Spring always brings amazing birds, more than summer. Here is an Indigo Bunting I saw on my feeder today. I took ton's of photos. I have had so many great Warblers too. I always have cardinals, doves of all kinds, etc, but I have not seen this one in my yard before. He was eating with the others.
I have to share my blue friend
ooo Sally.I am so bird crazy I can't even begin to tell you!! I can't wait til the indigo buntings get back here.Nothing prettier than the males color.Your camera captures it so beautifully! Your picture is amazing! Do they nest down in Texas or do you suppose hes just passing through? Hope he stays for you but just in case tell him if he leaves he is to head due north to my backyard : )
Nancy
Male indigo bunting on the left and female goldfich on the right Susan..Very pretty!!
Oh, the Indigo Bunting is a a gorgeous bird! I have only seen one in our yard once, a few years ago, and it was so exciting to get to see one of these beauties!
I too am a bird fanatic ... love them! At one time I had about 14 feeders in the yard! Down to 6 now and a couple of birdbaths.
The list of birds that come to our backyard on a regular basis are: Cardinal's, Blue Jays, Mockingbirds, Mourning Doves, Brown Thrashers, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wrens, House Wrens, 3 different kinds of Woodpeckers, Whippoorwill, a few different Hawks, and Chimney Swifts, which do love chimneys - we used to have them nest in our chimney but had a chimney sweep clean and cap it because of the mess they made! We've seen the Eastern Bluebird once or twice over the years but not a regular.
These birds don't come to our feeders but we sometimes see Swallowtail Kites ... beautiful birds! And, Osprey's nest in the area. There are always flocks of Sea Gulls flying over in the evening (they spend hours at the city dump feeding and then around 5:30 head back over to the beach!) A year or so ago I saw a Great White Egret in my neighbors back yard ... we see them at the beach all the time but usually they aren't backyard feeders unless you have a pond which this neighbor doesn't! Don't have a clue what it was eating! Of course when we are out on our boat or at the beach we see many Pelican's and different shore birds like the Egret's and Heron's. There are also Bald Eagles in the area but I haven't seen one in awhile.
I am not good with a camera and want to know how y'all get such great shots of the birds at your feeders! I would love to be able to take pic's of my backyard birds!
I was just SOOO happy with that photo because I took it from my kitchen through my picture window. We have one very large picture window, all glass and two smaller one on either side. The BEST thing is that we just had them replaced so they are nice and new. One of my feeders is out there. In my pic. he was just to the left of the feeder. I fed them twice today. My spoiled birdies.
Here is another picture.
Susan, your photo is so nice!
I LOVE birds (I adore my doggie too.) I have a Parrotlet, I love to watch birds and play with my tiny parrot! She flies around the house free most of the time.
Nancy, they come through for the spring I think. Some may stay in summer. I will send him to you if he must leave, ha.
I love to get pictures because I can remember them when they leave!
I love to visit my sister and family down in Fort Lauderdale .... wild parrots everywhere! They nest in palm trees! Before my Mom passed I would go stay with her in her mobile home and after a rain there was a huge puddle in the middle of the road and there would be at least 50 parrots in the puddle, splashing around! I can't believe I never took a picture! I could just sit and watch them for hours. My sister and her husband talk about how loud they are with the squawking. Some folks don't like them because they make a big mess on sidewalks, cars etc.
There are also areas in Florida where wild Peacocks live and roam! And, people do not like them because they make such a mess. And, I guess during breeding season the males are quite aggressive towards people. There's one city not far from us where there's a controversy because of many peacocks ... some of the neighbors love them and others want animal control to take them away!
Of course people who live along the beaches here in Florida don't like Pelican's either because they will roost on roof's and make a huge mess! I just say ... the wildlife was here long before we were. It is us who are encroaching on their territory. I remember one year hearing about folks finding alligators in their swimming pools! Thank goodness our backyard is fenced and the pool is screened! I don't know what I would do if I found a gator in the pool ... it's bad enough finding snakes in the patio! We have black bears in Florida too and every so often on the news they will show a bear in a tree in someone's yard!
We get a ton of birds here and I can't type long as I have to run to work... We get this woodpecker and I can't spell his name at this time but he is BIG... beautiful....
Later and all pictures are GREAT.
Susan
Susan: I bet it's the Pileated Woodpecker: http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/pileated-woodpecker.html It's one of the largest ... we get them down here too! I love their "call" ... very distinct, and loud!
Sally..many thanks on sending him my way if the time comes..lol..Birdwatching ranks right up there with plants to me..I really love them!Oh your tiny parrot sounds like a little doll! Birds are such fun! I have a tiel I handraised from 3 weeks old.. loves to play and talks pretty good named emmet lol..he has free roam in the house.. I love him to death..wherever I am he is..when its bedtime he goes right in his cage..he's my baby! Lin..wow you do have the birds down your way..It must be so neat to see all them in person..I can imagine those wild parrots could make a racket..I did see a flamingo at the zoo once..lol..not the same thing..During the spring when its planting time we actually get gulls and pelican looking birds all over the fields..I have no idea what they are really called..need to do some research..I remember my dad telling me as we were growing up on the farm that when they passed thru was the farmers sign to plow the fields..as soon as the fields are planted they leave..pretty amazing birds.Yep I bet lins right Susan sounds like a pileated to me too.we don't have them here..wish we did..they are really neat looking!
That is a beautiful bird.
Those Indigo Buntings are absolutely gorgeous!
There's a woodpecker that is evidently more hardheaded than most... It pecks on the TV antenna every morning! I can hear it through the fireplace chimney. LOL Took me over a week to figure out what it was! LOL I finally managed to get a couple pictures. ^_^
The hummingbirds have returned as well! I call the males, Henry. LOL I talk to them while I'm outside and the family thinks I'm nuts, but whatever... LOL Last year, I was able to hold the feeder while one drank. ^_^ Hope I can do that again this year and get better pictures. (Ignore my dirty fingernails...I was gardening! ^_^)
Amy that woodpecker is so cute.we have them here..think they are called red bellied woodpeckers..silly name because their bellys's aren't red and they have little orange not red hats on their heads! I can imagine him rapping on your tv antennae is quite a sound..LOL..too cute : )
Amy I remember that pic! I ove how you got them to drink right from the feeder when you are holding it..I have them almost..almost...hope these year I can teach mine that trick..LOL..Henry's how cute..they look like Henry's : )
We get the red bellied woodpecker here in Florida too ... I guess they have a pretty wide range of habitat. Look at the photo in here of the female though ... I've never seen one! Always the males that are visible in my yard, wonder why I've never seen a female?

Oh, that is soo neat being able to hold a feeder while a hummer is feeding! Really cool! I would love to be able to do that!
Sally: It looks like we've taken over your thread! I just have to post this photo of a bird belonging to my sisters next door neighbor! One of the most colorful birds I've ever seen! This is from last Thanksgiving when we were down in Fort Lauderdale visiting my sister and family. I had him on my finger and someone snapped a picture. He was the sweetest thing. He is a baby Caique Parrot, pronounced "kike"and I found this information about them: http://www.caique-parrot-pet-birds.com/
Meet "Mango"
Oh, "Chipper" is adorable, such a pretty girl! What a cute picture with the I'm bored caption!
I love birds. They can be so pretty with all the diff. colored feathers.
Sally..Chipper is soooo cute! Looks like a real sweetie..love the caption..now how she she ever be bored with all those wonderful toys? lol Lin that neighbors bird is a biggun' so pretty! Makshi you have birds in the house don't you? I seem to remember that from some thread,..anyway I hope you are who I am thinking of....
LOL Cedar ... and "Mango" is small for a parrot! He needed a beak clipping badly.
My husband had an Indian Ring Neck Parrot years ago. That bird hated me! He would bite the %%@@** out of me every chance he got! And, I am an animal lover ... I would never hurt an animal for the world. But, that bird was a one person bird and sure didn't want anything to do with me! He was soooo loud! Would drive me crazy with his squawking! We ended up giving him away and the lady who took him bred him with her female and had a few clutches of little baby indian ring necks.
I don't have a picture of "Sandy" but this looks identical to him: http://www.indianringneck.com/
My husband has always wanted a Moluccan Cockatoo ... now that's a BIG bird! But, then again not as big as a Maccaw which my sister's next door neighbor used to have!
That is so cute! It looks like Chipper is reading the ingredients on that box!
Hi from another bird lover.Great pictures.
Sally that a beautiful blue bunting! I get them here in Al. for a week or so then they move on.I wish they would stick around awhile. The eastern bluebirds are all around my area.

Jannich they look so sweet..ours are just now starting to nest. Sally chipper looks like shes one spoiled little birdie..what a cutie: )
Oh, How neat Jan! Baby cardinals! We gave lots and lots of cardinals year round but I've never seen a nest with babies! That is so cool! Aren't they just the funniest little things when they are bald like that before they grow all their feathers?
Oh my goodness! It looks like a Prairie Chicken or something! What is it?

Nancy, I didn't know you used to live on a farm! How cool! I always thought it would be so neat to live on a farm. Lots of hard work but rewarding too. Of course nowadays with the economy farms are suffering a lot.
