Hi Dave,
I keep finding one of my watched forums, European Gardening, flagged as having new messages, and when I get there it hasn't, I've already read all the recent ones, earlier the same day. It isn't happening with any of the other forums I have on watch, once read they stay that way until something new actually happens.
I normally use an IE browser, but today I've been using Firefox and it just happened again in that too. Is there an oddity with that forum or is my computer going mad????
New Messages in a Forum in error
Is it possible that there were posts made and then deleted by admins before you got there? Could have been someone had posted something like an ad for their business that was against the rules and admins had removed it already by the time you got there. Either that or home page was loading a slightly older version, to fix that hold the shift key and click on the refresh button in your browser and that will force it to load the most recent version (a good way to know if you have the most recent version is to look at the time in the upper right corner of the screen--if it matches the real time then you've got the latest version)
Thanks for the suggestions Ecrane - it can't have been an older version this last time because if it were it would have also had new messages in the Daves Garden forum watching section, as that was the last place I'd been from the home page, and it didn't.
I do clean the whole cache fairly regularly as I have trouble with Ancestry.co.uk if I don't, and thats my other big hobby!
Its possible admins had been in there, but this has happened on 4 separate days, and always that forum not one of the others, so it isn't totally likely. I'm puzzled!
If it's been 4 days in a row I doubt if it's posts getting deleted, if it were a non-subscribers forum then maybe that's possible but since it's subscribers only that's highly unlikely. I still think it could be loading an older version of the home page--I've noticed that when my browser decides to load an old version of the home page, there were times when it would go back several hours in time, so it's possible it went back to a time when there weren't new posts yet in the other forum you were watching. It is weird that it's just happening with that one forum so there could be something else funny going on of course, but to rule this one out, next time you notice your thread watcher is telling you there's a new post in that forum, before you click on it to go to the forum, look up in the right corner of the screen and see what time it thinks it is.
The one other possibility that I just thought of...if you have some of the threads in that forum in your thread watcher, and you go directly to those threads from the home page when you have new posts there (rather than first going to the forum page, then clicking on the thread), then the forum watcher doesn't realize you've visited the forum, so it'll still tell you that there are new messages there.
That last suggestion is a distinct possibility. I'll note which way I look at things for a while and see what happens. Thanks
