DAILY PICS VOL. 105

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Excellent photos, everyone.

On Sunday, I encountered an Indigo Bunting and a Blue Grosbeak in close proximity to each other. Unfortunately, because of depth of field, one wound up blurred. The Blue Grosbeak is the blurry one. And, I only got one photo of the Indigo Bunting.

You all have been moving WAAAAY to fast for me. lol. Nanny, I love the brown thrashers, and have never seen them at my feeders either. I usually hear the rustling leaves before I see them, they are so funny scratching and hopping around in the leaves....

I know there are always hawks around, but they seldom visit and perch while I've got my camera in hand. This beauty landed in the honey locust tree this AM and then flew off to the plum tree. I can't give a positive ID, but I suspect it was a sharp-shinned the way he maneuvered among the tree branches. Not surprisingly, the rest of the backyard birds went scrambling on its arrival. I can't be sure, but I think he went away empty-taloned this time.

Looks too big to be a Sharp-shinned.

I would say its a Coopers Hawk. Nice pic!

BTW, Do you know about the new Bird Identification Forum here at Daves?

Theres an announcement w/ the link lower down in a post.

Super pic of the Grosbeak Mrs Ed!

Nanny, Love the pic of the Catbird !

Hatfield, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks, pelletory for the info about the forum and link as I'm not yet familiar with the new Bird ID Forum. I joined Daves last May, but just became an active member last week. I see now that I certainly wasted the past year by not getting involved earlier.

I certainly wouldn't argue about it possibly being a Coopers as the red-tail is one of the few I feel I can ID with certainty.

Here's an action shot of the hawk leaving the locust and heading to the plum tree.

This one thinks it"s a flag pole sitter.................for you youngsters out there, flag pole sitting was a fad that predates tree sitting by many years (1924-1929 ).

I haven't a clue as to what this one has been up to.

Nanny ... Thanks for starting the new thread.

All I can say is, "WOW" ... It looks like everyone is getting lots of new and returning birds. Geat pictures everyone!

As always, I'm overrun with doves and house finches. Yesterday I got a shot of some doves at my ground feeder. The picture quality isn't very good; but it shows the 3 different varieties of doves that are eating me out of house and home (Inca, White-Winged, and Mourning).

This Curve-Billed Thrasher caught my attention because its beak was almost twice as long as usual. Close-up, you can see that the beak crosses instead of coming together normally; but the thrasher didn't seem to have any problems eating.

Just for comparison, here's an old picture of another Curve-Billed Thrasher with a normal beak.

You are all working overtime and have enjoyed looking thru all the birds being posted.

It finally quit raining and took a few in poor light today.

Quoting:
This [hawk] landed in the honey locust tree

Agree with Cooper's - stout bill, rounded tail. An immature (1 year old) from the streaks on the breast.
