My new project - had to share!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Which is when, mid-Sep??

(Zone 4a)

Very funny Victor - we get long winters here but no we usually don't see snowflakes until Nov - usually LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So after you moved it, are those concrete 'feet' right next to the soil?

(Zone 4a)

Very close to it......

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

. . . and they all lived (under their pergola) happily ever after!

(Zone 4a)

Why do you ask Victor? Am I doing something wrong? The concrete feet are not right up to the soil - certainly back several inches....why? Yikes!!!! You make me nervous sometimes....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No no! Don't worry. Just thinking about 'guiding' them to the iron corners.

(Zone 4a)

Here is a photo - I planted my clematis this morning....

Ok whew I was worried I did something wrong......

Looks good! Nice that you have nice tall foliage already so it can reach. Are you planting two?

(Zone 4a)

Probably - you know me. Don't you think I could use another clematis on the other post at the other end??? LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Proper balance is always nice...

(Zone 4a)

I figured you would agree with me! LOL Any other suggestions for me? I need a tall grower......what colour would look nice with the purple?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So many possibilities. How tall is tall? Any of the pink tones will look great with purple. Or white if you prefer. There are many nice two-tone pinks.

(Zone 4a)

Looking for something in group 3 - you already know I LOVE pink and purple, white is great too!!!! Hmmm something that would grow up to 4 metres or something like that - at least that is what it says about the Etoile Violette.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Do they have an orange one? Orange and deep purple are AWESOME together.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Many pinks. 4 meters is pretty tall. Betty Corning, another viticella, is nice. Supposed to get about 3 meters. It's one of my favorites.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's more of a pale lilac, though, not a bright pink. But it should still look good against the dark purple.

(Zone 4a)

Betty Corning would do just fine!!! I love her colour too!!!! I think I have seen some of those around here as well......does she grow quickly?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, she does. Here's mine on PF.

(Zone 4a)

Well now you have me thinking Victor - maybe I should plant that one right beside the other on the same post for the contrasting colours? Would that be too much for one post? What do you think?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You can probably do it, but you'll just have to keep tucking them back together. They will tend to spread out.

(Zone 4a)

Ok but what is YOUR OPINION - should I or shouldn't I? What would Victor do?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's your project! I think it's worth doing though. They will look better if they are actually mixed together.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I agree with mixing.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Go ahead and mix

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Who did all the nice cutting on the wood?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Great job. Love the price of the wood. I know you will love that shade during those hot hot days you get on occasion up your way. My mom who is from Oklahoma almost melted 2 summers ago up at her cottage near Dwight. Her friends at home thought she was kidding about the heat in Canada.

I would defer to Victor, but the roots of your clematis may want some shade, but not mulch touching the stems from some kind help I was given on DG. My solution is that when they where young, I put an up side down plastic flower pot with the bottom cut out over mine that is partially buried to protect the roots from direct sun. It gave them some shade and protected them from me disturbing them come spring during my clean up. Something about "feet in the shade and heads in the sun". Also, I heard this expression, "first year they sleep, second, they creep and third, they leap". I have some one year old from a coop that were tiny that I was sure were goners, but much to my surprise they have emerged from their little upside down pot homes and they are now growing rather well and I have third year ones that have taken off big time. My little pot heads. Can't wait for the show as they are covered with blooms.

I hope you post more pictures of your great project. Patti

(Zone 4a)

Victor - my dad cut all the wood for us....

Thanks so much Patti. Yes we do tend to get very hot humid weather at times.....I guess it would surprise some since we are up North. When we go through a heat wave it is brutal!!! Thank goodness for central air - I don't even go outside on days like that.

Heat? My DH when it gets hot will take me out on some back roads and when we get to one spot it is like 20 degrees cooler. Its a road in a rivene with tons of rocks and trees. Its weird as when you drive into it you can automatically feel it.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That's what is nice about the gorges, you can feel the coolness immediately.

(Zone 4a)

Well I am heading to my favourite plant store in a few minutes. Last time I was there they had a few Betty Corning Clematis. Hopefully they still have one for me!!!!! Now I am so excited to plant it with the other......I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up in case they don't have any left.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good luck, Dawn!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

bbrookrd-that's a great idea with the upside down pot.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Jen, with clems it's all about moisture. They do require a good supply. That's the reason for the 'shady feet' adage. Mulch works fine to help with that. But they would grow fine in bare dirt in full sun if you had the time and patience to water it a couple of times a day. The only clems I have lost has been due to dryness. I have one or two growing in an area (near my annuals) that I do not even mulch. But I am always there watering the annuals so they get watered at the same time. I have used crystals (and mulch or ground cover) for the areas I don't water regularly.

(Zone 4a)

Very good ideas!!!

Patti I can't wait to see your clematises in full bloom!!!! Take pics!!!

No Betty Corning today - the guy did say they are getting a huge shipment on clems this Wed so I will be making another trip - I won't give up!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I am getting two more Betty to grow up my Viburnum 'Blue Muffin' to complement the dark blue berries.

(Zone 4a)

I am jealous!!! Teehee!!!

So where is that list of all the new clems you are getting?? I would love to know what you are getting!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Actually, I got and planted most of them last month. Betty and one other had to wait. I'll get the list one of these days...I have planted well over 50 varieties. A number have bitten the dust because they were not near irrigation so I'm not sire how many I have now. The vast majority of mine are grown through shrubs. My Ramona, which I let scramble, has a gazillion buds so the show will be very good soon.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor, where do you buy your clems?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mostly from Silver Star Vinery now. Debbie there is top-notch. A great person and extremely helpful. Even if you know zip about clems, she will guide you. She is expensive (and shipping went up this year, as with many places), but you will not believe the root mass you get. If you decide to try her, please tell her you're a friend of mine. (She'll charge more - hee hee!)
