Giant lily bulb

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 7b)

Here is a photo of a lilly I was moving. It grow over 7 feet tall last year. It was a struggle to hold it in one hand to take the picture.

Quite impressive!

What a giant! Did you divide it? I moved and divided a big American Dream one this Spring. Gave one piece with 2 stems away and divided the rest to make a big clump of them. I like the look of a lot of stems all blooming at once.

How do you divide a lily bulb?

When I replanted it it has put out two stalks. I would also like to know how to divide a lilly bulb.

I have a bunch that have multiplied in one bed that I will dig up and move around after they have bloomed. One plant has 18 flower buds on it...I can't wait to see it bloom.

Gosh, now that you asked I'm not even sure if what I did was right. Here is what American Dream looked liked when I dug it up. I had only started with one bulb to begin with 3 or 4 years ago. The one piece with 2 stems broke off as I was digging it up. Moby got that piece. Then the larger piece in the photo I just pulled apart so that one piece had 2 stems and 2 had one stem each. This is how I have always divided lily bulbs and it seems to work, but I sure won't swear it's the right way.

Well, you got me worried, so I googled and found a good link on dividing lilies:

Guess I've been doing it about right all these years except that Fall is better than Spring. I have a huge King Kong I may dig up this fall. It was bigger than a large cabbage when I planted it 2 years ago and has multiple stems this year. From Buggy crazy of course.
