Buena Creek Gardens has sold. For any of you who love to go there, the good news is that it will remain as a nursery. Steve and Donna were there on Friday for the Spring sale, but I don't know if they'll be putting in any more appearances before heading off to new adventures.
Buena Creek Gardens has sold...
I was surprised to hear this. I live in Central San Diego, so I didn't get up there often, but I've always loved B. Creek. Do you know why they decided to sell? Do you know if the new owners will be making any changes? Sue T.
Well, they've been doing it long enough and wanted to do something else...moving to the PNW. The new people intend to keep it as is, I've been told......good news.
That was a beautiful nursery, I stopped there once on a garden tour.
It's still beautiful. I'm hoping that it remains so. I go there as a 'sabbatical'. It's very calm and calming.
I went to visit once, about two years ago, and ended up showing up on a day they were closed. Donna let me in, anyway, and we ended up spending almost the whole day together. It was like my own private tour. I bought some things, but also took home plenty of cuttings she obliged me with...
They had a massive 'Donna Brigham' passiflora consuming one of their greenhouses, and it was the prettiest passie I've seen to date. Had to get one for myself! They also had a gorgeous distictis(purple), that was eating one of their other greenhouses,lol...one of my favorite plants she introduced me to that day was holmskioldia tettensis, and it is still one of my very favorite plants.
Even back then she mentioned the nursery business was a tough one, and that they didn't know how much longer they could keep it up... The PNW is a great place to grow things! It will be such a shock to go from no rain and no winter, to a LOT of rain, and a real winter...
I know they will be missed. It was an enchanted place. I just loved her little area with the permanent tea set, set out and the wall that led to nowhere...and that gigantic tree with the surround underneath...
This is DB passie
Yes, Donna is special and will be missed by many. I hope that the new owners fare well....having to cut water usage by 30% is tough. Agriculture users were getting lower rates, but with the agreement that when things got tight, they would be the first to have to cut by 30%. A lot of growers are feeling the pinch now. That's the gist of it as far as I know...there may be more specifics to it. Perhaps the new owners would not have to abide by that.
