 30's

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Not us! We are teetering at the 32 degree mark this morning.
I've been outside to set the hoses for watering. So far, all looks to be OK.

Its too cold to even think of going out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Well, we haven't had enough rain to make the gardens all pretty. If Mother Nature won't get up to provide the water, than I must, right?

OK - true, You win.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I agree - it's cold! But the temp has gone up 8 degrees in the last hour, so it feels just a bit more comfortable out there. Not that it's warm by any means. But, it's getting better.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I know this company sells pro-mix http://homeharvest.com/pottingmixes.htm . I've ordered products from them before. One of my local nurseries sells pro-mix as well. Perhaps you should try the local private nurseries rather than the large commercial ones?

Here's another, although I've not ordered from them. http://www.greenhousemegastore.com/products.asp?dept=1139

Went to check waht was left of my Campanuls Joan Elliot and noticed a late emerging lily comming up through a new Columbine.
Why don't lilies ever come up where they are supposed to?
I put a stake in the hole when I planted the bulb, now the sprout is a foot away.
yep I moved the columbine

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

When i was looking for Pro-Mix, my nursery said it is just a brand name. i bought a different kind of "grower's medium" and it seems to be working out just fine. $27 for the bale.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it appeats the small Carnival JM I purchased for Forest Farm is a gooner. It arrived ok, then went down hill daily. It was a small one year old. I called them yesterday and explained the situation and asked if they could give me a credit towards a larger one. they had to discuss and called me back today and a three year old will be in the mail.

Also had some lavendar from high country gardens die and replacements are being sent. Don't know if anyone orders from them - my order was a mixed bag. they advertise these premium pots with larger roots systems. Only half the the order I received had fully rooted.

Also order from miller's nursery a concord grape and 4 variety of rasberries. Grape was bare root and still hasn't budded and 1 rasberrie variety and a single haven't budded. they told me to wait and see - it has been three weeks.

Wish there was spell check here.
