My new project - had to share!!!

Victor do you have any pics of clem growing/blooming in your shrubs. I have two (rogue cardinal and duchess of edinbury) now in a huge wigeala that have not done well - yet. I think I need to water more often or the root system of the wigeala is drinking to much. Really had to be careful trimming the bush.

And I strongly second debbie at silver star.

I will check, Bill. It' still a relative new thing for me. I started doing it in a bog way two years ago so the survivors should 'leap' this year. You pointed out the biggest challenge of this - having sufficient water. That's why I use crystals now. The canopy of the tree or shrub blocks the rain and, of course, the roots are competing. Try to do it with shrubs that are within reach of the hose or irrigation. I have noticed a few so far that have grown so much that they are much taller than the shrub they are growing up/through!!

It's great when it works, though. You can try to have the two bloom together or you can give the shrub a virtual second bloom - which will last longer in most cases than the shrub's own first one.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks - my problem is water neglect. the bush is so healthy i forget about the clem's. Debbie is the one that started me trying this bush project. the hose is outlet is 6 to 7 ft away so access is not an issue.

and I cut down a large birch and dug out it's HUGE root ball sunday. I had another clem planted in a bucket at it's base so now it needs a new home. Is there such thing as too much water for clem's? It is very wet down back near the wetlands (kinda figures) I may try to do something back there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, they can't be sitting in water. Well-drained soil is called for. I have been doing the shrub thing for a few years now. Not into a lot of trellis all over the place. When I first ordered from Debbie last year and got to know her, she was surprised at how I was doing it so much.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx victor - so much for down back. I do have a few trellis and lattice below the two level back deck where i have them. I'll have to take a walk about the yard for the likely spot. Maybe in the Shirazz---------not!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha ha! I have done them in JM's. I have white one (Huldine, I think) in Tamukeyama that will have many blooms this year. At that point, I will decide if I really like it or it looks silly. Or sacrilegious! Of course the contrast of texture with the dissectums is pretty cool.

Here's the only photo I could find, Bill.

Oh gosh Victor that looks so pretty!!! Which clematis is that? It is soooo dark!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. I have to double-check, but most likely it's Vesuvius. I just bought another one this year to train up my golden dawn (hey!) redwood.

Here's a close-up. The yellow anthers match the shrub nicely.

Victor - that is magnificent!

Thank you, Pirl.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I read somewhere about a person who had a clematis growing beside their lilac bush. The clematis accidentally wound its way through the lilac, and the person said it was stunning.

So, I put a Scartho Gem (pink) beside my lilac last fall. We'll see how it goes! (or grows)

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I planted some near my lilac last year too.

(Zone 4a)

Primrose I got a Scartho Gem this season - she looks so pretty on the photo!!! Please post photo's of yours when she blooms with the lilac bush.

Victor that combination with that clematis is really stunning and a real eye catcher for sure!!! Love it!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor - very nice. What kind of bush was that?

You'll have to post the clem in the jm - would be hard to do - although i do have a couple viridis and I could test this clem on it - it's a purple one that I's have to dig out the tag to id. kiri te kanawa which grows 6 - 8', maybe to big

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Dawn - great job on the pergola! Please post a pic when your vines get going. It's really going to be a great place to relax!

Victor - I LOVE that gorgeous photo of the yellow and deep purple....that's so pretty! Thanks for the tip on the water. I think I'll put some crystals down around my so so clems. They're off to a good start this spring.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bill, that is a barberry. Thanks, dawn and Louise. I planted a clem under my lilac last year. Should do something this year.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor-I love the color of that clematis, it would match my house perfectly.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I had been trying to find a hedge for growing clematice next to. There isn't a spot or a trellis.Thought I had one against the deck railings but realized in a few years there wouldn't be a view of the shade garden.
DD won't let me even plant vineing nastuerteums on the juniper in her sun garden. We have a lilac that is dead in the middle.
Think I'll put one there.
Thanks for the tip. Victor.

They work on many different shrubs, Jo Anne. The ideal one is not too tight nor too open in structure. If they are, you have to keep re-directing the growth, which is not really a big deal.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I just planted 9 lilies. Three in the sunny part of the shade garden. Too many roots and soil is krappy. Had to amend the clay layer with fine mulch and the sawdust that came with the bulbs.
Planted the other six where I had compost rototilled into the ground, easy digging but am not sure holes were deep enough. We'll see.
I see what you mean by not too dense a bush. I will probably wait until next year due to low level of the piggy bank.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor - I'll have to look for a yellow barberry did not realise they existed. I have several rose glow and some drawf red's.

thx

Bill - I think mine is 'Aurea'.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks saved me a google search.

Dawn, my two Betty and one other clem (forgot) are on their way. I am attempting to pair Betty with these berries.

Oh la la those would look great together!!! Nice shades of blue and lavender colours! Perfect!!! So you have 2 on the way eh? Good for you!! I am going to check out that nursery tomorrow and see if any Betty Corning came in..... I am excited!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, one for each of two Blue Muffins.

Funny. A few year's back, I took a few pics of my kids whenever they were wearing a color that matched one of my flowers in bloom! How over the edge is that?!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

cute Victor

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Maybe it's "Color Harmonies", Victor.

(Zone 4a)

I am having no luck finding Betty Corning so in her place I was thinking of the Hagley Hybrid - she is pretty too and sort of similar is colour??? Do you think she would look good mixed with my Etoile Violette?

I was also thinking of getting John Huxtable for the other post on the other side? What do you think?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hagley is nice. I had it but lost it to dryness. It can bleach out in full sun though. It likes some afternoon shade. JH is a nice white one.
